Jeez, "behind the barn" seems appropriate for that kind of "thinking," with all due RESPECT, of course. Sorry if you didn't get any today, or have a tin ear, but I like listening to Hendrix and two jillion versions of "My Favorite Things," plus a lot of other stuff from that wide world of music past and contemporary, swing, straight-up, and free. But you'll have to explain how you listen to the music of the future, which by definition hasn't happened yet. On second thought, don't bother.

That BBC set really looks tasty. I had the original 2-CD BBC Sessions but my daughters appropriated it. I never saw it again Good excuse for jumping on the reissue. I'm still on the fence on the 66-70 box set.

Not a great find maybe, but pretty good for a dollar, at a local thrift shop. Mint LP, Japanese pressing with OBI strip and in plastic sleeve. (The picture shows the Japanese CD version, but you get the idea). How did such a nice LP get to the thrift shop, among the dreck and dross?

New Jimi Hendrix Box Set: A 6CD Limited Numbered Edition of 1000 units includes the complete Paris 1966 and all circulating songs from Paris 1967. Also contains: Various European live radio & tv appearances from 1967, best of the German concerts from 1969, Arhus 1970 and last official concert 1970. In total 6 CDs - 85 Tracks & an 8 Page booklet, nearly 7 hours playing time (six hours 55 mins). Has anyone had a chance to hear this box set? or at least some of the material included in the box? There are so many bad Jimi bootlegs out there. Hoping this might be something better.

About 30 minutes into this CD (Track 1), Evan Parker unleashes a monster, jaw dropping sax solo that has to be heard to be believed. Even for Parker, this is a knock-out.

I'll take Priester and Fuji if available.

Hard to say if it was the best, but "Joshua" on Bobby Hutcherson's "Spiral" Blue Note LP blew me away. With Freddie Hubbard (tp); Sam Rivers (ts); Bobby Hutcherson (vib); Andrew Hill (p); Richard Davis (b); Joe Chambers (d), how could it not?!

Album Cover Photos Taken From The Wrong Side

Oliver Nelson, Lou Donaldson: "BACK TALK". I'll leave it to your discretion as to whether this is the wrong side or not: -
Fortunately got mine when it was first issued, an exception to my usual mode of procrastinating and vacillating until too late. I've been operating on the principle lately that if a major artist (and, make no mistake, Bill Dixon is securely in that category) puts out a new musical statement, grab it, especially on vinyl, even if the naysayers are taking shots. In time, it will reward.

Sorry, really have to disagree with you on your Stones comment, even though I have liked Spencer Davis and, more particularly, Stevie Winwood from the start. The Stones have always had a hard-core of consistency and coherence. I have never doubted that they are entirely convincing in what they did (and, although much diminished, still do). As a teen in the 60s, there was no group more convincing to me and my cohort, than The Stones. It seems to me they were and are the template for hard-core rock and roll.

I would love to get my hands on a copy!

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
Leeway replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Every time I dip back into Miles I find something compelling and satisfying. I'm digging this set more, with each listen. -
Anyone check out Virginia Genta? Free jazz flamethrower: http://www.virginiag...altervista.org/

Cecil Taylor "2 Ts..." box at a great price on UK Amazon
Leeway replied to alppila's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I took the plunge and bought it. That was the most reasonable price I had seen in a while. The $2.98 shipping charge seems to have bought me the very slowest form of delivery however, as the order has already shipped but estimated arrival date is September 27! Anyway, looking forward to this addition to my Cecil collection. I've heard some of the material and I know it is great stuff. BTW, CT is appearing in DC in November, oddly enough, at the French Embassy. Got my ticket -
I love Marion Brown. I was listening to this recently. Uncategorizable, deeply imagined, and totally cool: Discogs says there was a Japanese CD issue, but I've never seen it. It really should be reissued. In fact, maybe someone could do a Marion Brown box set (Mosaic? )

Ultimate Miles Davis Box Set or Over the Top?
Leeway replied to Leeway's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Good article here by Mike Zwerin on Miles' painting: http://www.cultureki...s/rhemile16.htm For those who want to see for themselves: http://www.amazon.co...82269749&sr=1-1 -
HOXHA: Dylan van der Schyff, drums; Paul Rutherford, trombone; Ken Vandermark, tenor sax, clarinet; Torsten Muller, bass. Recorded live in Portland, Oregon, December 12, 2004. SPool Records CD. I'm a huge Vandermark fan, and this looked like an interesting situation for him. Plus the other musicians are all first-rate.

John Carter, Don Byron, Louis Sclavis for thie dedication to the instrument. Also Lori Freedman, a terrific clarinetist from the Montreal improv scene. Check her out on You Tube and My Space. She's an outcat so don't expect Benny or Artie. Me? I love it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxYcoARPqL0

Yes, good point about Jaap. In retrospect, this album is failry important from a number of perspectives, particularly the development of European free jazz, the Dutch jazz scene, and American-European collaboration. Too bad Noah's recent stuff does not come close; mostly in a fusion, smooth jazz mode. But the early stuff is killer.

One of the more exciting LPs I've listened to recently: Noah Howard: PATTERNS. On AltSax Records. Reportedlyhard to get (and/or expensive) on vinyl (I scored a copy in NYC at a somewhat reasonable price), but out on CD (if you must). With Misha Mengelberg (misidentified on the LP as "Mendelberg") and Han Bennink. Misha gets some good licks in, but it is Bennink who excites, as he unleashes a furious assault on the drumkit, while Noah wails aways in best "fire music" style.

http://www.sonymusicdigital.com/miles-davis/details/5506623?gclid=CN3Zvr3_waMCFRCenAod4EQ5Zw Sony Legacy is listing a forthcoming new "Trumpet Case" edition of Miles Davis box sets: all the metal spine box sets, plus some additional gew gaws (trumpet reed T-Short, a Miles lithograph, etc). Is this the ultimate Miles set, or a massive case of "jumping the shark"? I'm not sure who would shell out over $1,000 for this set. Serious collectors already have most or all of these boxes, and newcomers would seem unlikely to take the plunge. OTOH, it does look way cool! Anyone going for it?

News reports state that photographer Herman Leonard passed away on August 14th. He created many memorable jazz images, and, one might say that he helped defined the image of jazz in the public mind. His 1948 photograph of the young Dexter Gordon (with the cigarette smoke swirling upwards) is surely iconic.

This is one ECM forthcoming issue that caught my attention: Tim Berne on ECM! Rather surprising, really. With a fine group: Formanek (actually his album), Taborn, Cleaver (a terrific, underrated drummer).

I think it was only out in Japan briefly a few years ago. A curiosity for lovers of Larks era Crim!!! I managed to pick the LP up recently for a nice price (cheap). Usually see it on EBAY for $30-60. Should really be reissued on CD. What a lineup, what with Derek Bailey and Evan Parker.

Kevin, do they have BNs okay? And do you happen to know what the source material is? Thanks.
