  1. Happy birthday, Michael. Thanks for all the insightful posts! P.S. -- And a special thanks for your dialogue w. Barry Harris in the Bud Verve box booklet.
  2. Thanks for posting this, (BB). From the clip, it looks like it might be a good one.
  3. the winchester recording "another opus" liner notes state that his young son accidentally shot lem. Don't think so, unless you have some later LP issue. Am I missing something here? Anybody? I have a Japanese reissue of Another Opus, and the liner notes make no mention of Lem Winchester's son. The only mention of his passing is, as you mentioned, Jim, in Bob Weinstock's addendum.
  4. "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"
  5. In general, the newly unearthed material they issued was superior to the newly recorded material they issued.
  6. Never thought about it before, but listening to the introduction of Ornette on Sound Grammar made me wonder if Ornette is a variation of Arnett. (Not that there are a lot of Arnetts around - at least not in my experience.)
  7. Lazaro - Thanks so much for posting that interview. I'm always happily amazed when I read interviews with or liner notes by Ornette at the way that he can use so few words and say things that are so profound. I feel blessed to be here on earth at the same time he's here.
  8. Great story! Says a lot about Mingus and about jazz - at least jazz the way it should be played. A Curson I've always enjoyed is Blue Piccolo (Why Not) with Steve McCall, Cecil McBee, and Jim McNeely - don't think it's been mentioned.
  9. Meredith D'Ambrosio
  10. Check out Joe Newman's Jive at Five (OJC). Frank Wess plays some very fine tenor, and the record itself is a very good one. Also, Frank Wess has a couple of good alto solos (on "Choose Now" and "Focus") on Philly Joe Jones/Dameronia: Look Stop and Listen (Uptown LP).
  11. Cold but sunny here. I'm sure it's a lot colder elsewhere, so I won't complain.
  12. Seems like common sense stuff (tho I don't know about the "certain medicines"), but people obviously need to hear/read it again and again before it sinks in.
  13. Guess you were rich when you enjoyed his stuff.
  14. I have a neighbor named Miles - don't think it's that unique.
  15. Dexter Gordon/Wardell Gray: The Master Swingers! - Sunset & Swing Time sides

3 books, actually - You Don't Look Like a Musician, if you know of a better life please tell ME, and Crazeology - The Autobiography of a Chicago Jazzman as Told to Robert Wolf

    Love that one, brownie!
  18. My feeling is that Whitney Balliett did something that no one else did. He was unique - whether you like his writing or not, you have to give him that. edited for spelling
  19. Red Mitchell - It's the cover for the Atlantic recording Hear Ye! edit - a few seconds too late
  20. Well said. Thanks and RIP, Mr. Balliett.
  21. There have probably been many others, but one that comes to mind right now is Outskirts of Town by The Prestige Blues-Swingers. I expected it to be a typical Prestige jam session with maybe a few good solos. It turned out to be a very good big band date with arrangements by Jerry Valentine and good soloing by Tiny Grimes, Art Farmer, and Jimmy Forrest, among others.
  22. Most people here don't seem all that upset that Concord's deleting a slew of (imo) good records. Why get excited/upset because Mosaic is releasing a few (imo) mediocre records?
  23. You're making me laugh, Mike! I think ss1 should have a grid with squares for us to pick the date you break down and buy a CD! It'll be interesting to see what happens. I'd be curious to know how long some think I will make it. Today is my last day and I'm really tempted to pick up some Jimmy Heath before my ban. Hmmmm..... I'll keep people posted here with my progress. Strange that you should mention Jimmy Heath. Just got Jimmy Heath: Really Big! in the mail, along with: Willis Jackson: Please Mr. Jackson - grabbing those OJCs before they end up in the Concord cemetery Stan Getz: The Steamer Gillespie/Getz/Hawkins/Gonsalves: Sittin' In
  24. A few OJCs - before they disappear: Paul Quinichette, Buck Clayton, Shad Collins, Jack Washington, et. al.: Basie Reunion Jaki Byard: Here's Jaki Joe Newman: Jive at Five
