  1. Yes, this is possible: - Default browser: File --> preferences --> tick "http" and "https" and "check if opera is the default browser" and click Apply - Import favourites: File --> Import --> Internet Explorer favorites --> find the My favorites folder in your system
  2. Really strange, all those lurkers constantly browsing the board ...
  3. Dunno if this has already been mentionned, but Naxos is not just a budget label, it is now the classical music label with the largest in print repertoire. They record many works which are being ignored by the "majors". Naxos CDs also remain in print much longer.
  4. Thanks for the info, Deus. When reading the thread title I thought Mosaic was selling out on Zweitausendeins The Jack Johnson box was way too expensive in most european stores (80-90 Euro, as opposed to $60 in the US). So the 2001 price is much better, but still higher than their previous offers on Miles box sets (10 Euro per CD).
  5. You can also install Netscape/Mozilla, which is free, whereas the free sponsored version of Opera has an ugly ad in the browser window. http://www.mozilla.org http://www.opera.com If resetting the IE security settings doesn't help and no other security software deactivating javascript is installed, it may be that the Windows registry is messed up, which most certainly means that you would have to reinstall Windows. So it's much easier to install and use a different browser. Maybe you will prefer it to the IE after some time. Mozilla and Opera both can import your IE favourites. You can continue to use Outlook Express for your email, it is not necessary to switch to the mail functions of the other browsers. Good luck
  6. In the Moncur set, only the outer leaflet (can't find the correct words) of the booklet is in color, so that makes one page for the box set cover and 3 pages for color reproductions of individual covers. There are b&w photos inside. Could be the case of the other sets too.
  7. I only have the Moncur set. It cas CD-size color reproductions of the "Evolution", "Some other stuff" and "One step beyond" covers, but none of the other covers (Destination out, Hipnosis, 'Bour Soul)
  8. I visit the board many times a day, and I haven't noticed a performance difference during the last days.
  9. I've posted a link to this thread in their Jazz DVD thread
  10. It seems all related to javascript. I tried it by deactivating javascript within Opera, and the boxes above the post window stopped working. Enable Browser JavaScript
  11. They seem to use album covers instead of smilies
  12. I'm pretty sure that Javascript is deactivated in your browser settings. Those buttons only work with Javascript enabled. You can check this in Internet Explorer --> Tools --> Internet options --> Security --> Custom level --> Scripting: enable Or you run a firewall that blocks Javascript code. As many websites now use Javascript, this would be too restrictive.
  13. Eric, What CD release did you compare the SACD with? I'm sure that the SACDs are an improvement over the dated remasterings from the late 80's, but not necessarily over the recent K2 CDs. Thanks
  14. I mainly have experience with Atlantic material that Collectables licensed and seems to have remastered themselves. (I posted a long detailed review of those on the defunkt BNBB board). I was generally disappointed. The best CDs sounded merely acceptable, but some are really bad, mainly because they used noise reduction software which left audible artefacts. I first bought the Giuffre stuff on Collectables before finding a Mosaic set. The difference in sound is important, some albums were almost unlistenable on a good hifi set because one can hear strange artificial noises on top of the clarinet. The Mosaic set has more tape hiss, but sounds natural. Another bad transfer is John Lewis' "Jazz Abstractions" (with Ornette Coleman!). There are many drop outs, and at some time one channel completely dissappears for 20 seconds. Buy it only if you need the music. On the other hand, the "2 albums on 1CD" reissues of Paul DEsmond RCA albums sound quite good. Not as good as the latest remasters, but at least they haven't fiddled with the tapes and seem to have taken the CD masters from the first RCA reissues.
  15. I have a Sony 19" CRT monitor and a Philips 15" flat screen both connected to my PC, with a Matrox dualhead graphic card, so I can have two program windows side by side. The small monitor is also alternatively switched to a server which is running all the time. I'll probably replace the 19" monitor with a 17" flat screen soon (same screen size, but much smaller enclosure).
  16. Hello Tjobbe, I just ordered the Cannonball and the Art Pepper SACDs from cduniverse.com ($14 promo). Maybe I'll get the Massey Hall too (but it was still $20 there). I already have the Pepper on a K2 CD and will be able to compare. The first SACD batch from Fantasy wasn't that great from the sonic point of view (except the Gil Evans), so I'll use this comparision to see if upgrade is worth it. I don't expect the SACDs to be better than DCC remastered CDs. The Cannonball will be available on January 27 only, so it will take some before I can report on those discs.
  17. I don't think the technology really makes the difference between those badly remastered CBS CDs from the 80's and the excellent remasters from the late 90's. Audiophile companies such as MFSL and DCC made CDs at that time that still sound as good and often better than the latest "24Bit" remasters from the originating label. The problem with those crappy early CDs from CBS was that the engineers tried to eliminate tape hiss by simply reducing treble level. Probably because they thought that the consumer expects a CD to be complete free of noise. The new remasters have the complete frequency range, including the hiss. Many times there were also problems with the tape sources (for example on "Miles ahead"). The original tapes were only found and used later. If you want answers to the exact equipment which was used, you might check the Steve Hoffman Forum
  18. I've seen OOP Mosaics go for less than half the usual ebay.com price on Ebay Germany. Some of these auctions didn't even have "Mosaic" in the title, the sellers probably didn't know these sets are high in demand amongst collectors.
  19. The only Clifford Brown album I've seen in this series is "Memorial album". I guess it uses the McMaster remastering, which is clearly inferior to the current RVG reissue.
  20. www.mps-label.de is the homepage, a redirector to the german Universal Music jazz site www.jazzecho.de
  21. At the record store: "I'm sorry, Evolution has been out of print for a very long time .... but there is a nice T-shirt with the cover art available"
  22. You can also download it for free from Emusic, if you register for a trial account: http://www.emusic.com/cd/10588/10588846.html
  23. I don't have the box set, but compared to the McMaster CD of "Go", the RVG sounds more dynamic and direct, but the soundstage is almost reduced to mono. It is one of the more controversial RVGs. So you are certain to have two versions of this album which will sound very different
  24. From an audiophile or nostalgia point of view? What's the point in having only two tracks from "Somethin' Else"?
  25. No problem, as prices are in US dollars
