  1. But leaving aside the obvious difference that most of the NBA games in 1962 were never even filmed, let alone given the media exposure or public attention of the 2012 NBA, even Wilt wasn't expected by anyone to do the kinds of stuff that's expected of Lebron. The onus to win a team game with individual effort is on Lebron in a way it never was on Wilt. That's all I'm saying. When people talk about why the Warriors couldn't beat the Celtics, nobody points their finger and says "Wilt couldn't get it done." The reverse is true for LeBron - rather than ask why no Heat role player could score consistently enough in the 2011 Finals to give LeBron some time to rest, instead the narrative is all about LeBron shrinking in the fourth quarter. Back then - and I was around - people did say, "Wilt couldn't get it done." There was always the comparison with Wilt and Bill Russell. Wilt got the numbers, but Russell got the championships. Similar to discussions today.
  2. I have no real argument with what you've said, I was just giving my answer to your question: "Who in any sport ever has been held to this kind of standard?!" Wilt tried to do it all and his team didn't win the title in 61-62. James is trying to do it all and we shall see what happens with his team.

  4. Yeah - But the man still averaged 48.5 minutes per game, 50.4 ppg, and 25.7 rpg. No one did it before him. No one's done it since. You can say what you want. It still doesn't take anything away from what the man did that year. 48.5 minutes per game. Who else will ever match that?
  5. Greatest non-Reid Miles BN cover ever. That and this: I remain steadfast in my unqualified admiration of the LT artwork. Every picture tells a story. Interesting, sometimes eye catching covers on some of that series. Pressings were not up to that standard.
  6. Check out Wilt Chamberlain's stats for the 1961-62 season. Not playoffs - season. http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/chambwi01.html 48.5 min./game; 50.4 ppg.; 25.7 reb./game - That's over 80 games, not just for the playoffs.

  9. Louis Armstrong's humanity came through in everything he did.
  10. What is with the hat? Did he go bald? That's the usual reason guys wear hats these days.
  11. Yes, I remember "Honest Tom" Pomposello. I believe Oblivion records did an album of his. He died fairly young. Did you also listen to Cowboy Joe's Radio Ranch (Paul Aaron)? Is that the same Ashley Kahn who writes the books about famous jazz albums? Yes - same Kahn.

  13. Haven't listened to that one in years. Time to pull it off the shelf and put it on the box. Thanks for the reminder.
  14. I'm not a Mets fan, but it was good to see them come back and win big after being swept by the Yanks. The Mets are having a better season than almost anyone expected. Good for them.
  15. Looks like Bob Koester, Nils Winther, and yourself are the only ones in the picture who are still in the record business. I guess that Bob Porter is still active, but he's not running a label.
  16. If OKC wins, Derek Fisher will have 6 rings - one more than Kobe. That's a long ways from Bill Russell's 11 and Sam Jones' 10. A bit of trivia: Robert Horry has one more ring (7) than MJ.
  17. I'd say a seperate post with the labels would suffice, but that's just me.... That would be fine. I know most, but there are a couple I don't know.
  18. Had never seen a photo of a number of those people. Now I can put faces with the names.
  19. I remember watching him. He was a great amateur/Olympic boxer.
  20. It's a long season. Players know it, but we fans sometimes have a tendency to forget.
  21. For you he's on at a reasonable hour. Sid's got that classic New York Jew delivery. Some of those WKCR guys have been on air for about 40 years, like Schaap and Sharif Abdul Salaam (whom I first knew of as Ed Michael). When I started listening to WKCR DJs included Fred Seibert, who was with MTV from the beginning, and Rich Scheinin, who started Oblivion Records and now writes for San Jose Mercury News. I think I first became aware of WKCR in 1970 during the Coltrane marathon, and I did lots of all-nighters in August of 1973 listening to the Bird marathon, just before starting college. Not to forget Tom Pomposello, who did a good blues show. And then there was Ashley Kahn, who did a less good blues show. I'd like to forget him.
