  1. It's from the same Hillcrest performances, but it's different material. The America material came out in the US on Inner City as Live at the Hillcrest Club 1958, credited to Coleman, but Bley put out other performances on his own Improvising Artists label as Coleman Classics 1. (There was never a volume 2.) I'm not even going to look, but I'll bet the one of the public-domain labels has a "Complete Hillcrest Club" CD. I also thought they were the same - oh well, there's another one for the ever lengthening 'wants list'. Thanks for posting the extract, Jeffcrom - made me laugh now playing - Bill Smith 'Pick a Number' [Onari] Learn something every day! I have to say that I like the cover on the America session more, but I'll keep an eye out for "Coleman Classics 1." It would be great to play them back to back and see how the session(s) shape up).

  3. Great story! This is the version I have, which I think is the same as the "Coleman Classics 1" (which I have not seen previously). On the America label. Performed at the Hillcrest Club, Los Angeles, 1958.
  4. There are occasions where a photo is listed but for some reason (publisher, editor, author oversight) the photo is not actually inserted. I suppose comparison with other copies will tell the tale. Especially in a big book like this. BTW, the book is now available in paperback for under $60. Time to pull the trigger? Or is this one of those books that need to be in hardcover?
  5. Was reading the thread here on the board about the new BN LT CD reissues (already seemed to have disappeared from the usual sources) and thought I'd give one of the original LPs from that series a spin. I think I have most of them but would be curious to compare one of the CD reissues to the LP. This one has fluff-less liner notes from our own Larry Kart. Jackie McLean - CONSEQUENCE
  6. I'm so sorry. My sincere condolences.

  9. Back cover: Dudu Pukwana, Chris McGregor, Louis Moholo, Johnny Dyani, in memory of Mongezi Feza. Wonderful double album on Ogun.

  11. There's still some wriggle room there But it's not cheap either. Crown Point may be the next cool place.

  13. I wonder exactly where the store will be located. Academy was supposed to move its warehouse store from Williamsburg to nearby Greenpoint (maybe already has). This photo looks like the Academy storefront refurbished and made over: Right now, Williamsburg is at the height of hipness. That probably means that in 2 or 3 years, the hipsters will have moved on to Greenpoint or Crown Point or beyond. Anyway, I'm likely to check it out next time I'm in Brooklyn.

  16. If you like someone who can cover more "out" territory, as well as mainstream, you might give Fay Victor a try. Also, has anyone mentioned Betty Carter?

  18. It's a great set, one of the reference recordings of the Beethoven string quartets. It's been OOP for ages; this one could be either a reissue or one of those CD-R reprints. I'd check with the seller before buying. I guess this is a new naive reissue box set, part of their low-price series. It's available at European amazons pretty cheap as well: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beethoven-Complete-String-Quartets-set/dp/B0000DET84/ Apparently this set was selling for big prices on the 2nd hand market until this reissue, which appears to be standard CD. Interestingly, Amazon US does not appear to carry it, so maybe Arkiv has a scoop. In terms of dollars to discs, it is not an amazing bargain, but compared to reseller prices, it looks pretty good. Right now I have the complete Beethoven String Quartets only in 3 LP box sets issued years ago by Quartetto Italiano, which I think has been well-regarded. On CD I have the Middle Quartets (only) by The Fine Arts Quartet on Everest, and some of the Quartets performed by the Budapest String Quartet on Columbia, reissues of 1940s mono recordings. I could probably use one or two reference sets.
  19. Saw this on Arkiv Music. Bargain? Any good? BEETHOVEN: COMPLETE STRING QUARTETS. Quatuor Vegh, 8 CDs. $39.99 http://www.arkivmusic.com/albumpage/29857-E1205

  21. I saw Ban and Maneri with Evan Parker at the Parker residency at The Stone in NYC in September. Very fine trio performance. Great show. Next time we should say hello Absolutely! I went to all the sets during the week, so we probably rubbed shoulders at some point. Too bad we didn't get a chance to talk.
  22. Hearing Braxton on contrabass clarinet is an awesome experience. Braxton and Teitelbaum teamed up again on "Open Aspects '82" on hat Hut (2LP). Teitelbaum's performance there really impressed me.
  23. I saw Ban and Maneri with Evan Parker at the Parker residency at The Stone in NYC in September. Very fine trio performance.
