  1. Thanks for asking.
  2. When was the cover changed to the one we all know? Which was the original? Why was it changed?
  3. I have some relatives down in that area. The next time I visit, I'll be sure to check out the Arts Garage; thanks for the tip.
  4. Was this ever a legit cover? Saw it on Amazon, never saw it before, says the label is Nippon Columbia (the listing says it's mono even though the graphic says stereo): Amazon

    Bob Dylan corner

While watching the CMA Awards show, I was surprised to see that Darius Rucker's hit "Wagon Wheel" was co-authored by Dylan. Did some research on the web and it's a fascinating story: Wikipedia.
  6. Has anyone received information on how to download the complete concert?
  7. What a great record. Flew under the radar when it was first released - probably low budget (recorded at a concert in a college on Long Island!) and Columbia wasn't sure how to promote it. With the vantage of time, this was a precursor of "world music" - a true synthesis of jazz, raga and (though played on acoustic instruments) rock. Listen to the intensity with which they play - they start at a high energy level and proceed from there. McLaughlin's runs are amazing; if played on electric guitar they would fill the hall, but the acoustic guitar lends them a subtlety that's very appealing. And McLaughlin's constantly pushing the band: his playing a guitar allows chording as well as single-note runs, and he uses chords almost as a line of attack. I had the pleasure of seeing them live at SUNY-Binghamton a few months after the first album was recorded, and it was a great show.
  8. Yah, I remember you and the Orchid Doctor discussing Pigpen intricacies many years ago.
  9. I feel sad because there are lots of people working in those stores, and they are losing their jobs.
  10. Aren't there lots of live releases on Philology? I'm not familiar with any specific releases, though.
  11. Thanks; I didn't know about the release. I think I have enough acoustic Dead, so will pass this time.
  12. What is the new acoustic Dead?
  13. Got my copy of Dave's Picks 8 in the mail today.
  14. Glasper keeps railing on about the "jazz establishment," but is there really one anymore? There were two examples mentioned in the article: Wynton Marsalis seems to not like him, and the Village Vanguard, which booked him (which connotes some degree of acceptance). But he's probably being honest when he says Roy Ayers means more to him than does Mingus. If it's simply true, there's nothing wrong with it. You can't be forced to love anything, and his love of Ayers's music probably motivated him to become a musician.
  15. Received the CD today. Still no word on the download.
  16. November 16 @ 8 PM: Omer Avital Quintet (Greg Tardy, Yonathan Avishai, Eli Degibri, Daniel Freedman). JCC Kaplan Theatre, 5601 South Braeswood. For additional information: 713-551-7255.
  17. The WB Shop is having a one-day sale on DVDs, up to 82% off with free shipping. You can get an additional 15% off using the coupon code SAVE15. WBshop.com
  18. I know! Right now, I'm looking at the Jazz on Vogue box set. It's $59.49 on the ImportCDs site, and $41.91 on Amazon Marketplace - sold by ImportCDs!
  19. Read Lou Reed’s Obituary, Placed By Laurie Anderson In Their Local Paper
  20. I was at one of these shows (the late show of the last night, where, he announced to the audience, he needed to reperform The Purple Lagoon to get it correct for the record).
  21. Just listened again to Mobley's "A Slice Of The Top," and was surprised to hear how Billy pushed the band, like a great big band drummer. I always knew him to have that insinuating, seductive swing, but to hear him play the toms hard and overtly, brassy cymbals shining, was truly something special.
  22. Just snagged some great box bargains at ImportCD: The Rubinstein for $90.11 Haydn Complete Symphonies (Dennis Russell Davies) for $18.74 The Living Stereo box for $72.79. It was instructive to see how much lower these prices were than on Amazon. I'll definitely look here again in the future.
  23. I'll be spinning this later today...
  24. Another great is gone. RIP.
  25. Thanks; that was interesting.
