  1. Wes: Born To Be Blue
  2. I'd like this a lot more if Freddie Hubbard had sat it out (except for one tune). Interesting to hear Ron Carter back when he was interested in playing music, rather than just phoning it in and collecting paychecks. Sam Rivers does some spectacular playing.
  3. Bukka White: Parchman Farm (Columbia)
  4. I don't have that one, but Budd Johnson has to be near the top of the list of known "names" who tend to be overlooked. n.p.
  5. Great story, Jeff. Those few sentences added something to the music for me.
  6. My favorite later Big Joe Williams recording. It shows a subtlety that I haven't heard in his other later recordings.
  7. If a label such as Acrobat is releasing material that they pay nothing to record and (probably) pay nothing to the artists or their estates, to me there's no reason (other than greediness) why they are issuing CDRs rather than real CDs.
  8. Too bad (imo, anyway) that they included Joe Newman and Frank Wess on the original LPs. For me, Jug and the rhythm section would have done it. Plus, after Jug's beautiful solo on "Angel Eyes", there was no need for a flute solo and an organ solo. Again, imo.
  9. Happy Birthday!
  10. That's my take on that label.
