  1. I just signed up. That $29.47 price is irresistible. Plus free shipping. Yes.
  2. Prince Henry Hal Hal 9000
  3. This thread might be better in the Classical Discussion section. Anyway, for a single recording, this will work well. The CD goes for about $10 on Amazon.
  4. In principle I agree with you. And instinctively I'm going to side with the musicians. However, there are a couple of possibilities here not mentioned. 1) the owner's son might have thought he was acting in his own self-defense, There is such a thing as "fighting words." 2) more likely, the owner's son might have thought that his mom (the owner) was either being threatened or disrespected. If someone is disrespecting my mom I'm going after them; very simple. Still, like I said, bad all around. The owners lose musicians, musicians lose a venue. Let's see what plays out.
  5. Maggie & Jiggs Mrs. Wiggs The Three Little Pigs Francis Bacon Lettice Leefe Chappie D'Amato Cus D'Amato Floyd Patterson Pink Floyd
  6. Charlie Patton Charlie McCarthy Charlie Chan
  7. I don't know if it is "pay $50 and whatever you get from the door you keep" or "You didn't draw enough, so you have to pay $50 to the house for its costs." Either way, it ended badly. I remember reading something about Dizzy; he always carried a knife, and sometimes used it to defend himself and his interests. People didn't mess with him. There was something in the thread on Charlie Parker in Chicago earlier today along the same lines, i.e., getting ripped off by a club owner. Some enduring traditions in jazz
  8. This is a very interesting interview and performance from the Norwegian-Australian trio, MURAL, who performed at the Rothko Chapel. They performed their own music, not Feldman's, but it's interesting to pick up on the Feldman influences that are clearly in their music (perhaps not even consciously). I like their music. They also talk about how it felt to perform in the Rothko Chapel, how they felt a large responsibility to add to the heritage of the space, and not just offer a performance. I'm not sure what the Devo-like headgear is all about; maybe there is a sonic aspect--or not. Anyway, worth checking out I think. MURAL at Rothko Chapel P.S. Wanted to add that I just ordered the String Quartet (Naxos).
  9. Yes indeed. He performed a lot with Roscoe in the Sound Ensembles. I was curious to see what he was like leading his own group. Obviously, he gets to bring his guitar to the foreground, but some of Roscoe's influence remains in the music. This was my first listen, but it will get more.
  10. I see no reason to avoid names at this point, since this has gone public. From Tom Blancarte's blog: From Tom Blancarte - "to all musicians in NYC who might be playing at University of the Streets in the East Village:" "I just played there with Talibam!, Tim Dahl and Moppa Elliot, and when we were finished, the owner and her son told us that we owed them 50 dollars. When we told them we didn't owe them anything, her son punched my friend Kevin in the face with keys in his hand! He came close to losing his left eye! Please boycott this place, they are bad, bad people." Who knows, there may be more to the story. Still, this violence is troubling. University of the Streets has given a venue to many Downtown and visiting free jazz musicians in New York City. A "lose-lose" situation for all involved. .
  11. Barefield here too. Roscoe Mitchell Quartet: Roscoe, Barefield, Muhal Richard Abrams, George Lewis. Sackville LP, from 1975 concert.
  12. Hugh Laurie Dr. John Professor Longhair Professor Irwin Corey Erwin Rommel George S. Patton
  13. The information I got is that a friend of the band was punched by the owner's son, not one of the band members. This is from a blog post by one of the band members. It was over the $50, pay-to-play clause (if there was one). The musicians involved are pretty well-known, at least in the free jazz community. Trying to play this music is a hard way to make a living.
  14. I had never seen this album before spotting it last week in a local dealer's shelves---for a very low price (it's in mint condition). It's from 1987, and I'm always leery of 1980s jazz (another thread for that). But this one is quite good:
  15. Barney the Dinosaur Barneys New York (hip clothier) Barnard College
  16. Whoops! Almost read that as "undeserved". They get more than enough support as it is. By "they" do you mean the musicians? I hope not.
  17. Mungo Park Robert Luongo Fonz
  18. More rock (or pop) and roll: Christine McVie (spelling?) from Fleetwood Mac
  19. That's why I said Holy Crap. Yes, it is indeed Grace Slick. Bu in her prime, pure rock and roll!
  20. If I may, let me throw one in:
  21. They sound pretty good. I'd say there are Japanese issues that sound better when I've been able to compare, and these seem to sound better than the 20 bit US digipak versions I've compared. They're a bit on the loud side, but not as badly as a lot of rock releases. Thanks, good to know.
  22. I'm with you on the Dolphy album above! A young John Lindberg is part of the Trio.
  23. Absolutely! (But this ends all dreams of a Brown Mosaic Select, I guess...wasn't really an option I assume, but I still kept hoping against all odds...) Another here for the Marion Brown. I have them both on LP, but I will be glad to have them on CD as well. Anyone have any clue of the sound quality on this series?
