  1. Jackie McLean: New and Old Gospel (BN) - I'm pretty much ignorant of the Blue Note technicalities. Just know that I bought it when it was first released.
  2. I just opened up my Art Ensemble box. There's an invoice inside dated 11/26/93. I remember ordering it and thinking that I'd better grab it quickly because it wouldn't be around for long. Shows how much I know about the record biz. But ... it appears it won't be around much longer. I wouldn't want to be the 2501st person who tried to order this. Edited to revise the limited edition number - I thought the edition was 7500 copies. It took this long to sell 2400 copies of this set? What the hell's wrong with this world!
  3. This thread brings up a story that a friend told me recently. He went to a jazz festival a few years ago and they had a stage for mainstream (hard bop based) jazz and a stage for "avant garde" jazz. The musicians on the mainstream stage were for the most part under 50, while the "avant garde" musicians were for the most part over 50.
  4. Sonny Rollins (Blue Note-Toshiba/EMI-Japan)
  5. Affinity released all of these on LP in the 1980's - I believe I have them all except for the Hines and Cozy Cole dates. I love these recordings. I probably won't buy them again (unless there are unreleased tracks included), but anyone here who hasn't heard them should grab them when they become available.
  6. I thought I got there ten years ago.
  7. Happy birthday from one Paul to another. Hope you have a great one!
  8. Thanks for all the kind words and thoughts. I had a good birthday - actually celebrated Saturday. My wonderful wife Joan threw a party for me at a local restaurant with about 30 friends and family attending. Ed Diehl (a guitarist who recorded with Jack McDuff, Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, and Hank Mobley) played, along with my friend Bill Morrison on bass. Ed lives in nearby Poughkeepsie and is still playing great - as well as anyone else out there today - at least to my ears. He and Bill had never played together before, but once they started playing, they locked right in. My wife said that when someone hits sixty they deserve a special day, and she made one for me. It was a birthday I won't forget. You guys have helped to make my real birthday (today) a great day too.

    Steve Lacy

I have a copy. Its rarity outshines its musical quality.
  10. Sonny Rollins at Music Inn - Teddy Edwards at Falcon's Lair (MGM/Japan)
  11. Happy Birthday!!!
  12. Augie Meyer: Texas Head Music (Polydor)
  13. Sidney Bechet's autobiography, Treat It Gentle
  14. I recently listened to the Dizzy Gillespie/Double Six of Paris recording and found myself wondering what became of the Double Six? I believe that some or all of them were also in the Swingle Singers, whose recordings were popular in the U.S. in the early to mid '60s. Did they split up and disappear? Or did they continue to perform without making any waves in the U.S.? Thanks in advance for any info.
  15. A Very Happy Birthday to you, Guy!
  16. I've kept Cookin' with the Mighty Burner in my collection - an Earland band doing jazz standards - "Killer Joe", "Seven Steps", "Sister Sadie", etc. - tho I could do to hear this band with a different front line than Eric Alexander and James Rotondi. It's still a nice changeup from a lot of Charles Earland's releases.
  17. I'm not an afficianado, but I have one Amalia Rodrigues CD - Fados e Guitarradas au Portugal - Accord 401132. I bought it on the recommendation of writer/record label owner John Storm Roberts, who does have a knowledge of her music. I've enjoyed it when I've played it. That's the most I can say. I don't have any experience with other recordings to make any comparisons.
  18. This is probably a bit off the wall - definitely not important - but I saw/heard Henry Grimes play live in the '60s, and I remember that he had a decal or painting on the body of his bass. I'd be curious to know what it was and why it was there.
  19. Happy 35th! Keep that vinyl spinning!
  20. The Hawk Flies High (Milestone 2-fer) - LP one - '40s sessions
  21. Just listened to Buck Clayton/Buddy Tate: Buck & Buddy, which I was turned onto by this thread. Thought I'd up the thread for any further recs or thoughts on OJCs.
  22. Al Lewis ran for governor of New York on the Green Party Ballot a couple of gubernatorial elections ago and I voted for him.
  23. Happy Birthday! Just what I needed to see - another Board member who's younger than I. Seriously, I hope that you're having a great day and perhaps enjoying some fine music.
  24. I have it - probably won't be back on Board til tomorrow evening. If no one else has it, I'll be glad to answer any questions about the liner notes then.
