  1. But Seeking is from 1969, with the same band as on Flight For Four. Are they really so different?
  2. Sco and John Medeski will be playing some dates as part of Phil Lesh and Friends: Lesh.net
  3. OK, I'll consider.
  4. Cassettes can last 30 years plus, but if they've been in someone's car deck and have been stopped, started, rewinded and fast forwarded many times, the tape is likely to be stretched. I do like the analogue sound of tape, especially on headphones, its pretty damn loud compared to MP3. But you listen to a lot of 20's, 30's and 40s jazz on cassette issued in the 70s and 80s and its in desperate need of a decent remastering which the golden era of CD reissues brought in. I have quite a few of the BBC cassettes that issued 1920s and 30s jazz in stereo. Surprisingly, it worked! Was that Robert Parker? I had the Johnny Dodds and loved the sound.
  5. I bought Seeking on Hat Art. The music just didn't do much for me - that whole style doesn't. I need more of a tonal center than what they provide, so I guess I'll be staying away from this reissue. I don't at all doubt the technical proficiency of the musicians - I loved Carter's work on Horace Tapscott's The Dark Tree. But there's a hole in the center of this style of music that I can't gloss over.
  6. Not a completist at all, just curious.

Thanks for posting that; it gives me a lot of insight into the project. I don't think I'll be getting it - it looks like his Americana music has crossed over into New Agey. Not my cup of meat.

Anyone heard anything about this one? Looks like high concept, but the listing gives no details (release date June 18): Amazon
  14. He always had the coolest sideburns.
  15. This is missing one track from the session (as stated in the liner notes). I think it's available on the Mosaic and on a Chronogical Classics. I concur about this being great stuff. I much prefer Ammons to Lewis - more fire.
  16. I've ripped many of my tapes to mp3 (by first transferring them to CD). Tapes that sound pretty bad on my stereo don't sound so bad in my car or on an iPod boom box. Overall, it's a worthwhile endeavor, but it does take a lot of time. To save time, you might want to transfer them a tape side at a time, and later on separating them into individual tracks.
  17. Happy birthday, Chuck!
  18. Warner Music Japan.
  19. I just saw this on the CDJapan site. I have no further info on the release. CDJapan Very clever follow-up to this release from the '70's:
  20. Cranshaw's had an amazing run with Sonny. 51 years!
  21. Is there a "Philadelphia sound"?
  22. Just got word that Brotzmann and Keiji Haino will appear in Houston on October 9.
  23. Happy birthday, Larry!
  24. Thanks. I have the two Chambers/Blakey tracks on Drums Around The Corner.
  25. Question re the Paul Chambers Mosaic Select: I have the 1987 Bass On Top and the Paul Chambers Quintet Connoisseur releases. Is the sound on the Mosaic Select appreciably better?
