  1. Unlike in the US, in the EU those CDs will be seized by the customs ...
  2. This happened with "Night dreamer" of the previuous batch already. RVG's remastering sound signature doesn't seem to be very reliable anymore. And yes, CD Universe is very good for overseas orders.
  3. The only other album that I bought 3 times is Freddie Redd "The connection" 2001: bought french digipak reissue with late 80's McMaster remastering 2003: bought JRVG on Ebay - horrible "AM" sound 2004: bought TOCJ on Ebay - sounds very well balanced and dynamic 2005: will pass on the RVG reissue
  4. I started buying jazz reissues in the CD era. Kind of Blue: bought it 4 times: - ca 1989: First CD release (awful muffled sound) - 1995: Sony SBM-remastered gold CD - ca 1997: Miles/Trane box set - 2004: SACD Giant steps: 3 times - late 80's: first CD release - mid 90's: complete Atlantic box set - 2004: Mobile Fidelity remaster
  5. Which doesn't say if he just looked like a bomber or if he really carried a bomb.
  6. The only CD from my collection (2000+ discs, about 200 from the 80's) to have this effect was indeed a Hyperion release. I received replacement discs as soon as I reported the problem, 10 years after the purchase. So, so far I had no CD loss though natural degradation. I wish CD-Rs were that reliable. I had a batch of Fuji CD-Rs with Emusic downloads which became partly unreadable after just 3 years.
  7. Yes, David, thank you. As you probably know Mosaic's overseas shipping rates are very high; my "all-in European price" is lower, so this might be of interest to European members - that's why I posted it here. ← And there is no risk of having to pay customs tax.
  8. Yes, but the same is true when looking at the pictures of some of our members' CD collections ...
  9. Vinyl-only, $40, ... I wonder if Threadgill wants this music to be heard ....
  10. I would rather go for the most ergonomic (silent) one, since speed is not an issue anymore with current computers (unless your mother in law plays the latest 3D games or compresses DVDs to DivX files). With my 4 year old Athlon 1000 I'm almost never in need of more processing power. The fastest CPUs produce a lot of heat and tend to have noisy fans. So I recommend a slower one, which will also save $100-150. Hard drives are all big today, you won`t find a PC with less than 60GB. 120GB is the standard. As far as memory goes, 512MB is enough, unless a lot of graphics/video editing is made on the PC.
  11. According to the sticker on the Miles/Trane box, that one is "remastered in 20bit by Mark Wilder". It could be that Sony has archived the tapes in DSD (transfer of the analog tapes done by Mark Wilder) and made a new DSD-to-PCM (24bit) transfer for the single CD release. I don't think this would make a sonic difference, as the 20bit or 24bit signal needs to be downsampled to 16bit for the CD. Only a new transfer of the analog tapes to digital could sound significantly different, as it requires choices to be made by the engineer. My favourite version is the SACD, which avoids any PCM transfer. I would have bought the concert CD if it was available seperately. A list price of $30, what are they thinking? "Deluxe" 2CD reissues are OK (priced $20) when the added material is closely related to the main recordings, like on the "A love supreme" 2CD reissue, but this Miles concert should have been released seperately, or in a bigger box set with more previously unreleased live recordings.
  12. I think it was discussed here first in a Monk/Trane thread: New Monk-Coltrane Performance Discovered, At Carnegie Hall - WTF??????

  17. Most US K2 CDs I have bought sound more dynamic and immediate than the older OJC remastering. (I A/B'ed them at adjusted volume, because the K2s are generally mastered louder). The instruments have tighter contours and are better seperated. The OJCs sound more distant and dull in comparision. Some OJCs sound a bit thin (lack of lower midrange), while the K2s always sound full and natural. I noticed this especially with the Dolphy box. I don't know which transfers are more close to the original tapes, but the K2s are much more enjoyable, without being manipulated as Blue Note RVGs. The difference can be quite small for some albums. But generally you can't go wrong with the K2s, because they all sound very good and are not much more expensive than the regular OJCs. The remastering quality is more consistent than on the Fantasy SACDs. Another generalization I can make on Fantasy albums is that the DCC discs remastered by Steve Hoffman are again an improvement over the K2s. For some discs such as Bill Evans "Portrait in Jazz" or Vince Guaraldi's "Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus" the difference is spectacular, because only Hoffman managed to do the tape transfer right. But they are OOP and are priced $20-40 on Ebay.
  18. I think the purpose of these rather paranoic rules is that the webcast listeners should not be tempted to record the broadcasts instead of buying the CDs. There are also provisions which prevent the webcast radios to publicize detailed playlists before the broadcast takes place, so to keep listeners from preparing to record specific songs. SEC. 405. SCOPE OF EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS IN SOUND RECORDINGS; EPHEMERAL RECORDINGS.
  19. K2's (and XRCDs) are remastered at the JVC studios in Japan, while the SACDs are remastered at the Fantasy studios. So the CD layer of the hybrid SACDs is not identical to the K2 CDs. It is however newly remastered, not the old remastering from the previous CD reissues. "Conventional old mastering" is not necessarily worse than K2. The quality of a remastering depends less on the technology than on the skills of the engineer and the availability of well preserved original tapes.
  20. But they haven't done SACD reissues for quite some time now. http://www.sa-cd.net/alltitles/131
  21. Running low! Many of the recent Mosaic full size box sets have consisted of Verve material, so there seems to be a readiness at Universal to license material to Mosaic (although under special agreements, the boxes being sold at retail stores too). But it could be that they want to keep the small box set (3CDs) business to themselves
  22. I thought this type of music was called "acid jazz"?

Bertrand, You are right about Baltimore. Don't know where I got the Washington bit. Sorry.

The best Gary Thomas leader albums albums are (IMHO): - Exile's Gate - The Seventh Quadrant - Till We have faces The other albums are in the same vein but a notch below, still very good. Absolutely avoid "Overkill", which is a rap album, and a poor one at that AMG discography
