  1. About 20 years ago I picked up a number of sealed Columbias from the early to mid 60s. The record store owner said they had belonged to someone who had worked for Columbia back then and had stored them in his home for all those years.
  2. This link works. Nothing to be embarassed about. Good (too short tho) interview & many of us here are interested.
  3. Nice publicity for Mr. Schnabel. If he were still around, I'm sure he'd appreciate it.

  13. My Turrentine box recently came with no number - not in the booklet, not on the receipt. I asked Mosaic for the #, and got this reply from Scott: "The booklets are pre-numbered and therefore we have no idea what each set is numbered. This is one of the downfalls of the economy as we are now just 3 people in offices, while a fulfillment house a few miles away is where the warehouse is. Sorry for the inconvenience." Music's still great, though. Just write in your own number. 0001 might be nice.
  14. Have Marchel Ivery 3 also - the only Ivery in my collection. Previous (very short) Marchel Ivery thread: Jim Sangrey has a fair number of posts about Marchel Ivery, if you want to do a search. edit: I plan on picking up the recording he did with Joey DeFrancesco. Hope there are recommendations & recollections from others.

  17. From what I saw (and it was from a distance - through newspapers, books, and documentaries), the difference bewteen Feller and Williams was that Williams respected the best of the players who came after him and the players who played in the Negro Leagues and who were never allowed into the Major Leagues. Feller always seemed to view players who followed his time as a threat to his legacy and seemed to find some comments to put them down. (I don't know how he felt about the Negro League players.) Bob Feller didn't need to have that attitude. He was one of the greatest pitchers of all time.

  19. Thanks for posting this; it inspired me to pull out my copy of The Otis Ferguson Reader. I read all of his pieces on Bix Beiderbecke over the Atlantic Ocean last night, and thought they were insightful and beautifully written. One mistake, I think - Ferguson refers to Bix's solo on Paul Whiteman's "After You've Gone" in two of the essays. The only problem is, I don't think such a thing exists. I've got the IRD edition of the complete Bix recordings in my iPod, and there isn't any such track. I'm 4000 miles from my discographies, but I'm guessing that there's a recording of "After You've Gone" by Whiteman featuring Andy Secrest or some other Bix follower, and that it was attributed to Bix in those early days of jazz scholarship. Anyway, I'm really enjoying becoming reacquainted with Otis Ferguson. Getting that link is making me read and reread some of Otis Ferguson's pieces.

  21. I have to admit that I haven't kept up with Anthony Braxton over the years, except for an occasional recording. Part of that is that I've felt overwhelmed by the flow of releases. I'll buy this one because I trust Chuck's taste in music and want to support what he does.
  22. If I were a Phillies fan, I wouldn't be completely confident. You're talking two starters who will be 34 next season (Halladay and Lee), a .500 pitcher over the past two years (Hamels), and a 33 year old (next season) pitcher who's had back problems (Oswalt). On paper, things may look great, but a lot can happen over the course of a season. But, hey, I'd be pleased if the Yanks had that staff. I'm hoping that Andy Pettitte will return - even though he'll be 39 next season - just because the Yanks don't have anyone better. Have a feeling that if he does return, he may break down again. If he does return, he should get a decent contract. The Yankees had him over a barrel last year, and he signed a contract for less than he was worth. This year, he holds the cards and the Yankees will have to pay to get him back. edited for correction: Cliff Lee will be 33 next season.
