  1. For Roswell Rudd: INSIDE JOB. Arista Freedom. Rudd, with Dave Burrell, Enrico Rava, Stafford James, Harold White.
  2. Sonny Rollins: "NEWARK'S TIME" Three Sounds; "BOTTOMS UP!" (yeah, not changing that one!) Kenny Burrell: "BAD VIEW AT THE FIVE SPOT" Jackie McLean: "SWIG, SWAG, SINGIN'!"
  3. Maynard G. Krebs Maynard Ferguson Fergie
  4. I last saw Rudd at the most recent Vision Festival. He was playing with Milford Graves, and he was truly awesome. He has been a part of many landmark albums and has been an influential figure in modern jazz. Sad news. Wish him well.
  5. @MJAZZG: That Horn looks sweet.
  6. Horace SIlver and Art Blakey: "SUBARU" Paul Chambers: "WHIFFS OF CHAMBERS" Curtis Fuller: "BOTTLE OPENER" Sonny Clark: "DIAL S FOR SUNNY, C FOR CLARK" Johnny Griffin: "THE CONGREGATIONALISTS" Horace Silver: "FURTHER EXPLOITATIONS"
  7. I got the same response from Jack Massarik, jazz correspondent of the London Evening Standard. Either Cook's thinking evolved, or Eric's playing did. Or both. Nothing wrong with that. It should happen more often. Their 3 star ratings in the 4th were not bad, although the comments were somewhat dispiriting and so it's a little surprising that Cook came that far along.

  10. It is interesting to speculate on which jazz musicians have made serious money int he business, but I find it even more interesting to think about the many more who somehow seem to scrape along, seemingly living hand to mouth for years. I've gone to plenty of free jazz shows where there might be 10 people in the audience, often less, and I think, "How can anyone live on this kind of money?" Especially in a place like NYC, which is dearly expensive. Maybe supportive families or spouses? One thing the "business" seems to provide though is extensive travel. The same musician playing to 10 people in Brooklyn next week might be playing to 10 people in Latvia. The economics of all this are not very transparent.
  11. Holy cow! The resellers on Amazon are asking some crazy prices. I've had some luck picking up older editions as garage sales and second-hand bookshops. No Kindle edition yet.
  12. Cookie Monster Mrs. Fields Annie Sprinkle
  13. Thanks! I ran a search here but of course failed to turn it up . I'd love to have the box but that price is the hurdle. Ditto the Cecil album. If NYAQ was $75 cheaper I would have bought it already, but this seems like jumping the shark. Anyway, not absolutely closing the door. Now playing:
  14. Back to East Coast. New York Art Quartet. Get Back LP. I would love to have their MOHAWK LP on Fontana. Has anyone had a chance to check out the Triplepoint 5LP box of the NYAQ? Or better, does anyone own it?
  15. All the reviews were 3 stars in the 4th edition, and the comments suggest they did not see Alexander getting any more interesting, e.g. "not a world-beater...no advance," etc. They may have just stopped listening to him and then deleted the entry altogether, figuring they already said what they had to say about him.
  16. More West Coast:
  17. I have the 4th edition handy, and Eric ALexander does have a leader listing, with about 7 albums listed.
  18. Just about everybody in West Coast Jazz is on this one: Discovery LP.
  19. Manfred Schoof Quintet, SCALES. ECM. A bit too ECM-ish, or I'd give it high marks. Michel Pilz plays a nice bass clarinet.
  20. I have "African Portraits," and I think you are quite right about Ibrahim's ability to get deep in his playing. "Ruminating feel" is a good way to put it. In his solo performances, he can reach a powerful depth of feeling. Not always, but often enough to make you come back for more.
  21. Hugh Downs Al Downing Downton (as in Abbey)
  22. Ling Ling Lang Lang Sing Sing
