  1. I'm against censorship (except, at times, self censorship) (apologies to a Board member who knows what I mean), but I wonder if it might have been a good thing if The Times hadn't printed this review, and perhaps waited for another Dizzy Reece performance (assuming that there will be one) when he might have things more together.

  8. The Blue Note Buds have already been RVG'd - individually, not as a box. As for the Roost sides - ? Welcome to the forum.
  9. Bottom line: 90% - 95%? 98%? - of the American public (I won't make a judgement about the rest of the world) doesn't give a damn about music (music - not background noise, something to add to one's hipness quotient, or any other nonsense), let alone sound quality.
  10. Congratulations! You have been blessed.
  11. Trip came out in the '70s. They had a deal with Mercury and reissued a lot of vinyls from the EmArcy/Mercury/Limelight catalogue. Minimum work on the covers, sonics and pressings. They later released material from VeeJay, Jubilee and other sources including radio broadcasts and then disappeared! Trip records were usually a bad trip, in my experience.
  12. Is that the Vogue one with a quartet date from 1950 and a sextet w/Rosolino from 1953, or the later one that was reissued as part of EMI's "Americans Swinging in Paris" series? The former I have and it's good, the later I still need to get... Or is that the "Americans Swinging in Paris"? Nope, that one's the March 16, 1956 date - has this last one from 1961 been on CD? Flurin - the one I was referring to was the last (1961) date. Haven't heard the others you listed, but they look interesting.
  13. Best wishes on your day, CT!
  14. Zoot Sims in Paris (UA) is a longtime favorite. Seconds (3rds, 4ths?) for some previously mentioned Zoots: Zoot Sims Quartets You 'n Me (w. Al Cohn) Al and Zoot Warm Tenor One more side with Al Cohn: Either Way The Brothers (OJC 008) has some good Zoot.
  15. Happy Birthday, young fella!
  16. Reginald Hill: Death's Jest Book I've been reading a few of the books from Hill's Dalziel/Pascoe series - entertaining stuff
  17. Hi brownie - I don't want to get into an argument over something that's not important, but the label on my copy of Ju-Ju is clearly red and black. At some point, Impulse changed from orange and black to red and black. I just checked the label on my copy of Mama Too Tight, the Impulse issue previous to Ju-Ju, and that one is orange and black. The label on my copy of The Way Ahead, the Shepp Impulse issued after Ju-Ju, is red and black. If your copy is orange and black, I believe you. P.S. -- I'm not color blind. edited for punctuation
  18. One of the best Shepp LPs! However, I've never seen an orange/black pressing. Mine is black/red, which appears to be the usual version. The label on my copy is also black/red. I bought it when it was issued. The cover on my copy also has a "stereo" sticker covering what I assume is a printed "monaural". I believe that Ju-Ju was issued in late 1967, at the end of most monaural record issues.
  19. Hope it's a great birthday, Marty!
  20. Don't want to go to a desert island, but if I had to, I'd bring: Duke Ellington Charlie Parker Billie Holiday John Coltrane Mississippi John Hurt Sometime after I got there, I'm sure I'd be asking myself (I'm assuming there wouldn't be anyone else to talk to) why didn't you bring any Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Monk, Jimmy Yancey, John Fahey, Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Docteur Nico, Swan Silvertones, Mingus, Louis Armstrong, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Orchestra Baobab, Everly Brothers, Doug Sahm, Jimmy Reed, Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Robert Johnson ... ? But you live with what you got, and the five listed above are the ones I'd go with.
  21. A couple days late, but Hope it was a good one!
