  1. It give me hope that their reissue program still lives.
  2. This seems a good place to note this Nat Hentoff article I read recently in the Journal. While not specifically about jazz, it is mentioned... Cantors, Klezmorim and Crooners 1905-1953
  3. Amazon - August 10
  4. Interestingly, it seems that Amazon has pulled all their Chronological Classics downloads.
  5. August 8: Lucky Millinder, bandleader, 1900 Benny Carter, alto sax, composer, bandleader, 1907
  6. I know the availability of the 2 MJQ albums on Apple Records has been discussed here many times. According to Discussions Magazine, all of the label's releases will be reissued beginning October 26th, including digital downloads. This will be of interest to many here: UNDER THE JASMIN TREE (1968) & SPACE (1969) by the Modern Jazz Quartet (a 2-on-1 CD) Two albums of high-class improvisational bebop recorded by Atlantic Records legends the MJQ while on secondment to Apple. With their unique line-up of piano, vibes, bass and drums, the Quartet brought old-style tuxedo excellence and cool organic jazz to the Apple catalogue.
  7. August 7: Rahsaan Roland Kirk, saxophone, manzello, stritch, flute, 1936 Howard Johnson, tuba, 1941
  8. August 6: Abbey Lincoln, singer, 1930 Charlie Haden, bass, 1937

  10. I think he hit his peak in the '68 - '71 timeframe. From Uncle Meat through Fillmore East, there was a consistent level of inspired creativity. Then came his fall from the stage, and, except for little glimmers along the way, he kinda lost it. Maybe it was the hospital bills and the demands of feeding a large family...who knows. But from Over-Nite Sensation and Apostrophe onward, it was all downhill.
  11. August 5: Jeri Southern, singer, piano, 1926 Lenny Breau, guitar, 1941

Agreed, but I'll still get it anyway. I've never heard the first four Check out the astonishing artistic growth between albums one and two. And then the turn from album 3 (political themes) to 4 (inward pursuits). Album 4 ("Another Side Of...") really laid the groundwork for much of the rock lyrics of the 2nd half of the Sixties.
  13. August 4: Louis Armstrong, trumpet, singer, 1901 Sonny Simmons, alto sax, 1933
  14. Interesting email from Dead.net: What a long, strange trip it's been! In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, we proudly present THE WARNER BROS. STUDIO ALBUMS, a five-LP boxed set commemorating those tremendous and transformative early years. Due September 21st, the collection contains The Grateful Dead (1967), Workingman's Dead, and American Beauty (1970), plus the original mixes for Anthem Of The Sun (1968) and Aoxomoxoa (1969), available on vinyl for the first time in nearly 40 years! This stunning set also features detailed replicas of the original albums housed in a hard-shell case with an accompanying 12" x 12" book containing unpublished photos and new liner notes by our friend Blair Jackson. And as always, we've ensured the highest degree of quality - these albums were pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI using lacquers cut from the original analog masters. Now all you've got to do is gently place the needle on the record and slip into auditory bliss! Order from Dead.net and receive an exclusive reproduction of a rare 1968 7" single (in a picture sleeve) that features the studio version of "Dark Star" (b/w "Born Cross-Eyed"), clocking in at a concise 2:38. You'll also receive a reproduction of a rare 1967 promotional poster from the Warner Bros. Records archive. The 7" and poster are yours only when you place your order at Dead.net. Dead.net

  16. The Forward just published an article on Mahler, in which they write "As if to prove the point, EMI Classics has just released an excellently chosen 16-CD set of Mahler’s complete works, including no fewer than nine comparative performances of his “I am Lost to the World” (“Ich bin der Welt Abhanden Gekommen”), a song of cosmic world-weariness." Full article here.
