  1. Same here. I just listened to disc 1 of DP8 ("The Fox") and am thoroughly enjoying it.
  2. Xanadu vinyl was very noisy. Be resigned to what you get, because there ain't any other way to get it.
  3. Many of Gerald Wilson's homes (assuming this meant he owns these houses) may have been for income producing purposes, i.e. renting them out.
  4. The key to understanding a lot of what takes place in this beautiful, maddening world is contained in a single sentence of Robert Gordon's marvelous history of Stax Records, the tiny Memphis studio that soared like Icarus, crashed to earth and changed the world of music in the course of its flight. Describing the company's initial liftoff, co-founder Jim Stewart said: "It happened quickly, but not in a manner that was conscious and direct." More here: WSJ (As usual, if the link doesn't work, try Googling the thread title.)
  5. If you don't already have it, Jimmy Raney's Live in Tokyo is a wonderful record. Are there any other must-haves on this list? I have Al Cohn (138, 179) and Barry Harris (213), and I may have Jimmy Heath (118) and Lucky Thompson (204) - I have to check. How are the Bebop Revisited titles?
  6. Listening to this now. Mickey Fields takes a heckuva solo on Stablemates, really builds momentum while never sacrificing coherency.

Does anyone know why the deluxe edition of Another Self Portrait is now being sold on Amazon only by resellers? Is it in danger of being sold out?
  8. Does he still have the master tapes? The eMusic releases were needle drops.
  9. Well, my needs have changed. I set up the new flat screen, tried hooking up my existing stereo, and really didn't like the results (layout of the room, speaker placement, messing up my usual routine regarding listening to music, and more). I think instead I'll simply go with a Zvox to place underneath the flat screen - reviews are good, and there's been a large price drop, though some reviewers imply the device is mostly to help the hard of hearing, which gives me pause. I still want to replace my aging Yamaha integrated amp; am looking at Marantz, Denon, maybe NAD and Onkyo. I want to spend up to $500. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
  10. Thanks for asking.
  11. When was the cover changed to the one we all know? Which was the original? Why was it changed?
  12. I have some relatives down in that area. The next time I visit, I'll be sure to check out the Arts Garage; thanks for the tip.
  13. Was this ever a legit cover? Saw it on Amazon, never saw it before, says the label is Nippon Columbia (the listing says it's mono even though the graphic says stereo): Amazon

While watching the CMA Awards show, I was surprised to see that Darius Rucker's hit "Wagon Wheel" was co-authored by Dylan. Did some research on the web and it's a fascinating story: Wikipedia.
  15. Has anyone received information on how to download the complete concert?
  16. What a great record. Flew under the radar when it was first released - probably low budget (recorded at a concert in a college on Long Island!) and Columbia wasn't sure how to promote it. With the vantage of time, this was a precursor of "world music" - a true synthesis of jazz, raga and (though played on acoustic instruments) rock. Listen to the intensity with which they play - they start at a high energy level and proceed from there. McLaughlin's runs are amazing; if played on electric guitar they would fill the hall, but the acoustic guitar lends them a subtlety that's very appealing. And McLaughlin's constantly pushing the band: his playing a guitar allows chording as well as single-note runs, and he uses chords almost as a line of attack. I had the pleasure of seeing them live at SUNY-Binghamton a few months after the first album was recorded, and it was a great show.
  17. Yah, I remember you and the Orchid Doctor discussing Pigpen intricacies many years ago.
  18. I feel sad because there are lots of people working in those stores, and they are losing their jobs.
  19. Aren't there lots of live releases on Philology? I'm not familiar with any specific releases, though.
  20. Thanks; I didn't know about the release. I think I have enough acoustic Dead, so will pass this time.
  21. What is the new acoustic Dead?
  22. Got my copy of Dave's Picks 8 in the mail today.
  23. Glasper keeps railing on about the "jazz establishment," but is there really one anymore? There were two examples mentioned in the article: Wynton Marsalis seems to not like him, and the Village Vanguard, which booked him (which connotes some degree of acceptance). But he's probably being honest when he says Roy Ayers means more to him than does Mingus. If it's simply true, there's nothing wrong with it. You can't be forced to love anything, and his love of Ayers's music probably motivated him to become a musician.
  24. Received the CD today. Still no word on the download.
  25. November 16 @ 8 PM: Omer Avital Quintet (Greg Tardy, Yonathan Avishai, Eli Degibri, Daniel Freedman). JCC Kaplan Theatre, 5601 South Braeswood. For additional information: 713-551-7255.
