  2. Kobe is not going to risk an $83.7 million contract for $700,000 a game. Something happens to him, the Lakers will cut him loose faster than a speeding bullet (or something). Another point: the numbers are indeed totally insane. But they are only a reflection of the decayed culture in which we live, where sports and celebrity are the obsession of most of the public. Just a guess, but I would not be surprised that people who would not pay an extra $100 a year for their local schools think nothing of paying out $300 for basketball or hockey or football seats on a regular basis. Bread and circuses.

  6. I suspect Bailey and Stevens were reacting against the tradition mapped out in 'Electric Eden'. But there's room in these isles for all manner of traditions. Oh, I see what the list was about. I was thrown off by the Black Sabbath reference, but on closer reading I see that Sabbath was itself thrown off. But as you said:

Thanks. It probably is the same performance, although INGO of course provides only the sketchiest details (operating in that manner requires, let us say, a certain amount of reticence Am listening to the Monk LP now. Not as bad as I feared. Some drop-outs, some (OK a bit more than some in spots) distortion, but otherwise decent enough. BTW, it's a good performance.

  18. Hated math in school. Got queasy just reading Hardbopjazz's question. Yet I still scored much better on the SAT (1970 version!) than the current average. Current situation not encouraging, but that's material for another thread probably.

Hi, thanks for the replies. I was busy at work, then went to Baltimore for the High Zero Festival. Anyway, I ended up picking up: "Thelonius Monk Quartet, 1961 European Tour, Vol. 1" Mostly out of curiosity really. The quartet is Monk, Rouse, Dunlop, and Ore (if the album credits can be relied upon). The recording is supposed to be Bern, May 10, 1961. I don't know if this performance (again, if date/location is accurate) has been issued elsewhere. Anyone know? I have not had a chance to listen to it yet. The cover is like the one King Ubu posted except the cover color is blue. I would like to find the "Love Supreme Live" INGO LP, as well as the Cecil.
  20. Went to the first night of the High Zero Festival last night. A great evening of improv and avant music. If you're in the area, consider attending.
  21. Not a fan really, but when one of their songs came on the rock/pop channel in the car, I did not switch stations. Also, Michael Stipe had the sort of weirdness that makes rock fun.
