I only know this one, saw it on Ebay recently: http://www.mediawars.ne.jp/~mundo/collect/...t-montoliu.html AFAIK, it was never reissued on CD here.

Did you keep the "Home cookin'" JRVG?
-
No, I have a few TOCJs remastered in 20Bit, but none of this new series.
-
In my view the format (SACD vs CD) or the remastering technology (16bit, 24Bit) is rather irrelevant compared to the remastering skill and choices of the engineer. Technology does make a difference, but usually this alone is not important enough to justify an upgrade of the discs. Only audiophiles with expensive equipment will hear a difference between SACD and CD, or 16Bit and 24Bit remastering, if the remastering engineer took the same choices for frequency balance, dynaimcs, panning, etc. As far as Blue Note reissues go, I prefer the 90's TOCJ reissues because of the natural non-manipulated sound of the remastering, and I would therefore like to see those disc reprinted instead of yet another new remastering. The TOCJ discs reissued in the spanish Blue Note series are some of the best sounding Blue Note CDs in my collection.

I wonder how long the OJC titles will still be available for download at emusic.com Anyway, I have almost all of them (about 2000 albums), downloaded for 45 bucks when emusic still had an "all you can eat" policy. It will take me a couple of years to listen to all this music. As the sound of these MP3s is rather poor (even for MP3 standards), I use this archive mainly to find the best albums to buy on CD. It would be a pity if the CDs would not be available in a couple of years. I'll make backup copies of my MP3-CDs and deposit them in a bank safe

I just noticed that the advanced music search function on Amazon Germany now allows to exclude CDs with copyprotection from the search results: http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/tg/stores...-/music/search/ (tick the box "Nur ohne Kopierschutz") So it looks like not only a few consumer rights activists and wacko audiophiles care about this.

With a decent sound card and a correct connection of the tape deck to the card, there should not be a significant change in sound. The software will not change the sound unless you have activated some filters by accident. A better recording software will only offer more usage options, but not improve the sound.

Please "test drive" this page ...

It's looks good in Opera 7.54 (also identifying itself as Opera). The link info bullets also work fine. I generally prefer a page layout that is broader, to avoid vertical scrolling. On my 1024x768 screen here at work, there is a lot of empty space on the left and right side. But that's a matter of personal preference of course. -
Fantasy Jazz sold to Concord for $90 million

Should I run and buy all the Fantasy CDs now, as Steve Hoffman suggests? -
2004 Organissimo Holiday Music For You!
Claude replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
That's a great recording (also the sound quality and balance) and a special showcase of Joe's sensibility. If this is just a rehearsal, how good will the final recording be? -

Place your cursor on the download link, click on the right button of the mouse and then select "Save target as .." and choose a target folder on your hard drive. -
I think my system is high end and my ears are OK. What I hear on the "Love supreme" SACD (remastered by RVG) as compared to the previous 20Bit Impulse! CD and a 70's LP reissue, is that on the right channel treble has been boosted, in order to make the cymbals sound brighter. As a consequence, tape hiss is also louder on that channel. In my view, this sort of sound manipulation is completely unnecessary, but unfortunately that´s RVGs trademark, also on his Blue Note CD remasterings. The "Love Supreme" SACD sounds good, but I could do without this "tweaking".

What about the Rudy remaster sound on this SACD? Do the cymbals sound as trebly as on "A love supreme" and the Blue Note RVGs?

1. Sony and Philips own the patents (like they did with CD, whose patents have now expired). http://www.licensing.philips.com/licensees/conditions/sacd/ 2. Patents last 20 years (starting from the application date). The patents that cover SACD technology (pdf file) date from 1995-99. 3. I don't know if they are paying labels to release SACDs, but they did help small labels like Blue Note by doing the mastering work of some of their SACDs. 4. It seems they provided Fantasy with SACD mastering equipment. The mastering is done by Fantasy engineers. 5. I have no idea of the figures of SACD player sales, but some brands who had cheap CD/DVD players with SACD support have recently abandonned SACD support. This seems logical, as almost all new SACDs are hybrids (playable on all CD players) and SACD does not look like the mass market successor of the CD but more like a niche market for high end fans, who prefer more expensive players.

"definately" vs. "definitely"

This is an interesting threat -
There are way too many football (soccer) players in t hat list, so it's good none of them won

I listened to both the K2 CD and the SACD of Monk & coltrane and decided to keep the CD. My review on SA-CD.net: http://www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/1293

Berigan, you were supposed to kiss that frog, not flush it down the toilet ! -
I received the DVD today and I'm currently into the second track. The sound (stereo) is good, apart from a couple of sound balancing problems. The picture quality is excellent. The camerawork focuses (too much) on close-ups, but there is a lot of variation in the camera angles. The 70's clothing of the musicians is awful On the back of the DVD case, it says "Eagle is making these (Montreux) concerts available for the first time", so there should be more releases ahead. A reproduction of the 1975 festival poster in the booklet shows the names of Archie Shepp, Anthony Braxton, Andrew Hill, Bill Evans, Rahsaan Roland Kirk as well as mainstream and non-jazz stuff. Highly recommended (based on the first 20 minutes), especially as it is the only Mingus concert on DVD.

In Bavaria? I hope he didn't pass through Ottobeuren again

I am referring to the US K2 CD, which is mono except for the two bonus tracks.
-
I just got the K2 CD (mono), and compared it to the stereo tracks in the Complete Riverside box (the cheapo ZYX). The mono version sounds MUCH better than the stereo tapes, which are somehow experimental. Chuck explained in a another thread that the microphones used fro the stereo recording were suspended from the ceiling, while the mono recording used the classic microphone setup (close to the instruments). The odd spatial effect (phasing problems?) on the stereo tracks are detracting in my view. The mono version has much more punch and detail, because it is recorded more closely. For me who only knew this session from the stereo tapes, it is a true revelation.

There is 16 page discussion thread on the Steve Hoffman forum: Beatles box set coming Nov. 16
