  1. Atlantic P-7532A - Quicksand: P. 1976
  2. Just listened to Roscoe Mitchell New Chamber Ensemble: Pilgrimage - once last evening and once this morning. My first exposure to Mr. Mitchell's chamber/more notated music - though in some ways I hear all of his music as parts of each other. A lot of very wonderful music on this recording - "Sound Pictures, No. 3", "Alternate Express", "To Styles Holloway and Bubba Barnes", ""Sound Pictures No. 4", and "Spirits Among Stones" - all . Interesting to listen to how "Alternate Express" played out with this group and with the Art Ensemble.
  3.  Best Birthday Wishes, Joe! Enjoy YOUR day!
  4. Hope you have a great birthday!
  5. Yeah - I guess if that's my biggest complaint, I have no problems here. edit: I'm reminded of the story about Nellie Monk straightening framed pictures on the wall. Finally Monk purposely put up a picture at an angle, and nailed it to the wall that way, so Nellie couldn't straighten it. There's a lesson there.
  6. Yes. That's what I meant.
  7. I know this is more than a little obsessive/anal retentive/ fussy/whatever, but whenever I run down the list of Forums, all of them are in alphabetical order except that Mosaic and other box sets is listed before Miscellaneous music. Can a moderator set this straight? I Know noticing this shows that I obviously spend more time here than I should, and I know that there will probably be a number of clever responses from folks who also spend more time here than they should.
  8. Interesting collection - we expect reports on your listening.
  9. Have his first Vanguard recording, Patrick Sky - enjoyable recording. A little to add to what's been said: He produced three Mississippi John Hurt albums on Vanguard; played on at least one Buffy Sainte-Marie Vanguard album. Had some involvement with Green Linnet Records in the 70's/80's. For a number of years, I think he's been playing and making Uilleann pipes. I've never heard the Adelphi album, but it's available - http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1159808 - and the clips sound pretty wild - something to offend anyone/everyone.
  10. I was joking when I posted that "rumor". The Knicks want no part of Larry - and vice versa.
  11. I'm always amazed that when a team plays badly - especially in the playoffs - that the coach gets the blame. Coaching may have something to do with it - making adjustments against a team seen every second or third night in a series - but the players are the ones who are on the court, and the ones who have to do it. If Wallace and McDyess play badly, they should bear the brunt of the responsibility, not the coach. Because Flip obviously has no control over these guys. If a player is playing badly you either pull him or you get him to play better somehow, some way. I see that Larry Brown is free again. According to rumors, Larry's going back to coach the Knicks.

  13. Good day today - UPS delivered: Von Freeman: Dedicated to You Walt Dickerson: Shades of love - Both on Steeplechase
  14. Thanks for the heads up, Allen. Have the Revenant, but not the Smithsonian Folkways, which is still in print.
  15. Mail person just delivered: Roscoe Mitchell New Chamber Ensemble: Pilgrimage (Lovely Music) Henry Fiol: La Ley de La Jungle (SAR)
  16. Family mentioned here - http://www.legacy.com/Obituaries.asp?Page=...ry&Id=14315
  17. "Big Legs, Big Stockings" - a Buster Brown record "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away" - Dan Hicks
  18. Some time ago, I heard that Jimmy Giuffre was suffering from Parkinsons and could no longer play, but I still wasn't prepared to read about his passing. Thanks and RIP, Mr. Giuffre.
  19. This was a recording that slipped by me. Even missed it when it was an AOW. Picked it up recently & am happy I finally got to hear it. Three musicians who truly listen to each other - & a good chance to hear George Lewis stretch out on trombone in a small group setting. Listened to it for the second time today, and was struck by a segment of "Shunk-Shank" where Lewis and Lindberg get into a riff, and Altschul, instead of playing a backbeat, as a lot of drummers might have done, plays some accents on cymbal and (bass?) drum and lets the music happen without forcing a cliche on it. it's unfortunate that there wasn't any initial response to this as an AOW. I wish that I had heard this music at an earlier time and could have responded then. Thanks to Steve Reynolds for his initial post. Hope that others will check out this recording.
  20. A Blue Note record is going out of print? I didn't think that was possible. According to this - http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...mp;#entry762939 - Cisco has ceased operations.
  21. HB, JG!
  22. Don't know about a photo with Silverstein being significant, but it's not unusual to see a photo of Bukowski with a glass or bottle in hand.
  23. If Paul Simon records his next album in the Congo, maybe Clem won't be able to call him the world's biggest prick anymore.
  24. I didn't realise Von had a "Chicago" sound. I always assumed he had a very individual, highly penetrating, sound and that there wasn't a bunch of other Chicago sax players with a similar approach. Looking for some hints, here; I have much to learn about Chicago stuff. MG I can hear some Von Freeman in some of Johnny Griffin's playing - or vice versa.
