  1. Understood. Take about half the Beatles, for example! Silly stuff! Some people like it for some reason. I'd rather listen to Monchur!
  2. Hey Brandon, lots of other stuff sounds silly to me that you don't seem to think is silly, res gustibus non disputandae sunt!
  3. As an outcast I had to vote for Exile.
  4. I wonder if they are still using scans of actual original lps for covers of this series? (I was thinking that the were, still).
  5. I'm not really sure that the previous discussion decided that. . . anyway, no one seems to know yet! Maybe Kevin B. has heard from Cuscuna but he hasn't elaborated. . . .
  6. I had to overhear a very misinformed long rant about the French from one of those myopic young Republicans this town has a lot of . . . including a lot of misinformation that must be travelling around about the Versailles treaty and even mentioning Napoleanic times! It was pure venomous racism, though this chump had NO CLUE that he was a racist. I just don't get this holier than thou attitude of the times at least in my neck of the wood by propaganda swallowing reactionaries! But then. . . it's probably just always there since Sumer.

I've been thinking about this proposed Select since you mentioned it. . . and can't imagine what they could include that was the right size. . . .
  8. Very good movie. I would say this is a Phil Dickian sort of story (the elements of memory manipulation, and I love the sort of oblique reference to Time Out of Joints paper slips. . .that may simply be my imagination) and a very realistic depiction of what makes relationships work or not work as far as I'm concerned. And genuinely funny, and decidedly well acted by all cast members. Very impressive; the best film from this write yet in my opinion.
  9. I've got 'em
  10. I'm torn between "All Blues" and "Freddie the Freeloader." I have an lp copy (which is not pitch correct) that I wore out in the seventies, I have the gold US cd, I have a DSD Sony jewel case version, and I have the box set version. . . . I listen to the DSD Sony most. Amazing sound!
  11. "Baby Take a Chance with ME" maybe? This was a forties Mingus tune. Sounds like it was a fantastic show and glad you went!

Wow, a Telarc I might buy!

Yes she IS Canadian. In the liner notes to one of these it mentions that she found her birth mother and I think found that she is of Indian descent. . . . She is a beautiful woman, indeed.
  14. Whew. I'm not the only nut then! Yeah, I need a bigger house too, and am not going to get one. Though I am scratching my head hard as to where I might put a piano!

I agree Eric, very nice arrangements!

    Geri Allen

Geri was a little older that 21 when that was recorded. . . she was born in 1957 (makes her younger than ME, but just barely, and a little older than Sade).
  17. That is clearly the route I chose when I came to that fork in the road!
  18. I haven't heard either of the two new ones and I probably will get the Bad Plus one of these days. I have to say I liked Bad. I haven't really become a fan of Brad.
  19. Or not. Anyone done as I have: have cd two deep in shelves? It's not an elegant solution but it does double capacity. . . .

I know, I haven't mentioned that trio. Had to leave something for someone to mention! I'm warming up to The Gathering. It's something I didn't like at first, but it's talking back to me. . . .

Yeah, all props to you. . . . But I'm not a discographic reading kind of guy. Her webstie www.reneerosnes.com is a nice browse though!
  22. Part of a Blue Note UK series (I see one other listed). Here is what Dusty Groove says: A way more than just a set of Blue Note tunes -- a collection of groovy jazz, soul, Latin, and funk -- mostly pulled from the late 60s and early 70s! The package includes some killer numbers from the many labels that now fall under the EMI umbrella, including Blue Note and some of its other jazz funk cronies back in the day. Titles include "Groovin For Mr G" by Richard Groove Holmes, "Soul Cha" by Joe Torres, "Sarenade To A Savage" by Candido, "I'm A Woman" by Minnie Riperton, "Fever" by Patti Drew, "Deb Samba" by Jimmy McGriff, "Black Byrd" and "Elijah" by Donald Byrd, "The Beat Goes On" by Buddy Rich, "Sookie Sookie" by Grant Green, and newer cuts "Rose Rouge" by St Germain and "Desire On Fire" by EDC.

Okay, I've been listening to a lot of pianists lately (I was thinking it has something to do with the possibility of having a Stienway grand in my home that is impending, but no, it precedes that). . . . And one of them is Geri Allen, who was another amazing player I had not paid enough attention to for years now. Geri has such imagination and such "ears"! And she has created an impressive body of work. I've been playing over and over lately (something I don't normally do) the Jazzpar 98 "Some Aspects of Water" cd on Storyville, a wonderful cd that has great trio, quartet and nonet performances in killer sound! And I keep coming back to "Twenty One" with Ron Carter and Tony Williams. . .a work that had to grow on me, but now needs to be surgically removed! Like Renee Rosnes, another beautiful player with a tremendous touch and control, great writing and arranging skills, and great leadership abilities. Don't make my mistake and overlook her works.

I've ingnored this beautiful and talented pianist for too long, and I'm not sure why! I just hadn't thought to really check her out. . . . I'm making up for lost time. I've been buying her cds when I can. She has become one of my favorite interpreters of Monk; her version of "Four In One" on For the Moment for example. . . she submerses herself into the Monk world and then just remains herself as well. . . no easy trick. She has a beautiful touch and sound on the piano, and she writes interesting material, leads great sessions and arranges well. She's got it all!
  25. No, I'm extemely photographically challenged (and disinterested in pointing it at me or my things).
