Surprising, I didn't know that. The LP version of the Alex Cline album is available though. Are there other titles which were issued on CD and have gone OOP, apart from those two?
-
I haven't seen new ECM reissues for a very long time. 85% of their catalog is available, and the remaining OOP titles will probably never be reissued on CD. Some Steve Kuhn reissues were announced on jazzmatazz but never materialized.

I like it too, but I consider it as a concert DVD, with the documentary to be just a filler. This DVD was also discussed here: Miles at IOW festival on DVD

This is not a tax (paid to the government), it is a levy paid to copyright rightholders. This isn't new either. According to EU copyright law, such a levy must be paid on all devices which can be used to make copies of music, video and all other copyrighted material, and on the blank media. It is a compensation for the rightholder for private copies (which are allowed in Europe). The amount is open to negociation between the rightholders and the equipment and blanks producers, under the mediation of the government. In Spain, an old formula from the tape age based on minutes of music that the medium can hold was applied, and amounted to a levy of more than 50 euro an a hard drive MP3 player. The levy madness is worst in Germany, wher they are raised on computers, printers and even faxes. I hope the system will be challenged as far as MP3 players sre concerned, because copying the music to the player is not a way of multiplying it but simply of using it.

Hey, I found this for 7 Euro last week in a second hand store, I also got the two volumes of "Live in Berlin" for the same price. My Top Wanted are: - Tony Cue - Mainly Mancini - Wayne Horvitz - Nine Below Zero - Gil Evans - Where Flamingos fly - London Jazz Composers Orchestra - Double Trouble - Gil Melle - Complete Blue Note sessions

I didn't know her name either, but I just saw she played in Dawson's Creek, that awful TV series where teenagers live daily dramas and constantly speak like philosophers. The DVDs are now being used for interrogatories on Guantanamo Bay!

Must be Elvin, because it can also be heard on passages where piano and bass sit out.

It is indeed different from the 1961-65 Grant Green music, but some of the stuff is very good in it's genre.

Apparently the content is the same, as no one discussing this set mentionned a difference: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=4716 http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=5537 P.S.: No, I did not spend the last hour researching on this

It looks like there is also a UK version of the set, without the ugly "Spiegel" logo": http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/jazz/reviews/el...n_reprise.shtml I just noticed a big difference besides tha packaging: these european sets have 81 tracks, while the Mosaic set seems to have 103 tracks. Is that correct? http://www.allaboutjazz.com/reviews/r0100_140.htm

This is the "Spiegel Edition", which is sold in Europe. It is a licensed version of the box set, with different packaging. http://shop.spiegel.de/go/see!SPONpvs0-DukeEllington

Is there a logic in the track selection of every CD or are these rather interchangable samplers? I am not familiar with Grant Green's later discography.

What about the BMW (!) Isetta, the "rolling egg"? http://www.cqql.net/bmw.htm -
From the biographies I've read (Miles, Bird), it already started in the bebop period (late 40's) Some links on the subject: Gerry Mulligan on drug addiction THE PLAYBOY PANEL: NARCOTICS AND THE JAZZ MUSICIANS (1960)

Making a AMG search for "Blues for Benny", one of the tracks from the LP, only brings up this LP , no CD sampler or other release with a different title. So I guess it never made it to CD. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:x95e8qxnbtc4 GEMM shows two available LP copies under the title "Benny Goodman movie", at $108 (NM) and $30 (VG+) http://www.gemm.com/ddc/search.pl?&a_refno=GML211624252 http://www.gemm.com/ddc/search.pl?&a_refno=GML674560492 There is also a Speaker's Corner LP reissue: http://www.redtrumpet.com/software/item.ph...&sid=1033705398

Great music, good recording quality (mono radio recordings)

I just bought the new "Best of Jackie McLean" Fantasy CD, which I got cheap (7 Euro) at Zweitausendeins. http://www.fantasyjazz.com/catalog/mclean_j_cat2.html#5709 This is a very interesting compilation, offering 8 tracks (71 minutes) from 8 different Prestige albums. The new remastering by Joe Tarantino is also very good. So if you don't mind compilations, this is a good way to have some McLean Prestige material.

How many CD’s does a popular jazz artist sell?
Claude replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The only indication I have is the fact that hatOLOGY CDs are released in editions of 3000 CDs, which usually are around for a couple of years. On my copy of Dave Liebman "Bookends", it says "2nd edition of 3000 CDs". Liebman would be in the same selling league as Tyner I guess. But HatOLOGY CDs are rather expensive (the Liebman 2CD set costs $27), and more difficult to find in the US than most jazz labels. -
What if the hard drive fails (the Nr 1 PC hardware defect)? It would be safer to rip the CDs to a lossless format and burn the files onto DVD-Rs (7-10 CDs fit on a DVD-R). These can also fail, but certainly not all at the same time. Anyway, CD pressings are much more durable than burned CDs/DVDs (and hard drives), so the main purpose of the backup would be protection against loss or destruction, not deterioration.
