I'm glad you started this thread - led to some interesting differences of opinion. Plus it got me to listen to Leeway again!

There's a good later Little Brother Montgomery recording that's been reissued by Wolf - La Salle Chicago Blues Recordings Vol. 1 - originally on the English 77 label back in the 60's, and first reissued by Southland - the issue I have. Half of the record is by Little Brother Montgomery and the other half is by Sunnyland Slim. Perhaps of passing interest - Little Brother played on Magic Sam's first Cobra session and on Buddy Guy's first Chess session. edit - Have to admit that I've never been a big Little Brother Montgomery fan. This dates back to 1965, when I went to hear him in a club in New York and he played and sang "Hello Dolly" and other pop tunes - big disappointment.

Billy Root was interviewed in Cadence sometime ago and stated that the session did not occur on the date stated in the liner notes. He didn't give a date, but said that it occurred well before Clifford Brown's passing.

In the 1960s, when I started listening to jazz, I passed over a lot of hard bop records because of their formulaic quality. Later on - late 70s to the present - I was able to get past the formulas and hear the musicians and the music. I missed out on some great music back then, but I'm lucky enough to be able to hear it now - and can hear it differently than I could have back then. I don't find Leeway a boring date at all. Three of the tunes are taken at similar medium tempos, there's no ballad, and only one uptempo tune. Perhaps that's what Big Al is tuning into. Some fine solos throughout, and good tunes - a good record, to my ears.

Didn't realize that the Emarcy box is o/p. Most of it can be found on individual Emarcy/Verve CDs for about ten bucks each. You can safely go for any of the Max/Clifford sets and end up with some very good listening. The Clifford Brown with Strings set is a different deal, but fine listening also. The Clifford and vocalists (Helen Merrill, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan) CDs are good, but vocalists aren't my thing. Others may have a different view on those. The BN stuff has all been RVG'd - also recommended - especially the Messengers at Birdland sides. Live at the Beehive is another very fine set - mediocre (at best) sound, but great fiery music that overcomes any deficiencies in the sound. Unfortunately, it's currently available only from the Spanish pirates, so you'll have to decide whether you want to go there.

Matthew- here's a discussion on the original Louis Hot Fives and Sevens Sony box and the JSP box. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...6&hl=sevens Is your set the original or the 2006 set? I don't know if they're the same except for packaging. I would tend to think that Sony wouldn't do a new remastering when it had already been done a few years earlier. Guess all of this doesn't help you much if you hate the sound on yours. edit - You may want to check w. brownie about the Fremeaux series.

Almost missed it, but Happy Birthday!!

Came home this afternoon and found these on my doorstep - earlier than expected: Roscoe Mitchell & the Note Factory: Song for My Sister The Ex-Hermanites Featuring Bill Harris Should be some good listening over the weekend.

Nothing today - but last Saturday I got together with a good friend at Sally's Place in Westport, Ct. and picked up Von Freeman's The Improvisor and Paul Desmond's Quintet/Quartet. Unfortunately, my wife took them to set aside and give to me on my birthday - she says she never knows what to get for me. So I'll have to wait a couple of months to hear them. Gives me something to look forward to, and it'll be nice to get some music on my birthday. For anyone passing through S.E. Ct., Sally's place is a great place to check out. And Sally White is a great person to talk with.

I've had the three collections of Crumb's cards - Heroes of the Blues, Early Jazz Greats, and Pioneers of Country Music -since Yazoo Records issued them in the 1980s.

One that's somewhat overlooked is Brubeck & Rushing. Brubeck is more relaxed than usual; there's some good Desmond - always the best part of Brubeck's records (IMO); and the wonderful Jimmy Rushing is on board. Brubeck isn't the center of attention on this one - to me, that's a good thing.
