Don't know if this is "Ratty" enough or not, but I'm listening to Daniel Humair: Liberte Surveillee Sketch, and it sounds very good to my ears. Marc Ducret on guitar is someone that I've never come across before who has a nice "free-jazz" sensibilty to his work. Cd also has Ellery Eskelin on tenor, who is his normal excellent self. Nice double cd set that has an inside/outside feel to it, and the only reason I picked it up was that I enjoyed the HUM 3 cd set so much. Chaney: I've yet to hear a good example of a cbe cd. I'll be interested if anyone has some good recomendations.
  2. Any update on this set, I've looked on CD Universe, etc. and can't find a release date. Hope it doesn't take as long as that Granz "tribute" that was going to appear on the Verve website.

Just want to sing the praises one more time for Roscoe Mitchell's Solo 3. I've been listening to it a lot lately and it is really a very beautiful disk. I always find it interesting how Mitchell's music seems to come out of silence. It's as if he's been thinking of what to play for a long time and it's not coming out until he's ready. The song 1999/2002: For flute and percussion cage is one of the better flute things I've ever heard -- very gracefull. Plus, the percussion cd gives a wonderful sense of Mitchell's timing and his approach to the whole sound/silence aspect.
  4. How much do they add to ship to America? I'm very interested in getting the complete Sexteto Y Septeto Habanero set.
  5. I can imagine a case where who controls the Ayler estate is in doubt, and instead of waiting another twenty years, Revenant got the father's permission to go ahead and, my guess, keep some money in an account awaiting the proper legal decision. Like everyone else, I've heard nothing but great things about the businees side of Revenant, it's just that I was very surprised at the quoted development.
  6. Interesting article, but this part stood out and I'm not sure what to make of it. "Holy Ghost" is coming out against the wishes of Ayler's widow, Arlene Ayler of Euclid, and their daughter, Desiree Ayler of Garfield Heights. "We gave [Revenant] no authorization," Desiree says. "They don't want to pay us. . . . My father would be very upset if he knew these people were doing this to us." Ayler also is survived by a son, Curtis Roundtree, from a different relationship. "Revenant always endeavors to work as closely as possible with the family members, friends and colleagues who were close to the artist, and did so in this case as well," says Blackwood, who is an attorney. "As a legal matter, the Ayler estate is far from settled," Blackwood says. "All legitimate claimants to the estate have been or will be compensated as provided for by law." Hmmmm.....
  7. Boy, I hate you guys! That pre-order price was just too good to pass up. One more pre-order to add to the list. Souldn't have listened to Spiritual Unity last night -- it was the straw that broke this camel's back.
  8. This is one of my favorite Smith cd, just has a nice, funky feel to it and France adds some very good playing to the date. I have the JRVG, and the sound is excellent.

Been listening to Anthony Braxton - Georg Grawe Duo [amsterdam] 1991, and I like it a lot. Grawe and Braxton blend very well together, giving each other good ideas to play off of, and Braxton, especially on cl. seem very creative. Grawe's short phrases seems very percussive and move the music along nicely. Good cd to pick up if you come across it sometime.
  10. New cd of the Jerry Garcia Band coming out that looks nice. Here's a good PRE-ORDER DEAL people can check out if you wish. I'd love to buy it, but I'm saving my money for the Dylan concert at UC Irvine right now. Decisions, decisions.
  11. I was able to pick up Bear Family's Walking the Floor Over You for a very cheap price, and I'm enjoying it very much. Tubb's vocal are so straight forward, seems to be talking just to you -- love it. Thinking of trying Wynn Steward next. edit for bad spelling
  12. There was a similar problem, band members said, with the guitar solos, some of which contained trace elements of what musicians call "passion." In addition, the interplay among bass, drums, and guitars occasionally produced uncomfortable polyrhythmic effects that provoked unintentional toe-tapping or head-bobbing in listeners. The problems were fixed through extensive re-recording.
  13. Highest MPHs I've seen is that stretch between Barstow and Laughlin -- people are flying on that road.
  14. It has to be Chico! his sense of timing and how he would turn away from Groucho after delivering some truly aweful pun, always cracked me up.
  15. Matthew, wasn't Merton a Dylan fan? I seem to recall from his bio that he even wrote a poem that he hoped Dylan would set to music. Thanks for the words re: the Heylin book. I'll have to check it out sometime... Post-accident is precisely where Robert Shelton's NO DIRECTION HOME derails, IMO. Yeah, Merton was a big Dylan fan, which would make sense since both viewed themselves a "Watchmen" who see things that others don't. There's a famous chapter at the end of Merton's book Sign of Jonas that has him on "night watch" in his monastery, that he uses as a metaphor for his life. A precusor, if you will, to "All Along the Watch Tower".
  16. Do book pre-orders count? Ordered Lyrics: 1962-2002 and Chronicles, Vol. 1 both by Bob Dylan. Now, I know that Chronicles will give a unique outlook on events by His Bobness, but still, it should be interesting. Plus, how can you go wrong reading the lyrics?
  17. Finally finished this tonight and it is a great "foundational" book that all Dylan fans should have. What I really like is that Heylin's gives a lot of space to the "post-accident" Dylan, and gives good insights to his entire life. What emerges is a Dylan that doesn't seem to be too good at the personal relationship side of life, and a man who has trouble relating to women. On a positive note, it is nice to see Heylin taking the religious side of Dylan in a serious manner, and seeing it as a lynchpin for a great deal of his creativity. The musical insights are ok, nothing that blew me away though.
  18. Funny put-down of the Dead by Clinton Heylin in his book Bob Dylan: Behind the Shades Revisted. Writing about the Dylan / Dead hookup, he writes: ... Dylan was tying himself to a band who had all the ambition and conceit of one of the great Coltrane quartets but the technical ability of the Buzzcocks. Ouch! I've never heard any of the Dylan / Dead tapes, were they that bad together?
  19. Seems as if there should be some other material on this set. The time for these 12 lps don't appear to add up to 8 cds. Still, this'll be a pre-order set, for sure.
  20. I often think that Wilson and later Lester Young have a lot in common. Both are/were dismissed easliy by many people, yet Wilson and Young produced some beautiful music in later life. Even their "failures" reveal facets of the human condition where, in their musics ugliness, they still reveal a truth about their lives, and on some level, our own lives. Sorry if this doesn't make any sense, but at times, music doesn't have to be "played right" to still have truth in it. Needless to say, I'll be getting this first day it comes out.
  21. This is really sad, the Ramones were what got me through High School is San Diego. CANNOT believe only Tommy is left.
  22. I said two weeks. What the heck, at Candlestick, Reggie Smith was always going up in the stands after people, and nothing happened to him. Candlestick was such a cool place anyway, anything could happen there. B-) Edit: And not to mention Erik Karros, Mike Piazza, Derrel Thomas , and, I'm sure Tommy Lasorda wanted some action in the stand also.
  23. The Fabulous Dorseys in Hi-fi. Vol. 1. A Columbia "six-eye" that has a fantastic soundstage, you can hear the instruments layered on top of each other. Just wonderful, traditional, Big Band music, that is great to play at night.
