  8. Winging its way from England (or maybe occupying steerage in a freighter) is my birthday present. I've heard the pros and cons but really wanted this set. $251, shipping included, so I consider it a bargain (99 CDs).

  10. I went t to the Caveau de la Huchette 10 years ago and had a similar experience--people danced! I was rather amazed; hardly ever see that at US jazz clubs. A fun atmosphere. Of course, the music was mostly swing to bop, nothing adventurous or cutting edge. I also recall some musicians from the audience getting up on stage and joining in for a song or two.

  12. Amazon has it listed for $83.26, with a release date of October 11 in the U.S.. Not a bad price for a 20 CD box, but I think the price will come down quite a bit once the product hits the market and the resellers get into the act; at least I hope so. There are a few other titles in the Icon series. They generally get good but not glowing reviews. Nevertheless, if this box get down to about $2.00 per disc, I might go for it. I've always respected Steinberg's work. There was a sense of honesty and sincerity about it, and he was very good indeed in the Germanic repertoire.

  21. The only way this thread has any meaning, and is not mere gossip-mongering, is if there i an artistic theory that that ties homosexuality to art in a way that defines that art. In other words, what does the homosexuality of a person have to do with the art he or she created? In some artists, there might be a case to be made (I'm waiting to hear it). Is there some over-arching theory of homosexuality that will tie the music of Benjamin Britten to that of Ben Webster? And why stop at homosexuality? I'm sure that there are heterosexual artists who have/had some astonishing kinks. Do we need to know them to understand their art?
  22. The last track, "Virgin Jungle," with Sam Woodyard joining Oliver Johnson on drums, is a lot of fun.
  23. That's a great one. Cool!
