I totally dig Cecil but something about this effort just does not sit right with me (the huge sums requested for donations and ticket prices might be part of it ]. Even granting the best of intentions, the effort seems hopelessly naive in terms of what it takes to establish, curate, and maintain a museum. Can be done, but this effort seems to fall well short of that in the reality department. Some of the names on the organizing list do not reassure me either. Why not incorporate Cecil's memorabilia and artifacts in an existing museum? Cecil's physical place just does not seem central to his role in modern music; if anything, he seems more an international figure than one grounded in a local tradition.

Wayne Shorter: Complete Columbia Albums Collection
Leeway replied to crisp's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
It looks like they culled out the Shorter compositions from various Weather Report albums (note the generic covers for those items) and added them to the albums issued under Shorter's name (which are the actual album covers). I don't find much of this to be of any interest or substance. -

Stereo Jack's In Cambridge, MA not closing!
Leeway replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Landlords are a strange breed. They'll drive out a long-established customer in the hope of yet greater profit. All too often their greed gets them nowhere and the storefront ends up sitting empty for months. It's all about the MONEY, to hell with the community. -
What live music are you going to see tonight?
Leeway replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Heading up to Noo Yawk City Monday to check out the Ingrid Laubrock/ Tom Rainey and Catherine Sikora/ Ziv Ravitz shows. Laubrock is the real thing and Sikora has immense promise. -
Suggest one, motherfucker. Signor, hombre, caballero, gentilhomme to name a few I recall the Monk blindfold test: Oscar Peterson. Easy Listenin' Blues from 'With Respect to Nat' (With Herb Ellis and Ray Brown.) TM: Which is the way to the toilet? (Waits to end of record, leaves room, returns . . laughs.) Well, you see where I went. (To Mrs.Monk) Could you detect the piano player?

That's good to read, but it's not a true review, more of a promo blurb. Isn't everything in Jazz Times? Looks like Sony's promo sheet--which is useful anyway.

People who don't really like jazz tend to like Oscar: he's flashy, there's a lot of razzle-dazzle (too many notes), what he does and plays is easy to understand. None of that esoteric, spacey, strident stuff, with no beat. Hell, you can tap your toe to OP! It was a formula that brought him a lot of commercial success, the kind of commercial success that tends to squeeze out artistic development (I doubt OP cared about that anyway). You spend 40 years pumping out the same stuff in the same way. I daresay that there is not a heck of a lot of difference between early and late OP. Let me add that there are a lot of jazz-ers who like OP and find music that resonates with them and that's fine.

Are those the ones in brown-ish tan boxes with an illustration of the musician (i.e., not a photo but a sort of color drawing)? They are about half the thickness of the Time-Life boxes, which are silver. If the same, they can be found very cheaply here. I've picked up some for a dollar a box.

I have it on pretty good authority that, although some of this has circulated in bootlegs, the source material for the box set are radio station tapes, and the sound quality is reportedly very good, much better than the bootlegs. I'm pretty excited by this release

I very much like the Kuhn brothers' 1968 album, IMPRESSIONS OF NEW YORK, on Impulse!, with Jimmy Garrison and Aldo Romano. One hears in it the early strains of Euro post-bop and even free jazz. Quite interesting. I've not been a fan f Joachim, but I like Rolf's clarinet playing. I was fortunate to see him in NYC not too long ago in the Jazzwerkstatt Festival. He has some good albums on that label. I actually am a fan of Shepp, but I much prefer his "fire music" phase; the later performances are quite variable. He can be downright dull, or at least flat, sometimes. Anyway, I'll have to check clips before I decide to purchase, but the album does look interesting. Might have been cool to have included Rolf on the album!

Some albums are better that way

Anyone have any thoughts on the Blakey groups with Dave Schnitter? It's been a while since I listened to Blakey, let alone later Blakey, which I consider to have the form but not the "inner mounting flame" (so to speak) of his earlier groups. But I have seen Schnitter live a couple of times in the last few years and rather like his style. I recall reading some interview of Schnitter where he talks about his Blakey experience. I think his take on it was that the group was really coming into its own but got cut short , for some reason(s) I don't recall.

Did anyone ever take the phrase literally? I hope not. It's only mean to suggest which 10 or 12 records you would want with you if you knew you would be listening to them for a long time. A good question to sharpen one's thinking and evaluative facility. Whenever discussion turns to the relative merits of a musician, I always like to ask, what desert island disk did he or she create? A good way to narrow the field considerably.

OK, this is not going to be easy, I see. When I insert the image address in the Insert Image box, then click Insert Image command, all I get is a little blue box with a question mark.
-
Thanks. I'll give it a try and let you know.

The references to "another source", "downloading", and ".jpg address" make is sound like you're talking about a photo you found online. Is that the case? Yes. I'm thinking mostly of album covers from online sources. I know some online sources can't be used because they have the wrong file extension (I think Amazon falls in this category).

I download the jpg to I Photo, then try to copy and paste into the post. But i only get the jpg address. I've never had this problem before

What the heck, I'll plunge on Shepp's, MAGIC OF JUJU. PM sent.

I was away from the Board for a while and so may have forgotten some basic technical matters, but I simply can't figure out how to copy a photo from another source and paste it into a post. I used to do it all the time, but can't get it to work no. I usually just get the jpg address. I've been using the "Attach JPG" function. I also switched to a Mac; does that have anything to do with it? Anyway, I ran a search in the Help forums and came up with nothing. If someone could either tell me what the problem or the solution is, or point me to a thread where this has been discussed, I'd really appreciate it.
