  1. I've posted some info on the Miles Davis "Ascensceur pour l'échafaud" reissue in the thread dedicated to that album.
  2. The personal conflict between Dan Gould and Michael Ricci goes back to January, when Dan lost his temper in his AAJ thread about the Bob Weinstock interview. I think the thread has been deleted since then. Too bad that this board has to suffer from this. It won't help AAJ either.
  3. Art Pepper - Smack Up ~ CCD-7602-2 ~ $14.98 Thelonious Monk - Plays Duke Ellington ~ RCD-201-2 ~ $14.98 Bill Evans - New Jazz Conceptions ~ RCD-223-2 ~ $14.98 Cannonball Adderley/Milt Jackson - Things Are Getting Better ~ RCD-1128-2 ~ $14.98 Chet Baker - Plays the Best of Lerner & Loewe ~ RCD-1152-2 ~ $14.98 http://www.fantasyjazz.com/html/20-bits_newest.html It seems that Fantasy is continuing to offer two lines of audiophile reissues, K2 CDs and hybrid SACDs. Not the same titles, but most of the current SACD batch were previously reissued on K2 also, before SACDs existed.
  4. I just picked up the Art Pepper Hollywood All Star sessions 5CD set at a local Zweitausendeins shop (30 Euro). It is manufactured in Germany, but the remastering is most likely the same as the US set. When spinning CD1 I was surprised that there was no stereo effect. I checked with my headphones, and indeed it is mono. The disc says "Stereo AAD". It is surprising for an official 1979 studio recording to be mono, especially since Session 2, which is split between CD1 and CD2, is stereo on CD2. Then I picked up a CD-R with MP3s from the same box set, which I've downloaded from Emusic two years ago. The MP3s were probably taken from the US box set. The sound in the files from CD1 is mono too. So it seems that there is a problem with the first disc on all sets. Can someone confirm this with his set? Does anyone have information on this defect?
  5. Tom, Check the LP Laundry discussion in this forum. For sweeping the dust from the record just before playing, special brushes with soft thin hair are the best in my view. They can still be found in music shops (where LPs are getting more popular again).
  6. The Minimum Search word lenght can be set in the admin control panel http://www.invisionpower.com/documentation...hp?page=27&p=19 Allowing a search on a word with 3 caracters would be better indeed. I don't think it will increase the server load, as most members don't like to search
  7. I just bought the latest reissue of this album (complete edition, 26 tracks) by Universal France (981 574 5, digipack). The booklet says: I have no idea what that last sentense means, but the new reissue sounds brighter than the japanese reissue I've got (PHCE-4181, from 1997 or 1999), but not better. It's a matter of taste which one to prefer. I don't have the 1988 CD to compare it to.
  8. Jim, you could install such a copy protection processor in your organ, so there will be fewer bootlegs of your concerts floating around. Or they will be sold as newly discovered Sun Ra recordings
  9. Hello Michel, Have you read the guitarist's name or heard it on an announcement (perhaps mispronounced)? His 1989 album Prime Time has a certain Terry Evans on guitar (probably not identical to the singer referred to on AMG), who is also present on this 1988 concert in Germany: http://www.jazzforum-flensburg.de/3sat_jazzt.htm
  10. I think that this second batch of Fantasy SACDs is very encouraging, because the remastering is excellent, and is has been done by Fantasy engineers themselves (with DSD equipment leased from Sony it seems). Although XRCDs and K2 CDs are very fine, I don't like the JVC remastering engineer's preference for a analytical sound (not psycho-analytical, just very sharp and detailed ). The discs I have heard from the second Fantasy batch sound warm and full, more like MFSL or DCC remasterings, which I always preferred over XRCDs. I hope Fantasy will do more SACDs and also include some titles which have not been reissued as many times before. The Gil Evans SACD from the first batch was a very important reissue (first stereo release), also for those who don't care about SACD.
  11. Hot Wheels collectors are maniacs. The winner "the-toy-store" certainly knows what he is doing and will be able to make a profit by resselling the items separately.
  12. The Jazzmatatazz Upcoming Releases page has direct links to the Verve CDs on CD Universe
  13. http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/TV/02/06/s...t.ap/index.html They should hire some chinese censorship pros .... http://edition.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/asiapcf/...14/sars.censor/
  14. Thanks Daniel, this worked for me too. But I doubt that there will be much activity on the board, with these obstacles.
  15. I can't log into the Bluenote Europe forum. I have registered and received a confirmation email, but after I enter the user/pass data in the login screen a browser pop up screen opens: Enter Network Password Site: stage.bluenoteeurope.com Username: Password which should not happen, as it is a login box for the server, not the board. My user/pass for the board don't work in that box and I get this message: "Authorization Required - This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. " So I'm locked out. I was about to open the first "Letter to Norah" thread ... B)
  16. Thanks Chaney for the tip. I just registered to reserve my nickname. Nice content so far: two spam messages by a deleted poster and a critical question on copy protection by Kevin Bresnahan
  17. It could be that the cookies set by the board on your PC have a validity of several weeks or months.
  18. The Cannonball Adderley SACD is another sonic winner (I assume that the music on these SACDs is well known). I have no CD to compare it with (I gave the CD away before receiving the SACD), so I limit myself to the absolute sound quality. It is an excellent live recording, very natural and lively. The only flaws are the boxy sound of the piano (recorded with just one microphone) and the saturation of the mic or tape during the loudest bass drum hits. Like the others, this SACD sounds very smooth, with no trace of harshness. I don't know if this is due to the hi-rez technology or the remastering, but it seems that Fantasy has achieved true audiophile quality with this SACD batch (with reservations on the recording quality of the Massey Hall disc). I can't see how MFSL or Analogue Productions could have done better. The Cannonball SACD has been remastered by Kirk Felton, the other two by Joe Tarantino.
  19. I received my order from CDUniverse today. All the Fantasy SACDs are mastered by Fantasy at Berkeley, whereas the latest K2 CD versions were remastered at JVC. This lets one expect at least a difference in remastering. - Art Pepper + Eleven sounds very smooth and full, without lacking detail. In comparision, the US K2 CD version sounds a bit steely and at the same time muddy. The upgrade was definitely worth it. This is my 4th digital version of this album - The Quintet - Jazz at Massey Hall sounds much better than on my late 80's CD, but this is most likely due to the remastering. I haven't heard the K2 version. This is no audiophile recording of course, and is has some drop outs too, like the previous CD versions I have yet to give Cannonball Adderley - In San Francisco a listen
  20. My sincere condolences, Tom.
  21. Thanks Deus. Is the track listing identical to the official Mosaic set? Zweitausendeins says 81 tracks, but AMG lists 101 tracks for the Mosaic.
  22. I saw this Ellington set at a Zweitausendeins shop today. It is a bizarre Mosaic-style set: - It is a long black box, twice the size of a CD. No LP size booklet inside, obviously - The front has a miniature reproduction of the Mosaic cover, and a red/white "Spiegel Edition" sticker below. Spiegel is the biggest german weekly news magazine (www.spiegel.de) - the back has a description of the set in german So it looks like Mosaic is now licensing it's artwork and liner notes after their license of the music has expired. This set is for the german market only, I doubt wether they would do that on the US market, as this is likely to damage Mosaic's reputation.
  23. From the posts on the AAJ thread, It seems that people can access the organissimo.net address, but not log in. When I go to the .net page and log in (successfully), I am redirected to the corresponding .org page. Those who cannot access the .org domain probably get an error message instead.
  24. "Organissimo down?" thread on AAJ
