  1. Kenny Dorham "Quiet Kenny" JVC XRCD
  2. I got an early start today, then got interrupted, and I'm back at it. I started with Lee Morgan, "Lee Morgan Sextet" on Blue Note 24 bit by RVG Japan cd. Lee plays very well, with I suppose Horace Silver arranging and Hank Mobley . . . the playing and setting of both made me think of Monk. A few tracks are better than the others. Followed that one up with "Jams 2--The Two Tenors"--James Moody and Mark Turner, Warner Bros. At times reminding me of Griff 'n Lock, at times Marsh and Konitz, with a dash of Monkeloniousness added by Larry Goldings. Sometimes it seems as if I hear an echo of Monk in many recordings I choose. I wanted to get away from thinking of Monk and succeded with the great Pablo recording, "Dizzy Gillepsie's Big 4." Mickey Roker is the secret ingredient that makes the rise on a number of these Pablo "encounters." He is so controlled yet tastefully tailors the foundation. A master.
  3. Lou Donaldson "Alligator Boogaloo" 24 bit by RVG Blue Note Japan cd What a band! The leader is so soulful but never far from bebop, that adds a special layer to his work with organ trios in my book. Lou Donaldson - alto saxophone Melvin Lastie - cornet Lonnie Smith - organ George Benson - guitar Leo Morris (Idris Muhammad) - drums
  4. Herbie Hancock "Speak Like a Child" 24 bit by RVG Japan Blue Note cd (sort of gatefold cover!) Just arrived in the mail within a lot of 12 24 bit by RVG cds I won via auction. More duplicates than I would like, but I did get titles I really wanted, this one included, at a good price. And will have four to add to the sell pile.
  5. Jack Wilson "Easterly Winds" 24 bit by RVG Blue Note cd
  6. Beat Goes On has it as a 2 cd set now, probably sounds better than the Wounded Bird.
  7. Freddie Hubbard "Gleam" Sony/BGO I totally missed this one in the day, and am glad to have this two cd set now. I appreciate Freddie Hubbard more and more as time goes on. He's gone from "okay" to "wow" in my vocabulary, it took me a while to appreciate him fully.
  8. John Coltrane "Kulu Se Mama" Impulse Japan UHQCD Obviously I wanted more cowbell. As time goes by it occurs to me that this album is sort of a hidden influential time machine in the Coltrane catalog. The large ensemble pieces seem like a window into the 'seventies. I honestly could be convinced that Miles Davis listened to this intently and it shaped his electric period. And even the other numbers could conceivably have inspired explorations like "Go Ahead John" and "Lonely Fire" and '73 to '75 concerts, and perhaps even the mic'ing and mixing and collage of Miles and Teo Macero. Certainly there was a lot of "spiritual jazz" of the next decade that sprang from this soil. A case could perhaps be made that this album is another reason John Coltrane cast such a huge and long shadow. This new mastering is very good. Certainly I have never heard this sound this good.
