  1. It was Art Pepper that got me interested in jazz. I recall a wonderful performance by Art a year or two before he died that galvanized my interest. So I am always on the lookout for Art albums. Despite that interest, I've never come across the albums that make up the "Hollywood Sessions" box set - until recently. The most recent pair to fall into my hands are: Bill Watrous Quintet: Watrous, Pepper, Russ Freeman, Bob Magnason, Carl Burnett. FUNK 'N FUN. Yupiteru Jazz Label. My copy even has the big, honkin' gold OBI, "Yupiteru 4 Beat Jazz Best Selection." Great vinyl. The back cover has a priceless picture of the band. Have never seen the Watrous or this label before, which probably doesn't mean much. The other album: "Jack Sheldon & his West Coast Friends." ANGEL WINGS." Sheldon, Pepper, Milcho Leviev, Tony Dumas, Carl Burnette. Atlas LP. Dusty Groove has this for a very reasonable price at the moment. A nice piece of vinyl.
  2. Homefromtheforest might want to chime in on this, being the bigger JAPO/OM fan. I have "Kirikuki" (1976) and "Rautionaha" (1977) on JAPO vinyl. I really rate them equally. I'm told by credible folks that the album with Don Um Romao ("OM- with Dom Um Romao" 1977) is the best of the lot. I could swear that at one time I had this LP but if so, have no idea where it is. It was also released as an ECM album, as well as on JAPO. Hope this helps. .
  3. Economical operation (while still BN), deeper pockets (Liberty/UA) when BN faltered; strong back catalog. All these were mentioned, and I think are valid. But I was wondering if the introduction of the CD format might have helped BN survive even if nothing more than as an emblem? The CD allowed all that BN back catalog to be reintroduced in CD form and become a cash cow. Then SACD. Then LP again. Downloads. Etc. Etc.

  5. I love all the OM records on Japo! Fantastic stuff. The semi-recent OM cd on Intakt is good too especially if you prefer the more avant/free improv stuff. Just finished playing: Cosmic Eye "Dream Sequence" (roundtable, Australia)...a quality reissue! super quiet vinyl pressing..sounds superb. Currently: Stockhausen "From the Seven Days" 7LP box (DG, Germany) Just record 1... Do you mean this one? Good call. I do have it. If you are looking for other Leimgruber, I love the hat Art albums, but they are hard to find. The recently released "Pancake Tour" with Roger Turner on Relative Pitch Records is a good one.
  6. Savonarola Henry Rollins Rolling Stones
  7. EGYPT STRUT - SUN RA ARKESTRA AND SALAH RAGAB. Russian Federation Vinyl Lovers, which is associated with, or the same as Lilith Records, which has a licensing agreement with Leo Records, etc, etc. I have no idea what the source is for this album (likely CD, or maybe a gussied up needle drop), and I doubt V. Putin knows either. Seen a lot of chatter in various forums but nobody has really pinned it down. I will say that the vinyl is dead quiet and the packaging is first rate. The sound is sufficiently good not to get in the way of the music. I'm usually not optimistic anyway when it comes to SQ with Sun Ra.
  8. Re: CONTRASTS - I have the LP, but if the CD has extra material or knock-your-socks-off remastering, I'll get that too, otherwise will pass. I'm a bit of a Urs Leimgruber nut. I prefer his later, avant/free jazz playing, but the OM stuff is interesting too.

  11. Exultation! Booker Ervin, Prestige. Recorded 1963. With Frank Strozier, Horace Parlan, Butch Warren, and Walter Perkins. A little more than 40 years on from this record date, Perkins would make a duo album with Peter Brotzmann, certainly an interesting conjunction. Butch Warren died recently here in Washington DC.

  14. Picked this up on RSD: Sonny Fortune's first individual leader date, on Strata-East, "Long Before Our Mothers Cried." Record and cover in very nice condition. Sonny includes a very nice dedication to his Mom on the back cover. How many jazz records do you find with that? (Might be a topic for a thread, LOL).

  16. Arkiv Music has the Musique d'Abord Series on sale for $5.99 each. http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/listPage.jsp?list_id=1318&page_size=100&site_id=E1210 I have had a few titles from the series and was thinking of adding some more. Looking for thoughts on this series generally or recommendations for particular titles.

  18. Base Records LP. I think the word "fiery" is required to be used with this album.
  19. First listen says it's very good ... I'm being treated the same as all other non-EU countries there, btw. Makes sense to combine a few things (but then over here, there's always them custom crapperies). Now, the third and last of this order (still waiting for a much larger CD order, might have been caught by customs, but I sure do hope not!) "Kampen", by Bobby Bradford, Frode Gjerstand, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love Have both of these. Haven't had a chance to listen to them more than once yet, but I liked them. Maybe 4 out of 5 stars each. If you are getting LPs from NoBusiness, try the 2 by Liudas Mockunas, especially the first one, which is killer. The one with Guy is also strong. I saw Tchicai and Fewell in concert a few years back. Very good show.

  21. I read this a few months back. Some parts are really interesting, and some just drag... I can see that, This is my second time through it, the last being quite some number of years ago. I find Tolstoy engrossing, but in 800 pages, there are going to be some longueurs, I suppose. I found it tougher going the first time. Also, I think having read War and Peace just before this, I feel more immersed in Tolstoy's authorial world.
  22. Lou Dobbs Dobie Gillis Gil Evans

  24. Still on my Tolstoy kick: In the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation.
  25. Braxton is mightily impressive on this one. Chick does his part. On Picaddilly LP.
