  1. Sigh. It was nice having her store around while I lived in Stamford. I wish her well.

I've owned a bootleg of the Isle of Wight concert for many years. The 3 tracks from there on Self Portrait have a very odd sound quality; I wonder whether Sony has improved on it. Interestingly, there's an amateur video (!) of the concert on YouTube. New Morning has always been one of my favorite records.

Columbia Records will release Bootleg Series Vol 10: Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) by Bob Dylan on 27 August 2013. This latest volume of the long-running Bootleg Series includes unreleased recordings, demos and alternate takes drawn mainly from the 1970 studio recording sessions that resulted in Self Portrait and New Morning albums. In total 35 rarities and previously unreleased recordings including a previously unavailable version of Only A Hobo and the demo version of When I Paint My Masterpiece. Another Self Portrait will be offered in two-disc and four-disc configurations, with the latter taking the form of a deluxe box set, which will include for the first time the complete performance by Bob Dylan and The Band from the Isle of Wight Festival on August 31, 1969. The box set comes in a slip case and will also include the newly remastered version of the 1970 Self Portrait album, in its entirety with original sequencing, in addition to two hardcover books. See here: Super Deluxe Edition
  5. Did you see Jaco's thumb in the Joni Mitchell picture??
  6. While I have no direct knowledge of the issues raised in the email, note that the entire doubt about Mr. Brown stems from this one sentence in the CSM article: "Asiana Airlines had no record of a Tom Brown working for the organization." It's certainly in their self-interest to cast doubt on the issues raised in the email.
  7. When I was a teenager, the Bose 901 speakers were very controversial. Most swore by them, but some thought music should project towards the listener, not bounced off the walls. They were out of my price range, so I couldn't form an opinion. RIP.
  8. Your post had me revisit archive.org, and I now see they have V-Discs 100 - 903. Anyone familiar with some good ones to start with? http://archive.org/details/V-discs1-991943-1944
  9. This has been mentioned before on our site, but it can't be mentioned enough! They can all be downloaded through the link Aloc gave. I mentioned it last year - see post #71: It was also discussed here, where mention is made of a box set that compiled jazz musical highlights from the shows: For those just interested in the music, the box might be a better bet. The shows themselves are of their time: a mix of music, comedy, shout-outs to the troops, and whatnot, with Master of Ceremonies Ernie "Bubbles" Whitman throughout. It takes a lot of time to listen to all of them. The box might have a little better sound quality, since it was worked on by Wally Heider. A discography of the Jubilee series can be found here: http://home.swipnet.se/dooji/jubilee.htm
  10. She's a very interesting singer, giving her material a downtown/new wave/slightly sinister tone. Tonight I heard "Dedicated To The One I Love" (from "Romantically Helpless"); without changing the words, she gives the song a dark, moody interpretation. Worth a listen.
  11. On my drive home today I was listening to Ben Sidran's interview with Blythe. Here's wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.
  12. He'll always be Alex to me.
  13. I did. Went on vacation in the interim, haven't listened to it yet. But I will...
  14. No. I think it was UA.
  15. But on the other hand, the audience has rights, too. If Perugia held 4,000 people, they all paid for their tickets, and if 3,990 of them didn't take pictures, why were they punished?
  16. Why? It's one small aspect of his personality, similar to Horowitz's finickiness. If you like the recordings, then it's mostly good. After all, you wouldn't refuse to see an Alex Baldwin movie because of his Twitter rants...? Having said that, Keith was wrong to accept the engagement if he was going to be on edge; that's not fair to the audience.
  17. I don't have much '78 Dead. Not sure what I'm in for. I cracked open the recent '77 box and listened to the first show. Very, very nice.
  18. He's reminding me of Alex Baldwin.
  19. You have your music.
  20. A lot of those are special recordings, they have a wonderful feel: Burrell, Dorham, Byrd, Turrentine. A thought: I think Horace tried some of the same tracks in the studio before recording at the Gate. Could it be that Alfred heard the material and thought it would sound better recorded live? He seemed to put as much care into the live dates as into the studio ones, such as bringing Grant Green in to the Turrentine date.
  21. No, it's with strings (ala Charlie Parker with Strings). Actually, I just found the performance on YouTube: http://youtu.be/AdvLh89I0YM I guess I now know the album it's from. Is this currently available?
  22. There's a recording of Hawk with strings playing a lullaby (might be Brahms' Lullaby, not sure, but it's used to rock babies to sleep...you know how to hum it). Does anyone know which album this comes from?
  23. I'd never heard of that title. Has it ever been issued on CD?
  24. The book "The Introvert Advantage" has a fascinating section about how the brains of introverts and extroverts are different, how they process sensations and thoughts differently and through different neural pathways through the brain.
