  4. My last experience with Amazon pre-order (the Miles Bootleg) was less than edifying (I'm not Prime, Choice, Gold, Platinum, or whatever, so had to wait way too long for the order). Just placed my order with Dusty Groove.

  7. It sounds like ersatz Ken Burns (is that even possible?) You know, a group of talking heads, the producer moving from one to the other, each chipping in a nice, easy bit of praise or personal tidbit. Take it as a compliment that they did not use your contribution.

  13. Lafayette is playing a bunch of dates in Baltimore in the next couple of months, so maybe I will give it another shot. Not surprised about Darius; the guy is tearing it up lately. Glad you dug the gig.

  16. How is that, Leeway? I enjoy Halvorsen's Firehouse and Cracklejob - does this compare? Quite an investment with UK shipment I liked it quite a bit The interplay is quite good. The focus is on Halvorson really. In "Crackleknob," which I really love, the focus is divided with the wonderful Nate Woolley. Beautifully balanced effort but maybe more Nate's album than Mary's In "Saturn Sings," the addition of sax and trumpet gives a different flavor to things than in "Fever Dream." In "Fever Dream," the guitar is the center of the music. The sound is really excellent on the LPs. Quality vinyl and packaging. Note that it is a double LP set but there are only 3 sides. One other thing: some of the production was done in wild multi-colored vinyl, and some in regular black vinyl. Depending on what you want, you might check first before ordering. I guess you'll have to decide if worth the cost. But if you like Mary's work, I doubt you will be disappointed.
  17. Gilchrist plays a lot in the Baltimore area, which is relatively close to me. I've seen him a few times, and, frankly, did not much care for him. His "in" plying makes me head for the exit. Formanek is fine, although a little earthbound for me. Depends on the context in which he plays. For instance, I like him more when he plays with his old pal Tim Berne. I've started to really dig Darius Jones, especially when he lets it rip. I didn't care too much for "Mannish Boy," but since then he has started to really come on. Anyway, glad you like the show. I like Bernard, Lafayette's manager, so maybe I'll give him another try.

  20. In an interview with Tim Berne, who was a student of Hemphill, by Duncan Heining, Berne had this to say about influence: It's been suggested that Ornette was quite an influence of Hemphill's music but Berne dismisses this. "If they're from Texas and knew Ornette and they're not playing chord changes, then they're going to say he sounds like Ornette. His first influences were really Charlie Parker, Lee Konitz—he had a band that used to play Gerry Mulligan arrangements—and he was totally into Cannonball."
