Any particular version really stand out for you?

Reading and spinning records this afternoon: Joanne Brackeen - "Ancient Dynasty" - Columbia/Tappan Zee. With Joe Henderson, Eddie Gomez, Jack DeJohnette. Don't think this one made it to CD-- should though. Everyone plays hard on this one. Weather Report - "I Sing the Body Electric" - Columbia 31352 CTI. Lateef sings and plays the sax. Funkified. Columbia 9189 Columbia KC 30640 I just pulled these pretty much at random, didn't realize these were all Columbia recordings, except the Lateef.

Two things - RVG and nuthin' happnin'. B-) I know I couldn't get anything past you That was easy. Did Creed Taylor ruin Montgomery? Or was Montgomery's talents already failing and this was Creed's way of "packaging" Wes for sales? I like Milt's vibes playing, and the "Statements" album is a whole lot better than Wes's album; admittedly, though, good, not great.

				Penguin 7th ed.

Yes, these guys definitely have their biases, which one gets to recognize after a while. Which sort of supports my comment that there if a lot of real critical activity in this huge book-- we just might always like the results of that critical activity It's clear to me at least that they are tired of the hard bop school, and tend to view it as formulaic (some of it is, really). Thus, they tend to underrate someone like Clark on occasion. OTOH, with all the Funny Rat posts lately, I thought I'd check what Cook & Moton had to say. They give a goodly amount of space to many Funny Rat dudes like Brotzmann, whom they like quite a bit. This is also a critical judgment call-- not everyone would agree. But that's what makes Penguin kind of fun. I don't have the very latest issue. Editing problems are a book industry-wide problem, as publishing houses cut back on editorial staff and just throw the product out there with little oversight. Probably not the fault of Cook and Morton. Could also be that they just dont; want to be bothered. Hav eyou ever had to edit your own work. Painful -
I know it' sbeen panned by about everyone, an with some justificaion, really, but thought I'd give it a spin anyway: There are some terrific musicians on here--Hancock, Carter, Bobby Rosengardem RayBarretto, Grady Tate, Hubert Laws) , but they are lost in the wash of over-orchestrated arrangements. A Creed Taylor "production." This album is so mellow (or sporific if you prefer) they ought to make it mandatory listening to drivers on the DC area Beltway (a notoriously congested and aggressive roadway that encircles Washington, Dc, home to more type A personalities than anywhere else ). Milt Jackson with Hank Jones, Paul Chambers, Connie Kay. Impulse! Milt always has that bluesy, swinging sound. I'm sure you folks will know what these two albums have in common?

Trolling through the N-H website, a lot of those album covers "borrow" pretty heavily from classic BN covers. The "Birdland" albums are obvious, but many of the others use Miles Reid design concepts.

Can't be real... Jewish guy playing hockey? The REAL miracle would be if they ever get pro hockey going again in the US . I don't think even Jesus could end the lockout -
Isn't this the one which begins with a scene in which Julia Louis- Dreyfus (Elaine from Seinfeld) is giving her boyfriend a hummer? B-) I took my then girlfriend-- now wife--to see this one-- she married me anyway

"Branching Out"- Nat Adderley with Johnny Griffin and The Three Sounds. Riverside vinyl.

Chuck, has there been some announcement that Fantasy is going to gut its catalog or delete titles? Or is this an inference from the recent sale? Or some "inside" info?

I've not really had that impression. In fact, what I like about Morton and Cook is their often pungent opinions and sharp commentary. In general, I think they provide a good overview of an artist's body of work. With the thousands of CDs reviewed, some of no particular interest, it wouldn't be surprising if some of the reviews are boiler plate; in fact, I'm surprised not more of the reviews are. But in most cases, I do get the impression of real critical effort going on. I'd be interested in any example of plagiarism, or near-plagiarism. -

Happy Birthday. Good luck with your web site. It's looking FINE -
I had a friend who appeared on Jeopardy. There is a very lengthy amd complicated screening process just to get on the show. My friend told me that working the buzzer is really a big part of doing well on the show. It's not really a buzzer, or at least it's not as simple as clicking a button. It has a rubbery feel. There is a lockout mechanism too. So, yes, the more you are on the show, the better you get at manipulating the buzzer (reading this description over, sounds a lot like something else ).

