Giving a quick perusal through this thread, I found negative comments about: Pete LaRoca, Jimmy Cobb, Art Blakey, Art Taylor, Zutty Singleton, Louis Hayes, Wilbur Campbell, Philly Joe Jones, Billy Hart, and Roy Haynes. You guys are a tough audience.

I just found it - of all places - on a market in a little village in the Provence (southern France) for €20. Amazing what one can do it you don't have to pay anyone. Isn't that what freedom of intellectual property - or whatever the current catch phrase is - I'm old enough to remember "Music belongs to the people!" - is all about?

I heard Honeyboy Edwards at a club about 15 years ago, and he was playing very well. Great to know that he's still with us and still playing his music.

Paul, This is a nice one. Also check out "Early Morning Blues" by Albert Ammons, for its soulful Guy Kelly trumpet choruses. Thanks for the rec. Don't have it - I'll have to look for it.

My dad passed away today...
paul secor replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Jim - my condolences on the loss of a father and a friend. -
Actually, no. I tend to focus on West Africa and a bit on southern Africa. Africa's so big and varied you know... MG I'm (almost) shocked.

Best wishes for recovery for Mr. Terry.

A good day (except for my wallet). The mail woman brought: Sounds of Harlem Vol. 1 (Hep) & Joseph Jarman: Song For (Delmark) UPS brought: Henry Threadgill Very Very Circus: Spirit of Nuff ... Nuff (Black Saint) & Dutch Masters (Soul Note) - one I thought I had in my collection, but recently found that I didn't - so now I do and with a 30% coupon at Borders: Ethiopiques 4 - 1969-1974 (Buda Musique)
-
Stopped by Borders and found a copy of Ethiopiques 4 (1969-1974) buried behind a bunch of other stuff. So thanks again, Paul.

Just wanted to make mention of Master Musicians of Tanzania. I have two LPs - Tanzania Yetu and Mateso - plus a CD - Mateso - which combines the second LP with some of the first LP. Hukwe Zawose seems to be the leader, since he's the only common denominator on the recordings. I have no idea whether the musicians are still active or, for that matter, whether the record label - Triple Earth - still exists. I do know that the music on the recordings is wonderful. I hope that it's available somewhere, or if not, that it will become available once again. MG probably knows something about all of this.

Montreal can top that one! JOE PISCOPO SALUTES FRANK SINATRA WITH LIVE JAZZ ORCHESTRA CONDUCTED BY JOE MUCCIOLI From 1980 to 1985, American comedian and singer Joe Piscopo cracked up Saturday Night Live viewers with his famed impersonations of Frank Sinatra-who apparently enjoyed the send-ups himself. Today, Piscopo pays full tribute to his idol, with the unmistakable voice, the gestures and mannerisms, and an excellent group turning out classics including "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Night and Day", "Come Fly With Me", "It's Witchcraft" and "That Old Black Magic". Welcome back to the glory days of the Rat Pack. Frank and funny! Montreal "wins".

Sorry to read this. I didn't have the privilege of knowing her - only had some contact through the mail in the late 80's & early 90's when I ordered copies of two of Milt Hinton's books for myself and a bassist friend. From that, I had the impression that Mr. and Mrs. Hinton were truly fine people.

Lillith from Cheers? Yep.

200 bucks for a copy of Les Stances a Sophie on Nessa. Who knows if they'll find a buyer. Got any extra copies laying around, Chuck?
-
If you think that's bad, try the Litchfield, Ct. Jazz Festival with Bebe Neuwirth headlining the first night's final concert.
-
Thanks, Paul. If I'm near my local Borders in the next few days I'll see if I can find something. Odds are against it though.

Get rid of that paper sleeve!
