Chuck, thanks very much. It was Baker, Snyder and Marshall I was really enjoying and wondering who!

I'm listening to "Connee" by Connee Boswell on DECCA with the Sy Oliver Orchestra. . . . Anyone have any personnel information for this lp? The band is great!
-
I'm with Z. Your speakers will determine which amp to get. . . if your speakers are reasonably efficient, and you don't have a large room to fill, I'd recommend looking at the tube amps taht Decware builds. . . amazing bang for the buck: Decware page

Daaaa aaammmmmhhh! Looks just like him!

Okay, I don't think they are actually performing together on this one. . . . Wouldn't that be something though?
-
I recommend the "Manic Mode". . . .

All those Glenn Miller last time. . .sort of makes me less surprised to see all these Bob James this time!
-
See, that's just it: I honestly have never felt other than the sum is less than the two separately. Ron Tutt on the solo sides. . . is a stiffer more structured drummer, and I enjoy his work as well. I can do without Hart. . . . Just a personal thing.

Duke Pearson Mosaic Select for sale
jazzbo replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Offering and Looking For...
MM, the music is very good, in my opinion. I'm one of the few people here that likes the "How Insensitive" lp included, and "The Phantom" is a highlight, and so is "It Could Only Happen with You." Duke here explores Brazilian bossa nova with Airto Moreira and Flora Purim on board and I think his explorations have found fertile musical lands. There is also "Merry Ole Soul" included, which is my favorite Xmas session, period. I must say however that if one already had Japanese remasterings of those titles in this set released in Japan, there would be no need to purchase this Select. The remastering is the downside. . . just plain ole McMaster, not his best work. -
I'm glad you got to meet her! She has always impressed me as a wonderful woman from what I have read about her. And I'm not surprised she remains a beauty! Miles . . . Miles . . . Miles. . . . He woulda/coulda/shoulda.

If you were shaking your head. . . well I wouldn't bother; the extra stuff pretty much is in line with the released stuff, so you'd be doing some real head-shaking. Me. . . I'm not a Mickey Hart fan. I'm much more a Bill Kreutzman fan.

I've never heard the Godchaux lp and never even knew it existed until the box set mentioned it. . . . I just like the gospel element that they and Jerry shared on these solo sessions, it was a joyous musical meeting, and I like their contributions to "Wake of the Flood" and beyond. . . . My Grateful Dead collection desire generally stops with "Terrapin Station" though studio lp wise. . . I'll grab some live stuff after that, but that was where I took a turn away from the Dead and other rock and deeeeply irretrievably into acoustic jazz for a looooong time.

I just have one of the Garcia and Grisman discs, one of the last officially released one, that stuff in general is not really my cup of tea. I'm no Kingfish and Purple Riders fan by any means. I like Weir. . . with the Dead (Ace is great, it's a Dead album really). . . I like Weir a LOT with the Dead, little outside the Dead. My African experience was principally Eastern and Southern, and Western Africa is a puzzle to me. . . . Probably good food, but I don't think I'll be in your neck of the woods any time soon!

Yes. Though "love" is strong. I love Monk, Ellington, Mingus and a few others. I really enjoy Tanita's work some of the time.
-
Well, I disagree of course. (I LIKE Keith and Donna Godchaux. . . any one have a copy of THEIR lp?) I have learned to LIKE these covers by Garcia over time. . . I find his fusion of influences to be an interesting thing and I listen past the production problems (which really aren't as bad as so many other lps of the time). And truth be told, I was never quite mainstream enough to be a hippy. . . I was just an alienated wierdo from my happy African experience being slamdunked into a rural Ohio late adolescence.

Okay, I finally got this two cd set (Postcards. ..) and I must say. . . half of the disc is great, the other half, and the bonus disc, well. . . not my cup of tea! Hard to say even why half is great and half isn't because they are all pretty similar, but there's just something to half of it that is slick and grating. I really have not warmed up to the Dead material with two drummers after Mickey's return. . . . I much prefer just Billy Kreutzman. . . that has a lot to do with what I don't like about half of this I think. If you think you have to have this and can only find the single disc version, you're really not missing much at all by not having the two tunes on the bonus disc, which are in my opinion the worst of the lot.

I haven't fully digested this set yet, but I'm really enjoying this six cd box set from Rhino of his five solo cds, with a lot of extra tracks on each cd, and including a sixth cd of extras. There is actually a lot of variety in his recordings, and the playing is excellent throughout, and this box set is well remastered with a nice booklet. For fans of the very musically well-heeled Mr. Garcia this is well worth exploring. I got mine at a great price from cduniverse.com as well.

Kevin. . . I like it!
-
I'm in the minority too. I enjoy the Night of the Cookers volumes, but I like jam sessions and that could be it; this has that something that a lot of rehearsed studio sessions don't, and that is a something I like!
-
Yes, goodbye to Mr. Huff. I think he's a good singer and a nice person and I'm going to really miss him in the competition!
-
Book Fever. . . I can't pass by a library without getting it! Nice cover, thanks!
-
Forget that stuck-up old dude. If you want Booker covers to get attention you need to make something like this into something like "Booker Fever" Like the Sinatra choices, they already own the rights to the cover art. . . .That's gotta save a few reissue dollars!

AOTW 12/22-12/28 BLACKSTONE LEGACY Woody Shaw
jazzbo replied to sidewinder's topic in Album Of The Week
I have yet to hear the lp or the cd version, but I did realize that they had to trim about two minutes from the total of both lps to fit it onto a cd. . . and that doesn't normally sound like something I'd want! So I guess I'll probably seek out the lp version one day soon. . . . I sort of enjoy having at least one session of one of my favorites NOT acquired. . . I HATE to get to the end of the work of one of my favorites! -
I didn't dig the Queen tune (just didn't seem to fit with my idea of a tune for the big band night mostly, and really didn't have much to distinguish it vocal-wise to my ears) but I thought her version of "What are you Doing with the Rest of your Life" was perhaps my favorite performance of hers. I only count one "white chick" who I thought did an okay job. Otherwise, as much as I LOVE George, he didn't take any chances and fell flat to me, and Latoya SLAYED with her performances. And I liked Jasmine's second performance---it was perhaps her very best yet. The band. . . well I knew they wouldn't get much chance to shine on their own, but they did a decent job. I didn't recognize anyone. The drummer was cool.