Mamas and Papas, "20 Golden Hits"- double LP on Dunhill. I needed some feel good music.

Alison, I admire your bravery. Everyone on this Board is wishing you well. That's probably the ONLY topic we could all ever agree upon! -
I note that he also seems to consider himself quite the expert recording engineer. Coltrane is not nearly a good enough musician, and RVG is not nearly a good enough recording (or remastering) engineer for this dude. Quite an ego trip. OTOH, I wonder why this guy went to ALS in the first place? It would be nice to think that, despite his criticism, he has felt the power of this music. After all, he could have spent his copious free time analyzing a Britey Spears album, or something Who knows? Maybe ALS will continue to get under his skin. Maybe in 6 months, this dude is going to pop it back into the CD player and start digging it. It would be nice to think so. A lot of people have started out saying they "hated" jazz, and later become jazz freaks.

Hit a record store, bought some vinyl, and also these CDs, $6.00 each, which seemed like a good deal: Reflections - Julius Hemphill - Freedom Fly - Mark Turner, jeff Ballard, Larry Grenadier- Savoy Footprints Live! Wayne Shorter - Verve Same Time Twice-Matthias Lupri Group, w/ Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel- Summit The Fred Hersch Trio +2 - w/Tony Malaby, Ralph Alessi -Palmetto I'm All For You - Joe Lovano, Hank Jones, Paul Motian, George Mraz - Blue Note

You got that right, and you haven't even read any of his posts yet

Reminds me of the story of the scientist who analyzed a bumblebee's wings, bodily structure, weight, etc, computed all the variables and concluded it couln't fly I've seen this approach taken to poems, where each syllable, each word, gets analyzed to the nth degree, while the beauty and mystery of the poem itself gets completely lost.

I recommend the General Tso Chicken on the menu. I always recommend the General Tso chicken. I saw the same group in DC. I think you'll enjoy it. I hope you'll give us a report.

Did another COMPARO today int he interests of audio science and becuase I had some time to kill. Actually, I was reading Bohr's "Theory of the Atom" and decided to take a short break Anyway, played a Liberty/UA pressing, "Van Gelder" in the dead wax, of Jackie McLean's "Action," and compared it to the RVG CD. The comments I made earlier in this thread about my comparison of Horace Silver's "Blowin' the Blues Away" apply here. I won't repeat them. Anyway REALLY interested can go back a page or two Suffice it to say that comparing the two CDs to each other, their characteristics are pretty close. Frankly, on listening to them in this context, my opinion of them went up. I think they are pretty well done. I didn't find anything amiss with the cymbals on either one. One can discern a consistency of approach in the sound of the two CDs. BTW, I am not knocking Wolff's observations, which might very well be on target on the particular CD he cited. Also, I'm not carrying RVG's torch (like he needs me to, right? ). Actually, I'm glad the topic came up, as motivation to do some first-hand observation. BTW, I thought even this later-era pressing sounded pretty good too.

Liberty UA pressing, with "Van Gelder" in the dead wax. Part of the great LP vs CD comparo! Roy Eldridge "Rockin Chair" Polydor Japan pressing Mono. Fabulous trumpet player. Not news to anyone. Great sounding LP. A little change of direction: The Byrds, Roger McGuinn, Steppenwolf, The Electric Prunes, The Holy Modal Rounders (when was the last time you heard them?), And Fraternity of Man "Don't Bogart That Joint My Friend" ). Back to some jazz, and some of the ugliest humming/singing ever done at the keyboard: Keith Jarrett- "Shades"- w/ Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, and Guilherme Franco. Jarrett makes some godawful vocal noises. Don't know of Mr. Franco is to blame, but there is some very ineffective bits of percuission bells, something that sounds like a chime rack, which mostly get in the way of Redman, Haden, and Motian tearing it up.

Sonic1: When I was buying records back in the 70s, Nonesuch was one of my favorite labels, mostly becuase it offered a huge amount of classical, mostly Baroque, music, at prices lower than the major labels. I did pick up some Crumb, Bolcom, etc, still have it, but haven't a clue where it is at the moment. Have to give it a spin; don't know if I can listen to that much Crumb seriatim. Anyway, is Nonesuch still active?
