  6. Thanks, Chuck. Just checked a discography and I'm missing eight early solo tracks recorded for labels other than Gennett. Probably worth it to pick up the Retrieval CD for those.
  7. Jelly Roll Morton: The Gennett Piano Solos 1923-24 (Swaggie) Does anyone here have an opinion on how the Retrieval CD compares to the Swaggie LP? John R.T. Davies remastered the Swaggie and I believe he did the Retrieval. Wondering how he used filtering on the CD. I'd stick with the LP but the CD has 6 extra tracks. Did a search here but couldn't find anything close to definitive.

  9. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote so many wonderful songs. They were two pillars of American songwriting. Thank you, Mr. Leiber. You'll be missed.

  14. I've always thought that hockey fights were idiocy - the only non boxing sport where fighting is allowed. If you put any hockey fighter in the ring with a good professional boxer, they'd be knocked out within a round. Yeah, well let's see Mike Tyson try to fight on the ice wearing skates and see how long he lasts... Boxing is boxing and hockey should be hockey, not hockey/"boxing".
  15. Yes, the only thing worse than paying a pitcher $16 million a year to warm the bench is paying him $16 million a year to put games out of reach for you before the second inning's over. Why does it matter, and why do you care??? The Steinbrenners do not know the meaning of the word "budget". They will always continue to pay as much as it takes to win. Or, in Burnett's case, pay as much as it takes to lose.
  16. And Pete Abraham is salivating at the prospect of a John Lackey-A.J. Burnett $82.5-million-bust matchup in Game 4 of an ALCS. Me, I wouldn't bet at this point on A.J. being in the playoff rotation at all, not with the way Hughes and Nova have been pitching. But if it happens, my money's on Lackey, whose 5.33 August ERA looks positively ace-like next to A.J.'s. If Burnett is in the starting rotation after tonight's outing, someone has lost their mind.

  20. Ornette: Love Call (BN/Liberty/UA)
  21. I never thought that the Elvin/Garrison rhythm section meshed all that well with Ornette. I listened to Love Call again today and had the same impression. I'd forgotten that Leonard Feather did the liner notes for Love Call. I never had the impression that he had much use for Ornette's music. Anything for a buck, I guess. Too bad that Rudy Van Gelder never got a shot at doing CD releases for New York Is Now! and Love Call. (I know that he didn't do the original recordings, but he didn't record the Golden Circle dates, and he did a very good job on those CDs.) The original LPs blow the Malcolm Addey remastered CDs out of the water, at least to my ears. But the CDs do have additional music.

  23. Finding out who it was scared me. He must have done some hard living over the years.
  24. More about Eddie Gaedel. A.L. president Will Harridge voided his contract after that game. I wonder if there would be a lawsuit charging discrimination if this happened today. Unfortunately for major league baseball, there's no Bill Veeck around today. Check out the end of the Wikipedia article for intesting info on Eddie Gaedel's grandnephew.
