  1. The John Lewis Album with Putte Wickman and Red Mitchell (Finesse)
  2. Butterfly McQueen Little Queenie Sweet Little Sixteen
  3. Just finished watching Broadchurch Series One. Hadn't seen it before - intense stuff.
  4. The Magnificent Montague https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnificent_Montague The Splendid Splinter Guy Grand
  5. Thelonious in Action It's good a pretty good record, but Johnny Griffin's blowing doesn't have a lot to do with Monk much of the time - at least not to these ears.
  6. Sonny Stitt-Bud Powell-J.J. Johnson (Prestige) Good to hear Stitt playing only tenor on this one.
  7. I'll just say that vocals were a major part of Elmore's, T-Bone's, and Gatemouth's music. And I'll also say that there have been a fair number of white players who could imitate/copy their guitar playing to varying degrees, but couldn't touch their vocals.
  8. Leonard Chess Bobby Knight Sean Rooks
  9. From the current issue of Stereophile: "Blues is a vocal music. Most whites think it's a guitar music with incidental vocal accompaniment." Amen.
  10. The Farr Brothers Holly Near Glenn Close
  11. Tony Bennett Bennett Cerf Surfer Dude
  12. Wallander (Swedish version) - Season 2 - disc 3
  13. Weeb Ewbank Joe Namath Don Maynard
  14. Powerful wailing music. Do you have a more precise date for this? I thought that by 1966, McCoy (and probably Elvin) had left the band.
  15. Bird at the Roost Volume One (Savoy Jazz) Great to hear Bird stretching out a bit - most of the performances are 4+ minutes - as opposed to the studio recordings, and taking a few chances that he might not have taken in the studio. Plus there's Miles beginning to become Miles.
  16. No surprise then that so many end up broke.
  17. The Waterstons William Bell John Donne
  18. Buck Hill Bootsy Collins Wellington Mara
  19. Earlier thread on Earl Hines solo recordings: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/25524-earl-hines-solo-recommendations/
  20. Dwight Gooden The Paragons Laurel and Hardy
  21. I lived outside Minneapolis when I was very young and knew the names of the players on the Lakers great teams. Also vaguely knew of John Kundla by name. I had no idea that he was still alive. Great that he still follows and loves the game at almost 100 years of age.
