I've heard of similar tricks used by police in the US (inviting people to pick up a prize), but to actually create a TV show is over the top http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england...ire/3717896.stm

This was only staged to prepare the public for a tearful reconciliation, and the announcement of a common film project, where Madonna plays Princess Diana and Elton does the soundtrack (8 different versions of "Candle in the wind")

Try to find a DVD with The sound of Miles Davis TV show from 1959. It is absolutely essential. It is available on 2 european DVDs, but I don't know about a US release. Then there is also the very entertaining Jazz on a summer's day, which is a documentary-fiction from the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival . But it does not contain complete performances, just short extracts from tunes. There is a site dedicated to Jazz on film: http://www.jazzonfilm.com Most of the films listed there never made it to DVD or even VHS, or the VHS is OOP. One of the ways get them is through filesharing networks, where many TV or VHS dubs are shared. This is illegal of course, it can take days to download a movie and the picture quality varies a lot.

The european Blue Note CD pressings have been copyprotected since June 2003. Apparently there were pressings in the UK that were not (or these were US imports)

Updates within versions (5.0 --> 5.5) are free, but upgrades to a later version (5.x --> 6.0) are not. If you have an earlier version, you get a cheaper upgrade price. If you don't need a retail version with CD-Rom and printed manual, you can just buy a serial number and unlock the 30 day trial download version, and save a few bucks. But the website is confusing, because they are offering different products for the US/Canada/Mexico and the rest of the world: https://secure.nero.com/en/secure.asp https://secure.nero.com/us/secure.asp

Here's an Allaboutjazz article on Horace Parlan, from october last year: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=670

According to jazzmatazz, the Cellar Door recordings will be released as three 2CD sets, and not as a complete box set with expensive packaging and a thick booklet. Just like the Black Hawk reissues. So they could release them in between the real box sets.
-
That doesn't work, just tried it by sending a PM to myself. Same thing with a semi-colon I don't understand this sentense in the Board help page: "If allowed, you may also be able to enter in multiple names in the box provided, will need to add one username per line."
-
Hey you spammers Have you tried entering multiple user names, each one seperated by a comma?
-
I prefer his early albums. I've heard "Pendulum" once, but I don't remember much about it
-
Could it be that you have installed a software that does this?

So, how are they? "Dance with death" especially, the most awaited Blue Note reissue of all times

Just a couple of infos related to US and european DVDs: - you need to check first if these DVDs are region-coded. It would be an abuse of the region system (meant to block access to euopean DVD users for films that are still shown in european cinemas), but unfortunately many old titles and music videos are also region-coded - self-burned DVD-Rs do not have a region code (it wouldn't make any sense) - almost all DVD players and TV sets currently available in Europe support the american NTSC standard, but the opposite (watching european PAL movies in the US) is not true - you can't simply copy commercial VHS tapes or DVDs by connecting a VHS or DVD recorder because the video on the original VHS/DVD contains the Macrovision copyprotection signal which makes the copy look completely blurred - for a european jazz movie fan, it is essential to have a region-free DVD player, because 80% of the titles are only available in the US and many of them are region-coded. Depending on the model, making a DVD player region-free can be done by the user himself or a store (usually costs 20 Euro) and is NOT illegal (unlike defeating Macrovision). I searched for "Cecil McBee" (with quotes) on Google and it came up with dozens of links related to the bassist and only two for the japanese store. www.cecilmcbee.net belongs to the store. www.cecil-mcbee.com is supposed to be bassist's homepage, but it's really awful. Here's some legal info on Cecil McBee's lawsuit (and a photo of a store): http://trademark.blog.us/blog/2004/10/01.html#a1398

I just discovered these future DVD releases on jazzmatazz: I'm looking forward to the "Power of Three" DVD. Was this previously released on VHS? The "Miles Davis - Isle of Wight" DVD, long announced but delayed many times, seems to have changed it's title to "Miles Davis - Miles Electric - A Different Kind Of Blue". Announced release date is November 8, 2004. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00009QNXN

Here's a promising free CD/DVD writing software: CDBurnerXP Pro It's interface and functions are inspired by Nero. I have installed it but not tried it yet. There will be a new Nero version (Nero 6 Reloaded) out this month, with some improvements and new features. The one I am awaiting most is a Verify function for audio CD-Rs. This was only available for data CDs/DVDs until now.

Flurin, I will record the Cecil Taylor broadcast today and possibly the one on 29th October (but I will be traveling that day and might miss it).

Some of them have recently closed. The FNAC (in the City 2 shopping centre at the north end of the Rue Neuve) is still the best CD store, with a large jazz selection and knowledgable staff. There is also a very good vinyl record store next to the Bourse, which gets most of his LPs from the US. Prices are rather high though. I go to Brussels almost weekly but rarely have the occasion to spend an evening there, so I don't know much about jazz clubs.

Yesterday, Sony announced that their future portable players would finally support MP3. This ends an odd situation where the Sony players would only play files compressed with ATRAC (invented for the Minidisc), making it necessary to convert music on the PC into that format before being able to play it on the portable player. So there may be some interesting new hardware ahead, from the inventor of the Walkman. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/09/23/sony_supports_mp3/

Thanks Flurin, I will record it too

Has anyone heard some of the new Chet remasters and can comment on the sound? The late 80's CDs don't sound very good, so there must be room for improvement. The name of the remastering engineer would already be useful information. Thanks

All recent european EMI jazz CDs have been copyprotected, so I guess the Chet titles will be too. They are currently on sale at CD Universe for $8.5, so you might order them there, it won't be very expensive (10-12 Euro/CD, depending on customs fees) and you are certain to get normal CDs.

I haven't seen them cheaper than 17 Euro in Europe.
