That's James, right? I got all the records I bought from him, but haven't spoken with him for a while. I just checked my PMs, and all I have on James is his address; no email address. Seemed like a nice guy, a retired doctor. He used the money from his sales for a VPI record cleaning machine. He's probably locked himself away, spinnin' vinyl non-stop... Keep trying the PM/email function on this board to contact him. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Belated birthday wishes from me as well, Rod. Sounds like it was great!

Much appreciated, Scott! Okay, I got a little bit of listening time in this morning...when I should be working...here goes: George Braith - Two Souls in One. Scorpio pressing. This is basically a transcription of my notes while listening... Mono label and cover. Label says BN-4148. Cover, on back, just says 4148 on the upper right corner as opposed to 84148. Says stereo in upper left corner however... Side one. Sound is mono. Not a bad thing...surely it's a fold-down. But very enjoyable. A tall and deep soundstage. A quiet and flat pressing. I did end up turning on my subwoofer; needed a bit more bass. I even cut the highs a couple decibels with EQ. But once I hit the last (third) track on Side 1, "Poinciana," I got rid of the EQ...what a gorgeous tune. This track sounds just perfect. Unfortunately, the end of the track is cut off before the fade had completed... Side two. "Mary Had A Little Lamb." This track never fails to thrill me, especially Grant Green. Sound is still mono. Then "Braithaway" begins...IT'S STEREO!!! I turned off the sub at this point; this sounds just incredible and makes me wish the whole record was stereo. It's a great mix, with Braith far left, organ dead-center, and GG & Donald Bailey on the far right. Billy Gardner and Donald Bailey really lock in to each other during Gardner's solo. Lots of nooks and crannys that they fill during this solo. A beautiful, nearly-perfect album! My verdict: ---------------------------------- Next up: Ahmed Abdul-Malik - Sounds of Africa - New Jazz 8282 - Cover says "High Fidelity" on back; also on purple "long-playing microgroove" label. No mention of stereo anywhere... Side one. Hmmm, is this stereo? Maybe not...no EQ or sub necessary; great hi-fi sound. Quiet vinyl, nearly flat. First two tracks are filled with many percussionists and Abdul-Malik's bass up front. I'm noddin' along. A poignant, story-telling solo by Richard Williams on muted trumpet for the third track, "Nadusilma." Loved it. Track 4 "Out of Nowhere." This is a jazz quartet piece, without the extra percussion; the only one on the set. A wonderful, finger-poppin' rhythm track here, with Tommy Turrentine displaying a beautiful tone on the head. Eric Dixon's tenor solo steals the show here. Tommy tries with his solo, but sounds hesitant and can't pull it off...but then shit, he plays the theme again beautifully, just like at the beginning of the track. Side 2 has more African rhythms dominating the side. But this one definitely sounds stereo, with a tambourine prominently displayed in the right channel. But I swear all the percussion is mono... Abdul-Malik's bass has a wonderfully woody sound throughout. Very well-recorded. My verdict: --------------------------------- I'm quite pleased with these two Lps...but don't worry; all my reviews will certainly not be this glowing... More to come when I get time...

Mobley recordings (including sidemen dates) NOT on Blue Note
Parkertown replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Did you have to "instantly fuck the shit out of her"? -
Is there anyone around here who has come across a Scorpio reissue which sounds good? What are the chances if pressing quality is erratic and tape sources dubious (I wouldn't think Blue Note would let a low budget operation use anything than second or third generation copies). I shall try to post a list of the ones I think are okay, and then the real stinkeroos...

We were singin' that same song last nite, Kalo. Now: Bigelow's "Lemon Lift" tea. w/ a bit 'o honey... -
And yeah, those Scorpio reissues are hit or miss. The copy of Hank's Dippin' I recently grabbed sucks big time... They also press some Fantasyjazz stuff...the big giveaway are real glossy, thin-but-sturdy covers. w/ no bar codes. Hit or miss...I only take a chance on 'em from stores that allow me to return the shitty ones...

I keep striking out on finding this one...my buddy the tuba player highly recommends this one. Don Butterfield on tuba, right? Now spinnin': Leon Russell - Best of Leon - Shelter Records. Good ole swampy, Okie sludge.

You know how they were playing bebop in the late '60s

What is this thread about? -
And now, for something completely different!

Everybody Digs Bill Evans - Riverside - Japanese pressing. Perfect!
-
Ummm, Chewy? "Big ones" means $1000 bills. $1 bills are little ones...small potatoes...heh...
-
Schuman - Carnaval - Classic Records 180gm reissue of RCA Living Stereo title...
-
Last nite, before bedtime: Bill Evans - Trio '64 - Verve stereo - an original, I think... This morning: Bill Evans Trio - How My Heart Sings! - Riverside black label stereo. Is this an original?
-
I've got that one too, Peter. And I agree. I also recently got "Hub-Cap" as a sealed DMM pressing and it's super sounding as well.

Sorry s/a/r, but no Thad on this set. The trumpet player for the Hawk Flies High set, as listed in the notes, is Idrees Sulieman. Here's the AMG listing... http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:xux8b5b4bsqh

The Hawk Flies High - from the mid-70 Milestone two-fer "The Hawk Flies." Great music, scary-ass cover photo of Hawk letting cigarette smoke ooze from his mouth. Yuck!
-
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan - CL 1986 - 2 eye mono. Only VG, but that clear mono sound just shines through...NM cover though...
-
Which set? Gillespie, right? Not Reece, right?

You must've created some good Karma for yourself throughout your life, s/a/r...

Now spinnin': The Who - Who's Next - Classic Records 150gm reissue. Whoa...this company's pressings can be hit or miss. But I took a chance and I must say this one sounds freakin' incredible! A month or so ago, I ended up returning their 150gm version of the mono "A Quick One"... Sibilance city...

I've got a cd of that one...I recall liking it very much; it's peaceful, right? Maybe I'll spin that one later tonight.

Abacab - Genesis, along with the studio tracks from the US issue of THREE SIDES LIVE, which I s'pose will never see the light of day on CD. ( I guess I could call this needle-drop THREE SIDES STUDIO! ) I'm cheating as well, since I don't have a record player at work! Oooh, that sounds like a nice pairing...I may have to make one of those as well.
