  1. http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/06/22_college_football_programs_m.html Has the NCAA's actions gained so much respect from you that you actually believe everything that it says? I doubt there's anybody on this board that has more loathing for the NCAA than I do and that began a long time before the Penn State fiasco. But I also have read from multiple sources that college athletic programs generally operate in the red. You called it a ridiculous statement without putting up anything to refute it. I'll admit I'm wrong if you can find some documentation. I'd also be surprised if Penn State's football program wasn't operating in the black.

  3. School athletic departments generally don't make money. That doesn't stop the dimwitted whores that run the places from pursuing the golden calves continually; but they run athletics as inefficiently as they do everything else. Are there really some comments here that are extrapolating what Penn State specifically went through to every other program? I've long said that there's too much fucking money involved in college sports that perverts the mission of incorporating it into a well-balanced life; for example the ESPN Thursday night games makes me wonder if college presidents wouldn't sign off to playing at 2 in the morning if there was some extra jack in it for them. But to accuse every large program of running dens of sexual abuse of minors is making a ridiculous leap. This is a horrible cautionary tale about letting a program run amok with no accountability at any level and may manifest itself in other ways at other places. And an example should be made of this to prevent anything like it happening elsewhere again.
  4. Very sad news; I need to listen to his stuff some more.
  5. NPR's link no longer has an audio.
  6. Lurking at the Penn State Scout board, this has really shaken the cult, with only the most rabid of the koolaid drinkers giving JoePa a pass on this. Since he's dead anyway, it doesn't really matter except to the few fanatics that also believe in the purity of amateur athletics. I'm really anxious to see what the NCAA Inspector Clouseaus do with this. I'm very confident that their witless gumshoes won't do the right thing, like busting that program down from varsity to "club" status for the next decade or so. They'll do something completely inappropriate like state that anybody receiving a settlement from the school loses all eligibility because of violating the sacred oath that revenues only go to the kollidges or the NCAA itself. Yes I'm kidding; but only a bit.
  7. Now is it time to nuke the program and melt the statue of Saint JoePa down? http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2012/06/29/sandusky-e-mails-revealed/
  8. I'd be surprised if this doesn't get released as a Vandermark "Free Jazz Classics" add on disc like he's done sporadically with the Vandermark 5; usually as a "bonus" disc that is in limited release ie. he sells them at concerts and through a few select places like DMG. Also I appreciate the background story for Nonaah. I haven't listened to it in ages and frankly my ears and head weren't ready for it at the time but I always figured there was something that was driving the live performance and it would be good to revisit it. Not that music can't stand on its own. Plus I appreciate the subjective view of what Vandermark's done; if I don't totally agree with everything I certainly understand where it's coming from.
  9. This was the most important "historical issue" in quite a while in that it didn't just collect together old stuff everybody already knew/knew about, it exposed something altogether unknown of and about people places and things that would go on to be even more known and even more important. AFAIC, stuff like this deserve a category unto itself. Yes, I've written about this release elsewhere and it fills a gap about which virtually everybody but Chuck and the participants were unaware. An extremely important disc imo. And even though I have my own issues with Downbeat, starting when my initial subscription happened just as it went from biweekly to monthly , kudos for the recognition all these releases received.
  10. Seven years ago at the Vision Festival I saw Sorey, as part of their "new talent" or something like that (it was on a Saturday afternoon and not very well attended), play the most stunning solo piano concert I've seen in a long time. To call it percussive would be an extreme understatement, and his musical ideas realized inside the piano were just stunning. I've been disappointed that this aspect of his body of work has been relatively neglected compared to his drumming.
  11. I don't know what the original poster thinks about Globe Unity Orchestra, but Rava's participation in a 75 Baden-Baden concert which was part of the FMP In Retrospect box (the individual discs can be purchased separately) is outstanding and begins with a Rava song, Maranao.
