  2. The cups/mugs in 477 really look like coffee mugs rather than cocktail glasses as you would expect from the surroundings. SO I'm going with coffee cups:
  3. It may have been that the example of Coltrane gave Art "permission" to open up his playing in a way that was not possible for the early Art, but was sorely needed later to express what was going on in his life.

  9. I like a lot of post-comeback/jail/addiction Pepper (although the addiction issues probably never quite went away). I do dig "The Trip" and "Living Legend." I recall one album (on Fresh Sound?) of a San Francisco gig, where Pepper clearly is trying to imitate Coltrane; not good. While "The Trip" does have at least one extended cut, it is much more Pepper than Coltrane. What I like about the later Pepper is the candor and deep feeling. He is invested in the music in a way I don't think he was earlier in the career. Of course, the early work has its own virtues.

  15. I don't know the whole of the Bridge catalog, but I think their Elliot Carter series and George Crumb series (still making up my mind on Crumb) are important contributions. I've also been recently attracted to the music of Poul Ruders, a Danish composer. Heard an interview with Ruders, with a fair sampling of his music, on a NJ public radio channel, and I found both the composer and his music tart, challenging and intelligent. Bridge has a Ruders series of course. Who else would venture on that?

  17. I'm with Medjuck on this. I consider myself a pretty strong Art Pepper fan. Art's music got me into jazz. But I think the Hollywood Sessions are among his weaker efforts. IIRC, they were made for the Japanese mainstream market, and the resulting music is a bit tame overall, a bit too laid-back. As with all of Art's music, there are moments of passion and lyric beauty, but the general character of the box set is pleasant, mellow music. Not bad mind you, just not Art's best.
  18. Thanks for the account of your concert going. I can sympathize with your travails in getting to The Stone. Been in many a NYC jam-up. I try to be in the City by 4P on concert days whenever possible. Find a spout, grab a pizza (lol), and beer. Get in concert mode. Disturbances outside The Stone are routine on Ave A.
