  1. I don't think JL was a source for Squidco or DMG (especially DMG, which has long-established supply lines to most labels). JL and Squidco might (or might not) share common distributors on some product. JL would sometimes have items that Squidco would not have, and vice versa. My take is that with JL gone, Squidco and DMG stand a better chance of surviving, and yes, they may be able to acquire additional supply liners that JL had locked up.

  3. I got mine and was also a bit surprised. But it got me thinking about the Clifford Jordan box so it is now on my wish list for Christmas.

  5. Yes, bad to see sources for music go under, but JL stopped being one of my sources quite some time ago (for reasons I'll not go into). I should think this will prop up Squidco, DMG, and other online sellers a bit, which would be the upside.

  7. Not sure a lot of Americans would do much better (excluding that first map-that was bad!). There ere some interesting consistencies. I think they all got Texas right, California and the West Coast generally too. The Carolinas fared well too. NE and Midwest, not so much.

  13. I dawdled on that one and missed it, to my continuing regret. Chico really set his own course. Always hip without being merely fashionable.

  15. Even though he is not a liner note writer per se, and even though he has a direct interest in the record discussed, I still very much enjoy Martin Davidson's liner notes for the Emanem discs The history is interesting, the evaluation is fair (but then I am a fan so maybe predisposed to agreement), and the style is lucid. Always happy to come across anything Michael Cuscuna wrote.
  16. The internal architecture of the LP is so ingrained that some groups like to mess with our heads and not mark Side A and Side B. Most recently this occurred with an LP I was playing FORWARDS AND BACKWARDS, Frode Gjerstad, Johnny Dyani, John Stevens, on Impetus. I found myself flipping the LP over a couple of times looking for the side markings -kind of like the title of the album. Then you just say, fuck it, pick a side and go with it I assume the point of such an exercise, if not to needle the customer a bit, is to break the listener from safe mooring posts and make them experience the music without known markings and directional indicators. Free listening so to speak.

  20. I knew about the $35 min for free shipping, but I did not know about the sales tax for Virginia residents. As a consumer looking for the best deal, that's a bummer. However, I'm sure that retail merchants here in Virginia are pretty happy about that, because that will help level the playing field between brick and mortar stores and online sellers. Previously, buying locally amounted to paying a 4% (or more depending on where you are) penalty on each purchase.

  23. Larry, I used to live in the Chicagoland area, not far from where you are presently located. The area is great for estate sales, book sales, garage sales, etc. At the time I was pretty heavily into used and rare books and I put in a good deal of time at these sales. It can become quite an addiction, reinforced when one makes a great "score." I still find them hard to resist Thanks for mentioning the Gambit CD and for the additional information. I was always a little uncertain about that performance, so today I learned a lot.