  12. Animosities, I may add, generated because of a simple disagreement regarding the various social and political issues facing us today. On this BBS, it's OK to offer differing view points just so long as it doesn't become a pissing contest. I admit, I have had to adjust my own posting style to one that is a bit less strident. But I am neither a "piece of shit" nor am I stupid, insane or mentally incapacitated in any way. Insults are the opiate of the unwise. I, however, have moved on. Life is too short to get that angry over any discussion which isn't life threatening. Mods, this was between Pete C and me. If you're telling me not to interact with a certain poster, I think some reciprocation would be appropriate, no? Plus this has nothing to do with the subject of the thread, which I've adhered to after being admonished.
  13. Chico Freeman's Kings of Mali sealed the deal for me, if one recording could do so. I haven't listened to it in years yet some of the songs still come right to mind.
  14. I don't know, Pete; I get pretty outraged when I see people acting like some football coaching POS is the real victim here and not the abused victims, who will never be free of what happened to them and probably all of them haven't been accounted for. I really felt a sense of catharsis in my original posts no matter what anybody thought of them. If that's considered trolling, I can live with that. But I understand where the mods are coming from.
  15. Ok I'll try to argue this in a kinder and gentler way since "Jazzbo" said he agreed with most of my original points which have been deleted. Paterno ran a Tony Soprano operation at Penn State; think of it as the Happy Valley NAMBLA branch. He had complete control over the whole shit show and the school couldn't get rid of him when he was well past the state retirement age. Sandusky was his right hand man; he was the defensive genius behind Linebacker U. Without Sandusky (and the past where Paterno played the Temples, Youngstown States and Colgates of the world) there would be no legend; it requires a complete revision of history to suggest otherwise. When a low level member of the crime family saw a "made man" violating a youth in the shower, he didn't go to the police because Don Paterno was the authority. Tony Soprano Paterno did the absolute minimum to put an end to it, whether out of a misplaced old-school sense of loyalty or because you don't go against a made man. This is the same guy that ESPN shills like Musberger and Vitale have lionized for "doing more than the minimum when it comes to complying with the rules" yet that's all he did here. He could've had Sandusky arrested immediately but chose to act otherwise. Sandusky would continue to use the facilities and games on the road as a bait for his future victims; facilities where Paterno had absolute control. The Penn State board of trustees saw the situation for what it was and fired the president and Paterno; it was long overdue in both cases, and they'll be paying out the wazz to the victims for good reason, but it was the right thing to do and the first responsible thing which had been done regarding the whole football program in a long time. If you want a sickening experience, go to some of the Penn State boards and view the cultists thinking that Sandusky was the only offender in this and the program should now proceed unscathed. They're in for a world of hurt if they think that's happening. This is the worst thing to happen in sports maybe forever and if the NCAA doesn't nuke that program from orbit and heap salt on the ashes, then they're complicit too. The program will be a pariah for a long time, particularly as the civil suits keep things in the public's eye. Paterno's dead so he's beyond any punishment for this, although the way he was dealt with could've been avoided if he had as much integrity as his shills say he possessed.
  16. Just got "Before There Was Sound" and am enjoying every bit of it. Glad Chuck stayed on this per the liner notes because this is fantastic stuff.
  17. I think the 1/8 is correct. Careful though; that is heresy to some.
  18. I haven't listened to it for a while but it is probably my favorite Murray disc in recent years.
  19. I love Christmas music also but there's no way I buy any CDs of it; that's what radio and Pandora are for.
  20. Ok thanks; yeah that is strange because I kept waiting to hear him on that of all cuts.
  21. Can anybody identify any cuts where Dolphy is on alto? I've only listened to it in the car a couple times but the only instruments I can hear him for sure are bass clarinet and flute, even though the liners say he's on alto. I'm going to assume the liners are wrong; I wish Blue Note would take the time to actually listen to what they release.
  22. None of these comments are surprising; I like some of Reid's old stuff but he is *extremely* uneven, to the point of being unlistenably embarrassing at times.
  23. I haven't heard the group but it has the potential to be very very good. Please provide feedback on how the weekend goes.
