OK - I've been reading this thread for the past few days and I don't want to throw things off track since I pretty much know what jazz 1 is looking for.
But - I keep reading the names of the various singers who've been mentioned and I keep thinking - has there ever been a more creative singer than Billie Holiday? None that I've heard.
Can't choose just one - listened to too much good music this week:
Bill Dixon: "Places and Things" from Considerations 1 (Fore)
Joseph Jarman: "Little Fox Run" - previously unissued, longer version & "Non-Cognitive Aspects of the City" from Song For (Delmark)
Hi Henry Brown (w. Charley Jordan): "Preacher Blues" from Times Ain't Like They Used To Be Vol. 4 (Yazoo)
Lists are fun to read sometimes, but they're just lists. If MG, Chuck Nessa, Peter Friedman, and EKE BBB - to pick four random members here - all made up lists of 100 essential jazz records, I'm sure there would be major differences of opinion in what they compiled.
John Simmons recorded with many of the giants - Louis, Monk, Milt Jackson, James P., Benny Carter, Don Byas, Nat Cole, Hawk, Billie, and Pres - to name some of them.
If some of the other saxophonists mentioned had stayed with Monk for a longer time, they might have gotten inside of Monk's music. They didn't remain with Monk - for whatever reasons - and Charlie Rouse did, and Charlie Rouse did get inside Monk's music more than any other saxophonist.
If anyone's looking for Black Saint/Soul Note titles, Cadence distributes them and has most titles in stock.

For all of Phil Schaap's faults, he has done a lot of good things for musicians and the music. (And yeah, sometimes he's over-done things, and yeah, he does seem to have a overlarge ego.) But he's done many more positive things for the music than I have, so I'm not going to knock him.
Went to Borders and got a couple of RVGs with the 40% coupon:
Duke Jordan: Flight to Jordan
Johnny Griffin:A Blowin' Session
Had both on LP, but got them for the extra tracks. They were cheap enough and I'm an addict, so ...
