  1. On another board we had an interesting discussion about bossa nova and jazz. Some were maintaining bossa nova was jazz, others that it wasn't. I'm in the camp that it's not jazz, something else, but some very jazzy bossa nova happens and I love it. This is one of those recordings. I'm reaching for it lately--it delivers as bossa nova when I have that frequent itch, and there's some great jazz-sounding guitar and "flavor," and the recording is very very good. Fernanda Cunha "Jobim at 90"
  2. Chick Corea"Origin--Live at the Blue Note"--single disc version.
  3. This one again. Their interpretations of Coleman works are very interesting to hear with piano, vibes and four horns. SFJazz Collective Inaugral Season Live 2004, disc 1 Original Compositions and Works of Ornette Coleman
  4. SFJazz Collective Inaugral Season Live 2004, disc 1 Original Compositions and Works of Ornette Coleman
  5. Kenny Barron "Canta Brasil" You might begin dancing. . . .
  6. Billy Strayhorn (Duke Ellington Orchestra really) "Live!!!" Roulette mono LP Apparently little or no Strayhorn here but great Ellington and Ellingtonians in wonderful Roulette sound (I'm a fan of this label's engineering).
  7. Since the record from "Big Fun" was still on the turntable it was easy to flip it over and groove hard to "Go Ahead John." It seems forever and a day I have loved the overdubbed blues trumpet parts from Miles. Miles Davis "Big Fun"
  8. Just so weird. Even if it comes out at the end of March we are six weeks or less away from that . . . and not even a mention in "Upcoming Sets." The Armstrong set has been up there for weeks and is coming out in April. Mosaic really needs to pay some attention to "marketing." I've the same first world problem and as I still have money in the bank I'll pre-order the minute I can. Like you I bought the Mobley set and have no regrets--having this excellent mastering throughout all these sessions, consistent. . . a real plus. Also I was able to sell the separate discs I had and almost paid for the set just from that. Looking forward to this one.
  9. William Parker "Voices Fall from the Sky" disc 3
  10. Bill Barron "Higher Ground"
  11. I had a hankering to hear "Lonely Fire." And it sounds best on LP so I got out my OG 2 LP set. Miles Davis "Big Fun"
  12. Beverly Kelly "Bev Kelly In Person" Riverside/OJC cd Alto Saxophone – "Pony" Poindexter Bass – Johnny Allen Design – Ken Deardoff Drums – Tony Johnson Piano – "Flip" Nunez Vocals – Bev Kelly
  13. Eliane Elias "Impulsive--Eliane Elias, Bob Brookmeyer & the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra play the music of Eliane Elias" Saw the cover and had to pop this in. It has all the right elements for this morning. . . great sound, great playing and interesting compositions.
  14. Ditto. The Lizard was a master of grace and jazz "thinking."
  15. The single disc of that group live at the Blue Note is quite enjoyable. I picked up the box set a few years ago for a ridiculous price ($10 new, I think?!) and while it’s not perhaps Miles-at-the-Plugged-Nickel worthy, still a somewhat underrated point in the Corea discography. (There’s no overlap between the single disc and the box set, btw.) Right now: Perhaps my favorite Corea of the last decades, this and the live Origin material. Right now Abbey Lincoln "Straight Ahead" Candid/Solid Records Japan cd, mono mix. Haven't listened to this for some time. . . what a BAND! Abbey Lincoln — vocals Booker Little — trumpet Julian Priester — trombone Eric Dolphy — alto saxophone, bass clarinet, flute, piccolo Walter Benton, Coleman Hawkins — tenor saxophone Mal Waldron — piano Art Davis — bass Max Roach — drums Roger Sanders, Robert Whitley — congas
  16. Listening to this one again to start off my listening day. I had forgotten how prettily Zoot plays on the soprano sax. Like Barney Wilen he has a distinct and pretty sound on all the horns he plays. I'm also really enjoying Tana's subtle drumming. Zoot Sims "I Wish I Were Twins" Pablo cd
  17. Zoot Sims "I Wish I Were Twins" Pablo cd
  18. SF Jazz Collective "Original Compositions and Works of John Coltrane" disc 2--the original compositions disc. Really good disc! System is sounding really nice after a few changes. What would I do without my recordings and equipment? I don't want to know.
  19. Joe and jazztrain both mentioned him in this thread. I should have mentioned him, and Ernie Caceres as well.
  20. Seems pretty obvious release plans are now different, if the March date was ever a serious one. Seems unlikely it will appear until sometime after the Armstrong set scheduled for April.
  21. Marion Brown "Why Not? Porto Novo! Revisited"
  22. Brandi Disterheft Trio with George Coleman "Surfboard" Another one recorded too loud but a good disc otherwise. Starting off with a Jobim tune was a good move. Ms Disterheft is a very accomplished bass player with a pretty voice and nice phrasing. And of course there's George. . . his presence got me to pull the trigger and add ot my cart.
  23. Marcela "Simples" cd This bright and warm disc is helping me to relax and be less nervous about an upcoming important appointment. This gal has a beautiful voice!
  24. I may have been the first. . . .
  25. Shelly Manne and his Men "Complete Live at the Manne Hole" American Jazz Classics cd
