  1. It's something that I never thought would happen, but I've become interested in early Country and Western music. About a year ago, on a whim, I purchased the Proper box on Ernest Tubb (please don't yell at me!) and I have enjoyed it ever since. The singing on the Tubb's box is wonderfull, and the man did write great songs. A couple of months ago I got the Hank Williams set, and, again, I enjoyed it. Now I'm wondering what are the ligit cds and box sets out there that I should be getting. I really, really don't like what's on country radio, and the era that seems to match my interest in up until the 1960s. So, let me have those cds recommendation that I really need!
  2. Kind of Blue. Classic Records 200 gm version, and it's very nice.
  3. This one falls under otherwise: I have a Tigger stuffed animal sitting on top of my computer, and a Tigger snowball on my desk. For some reason, Tigger just makes me smile.
  4. Has to be because Verve is involved. The way they include breakdowns in their sets is a joke, esp. the Powell set.
  5. What's on that, Matthew? Still wishing they'd put out an "official" complete BASEMENT TAPES. It's a 26 cd set that has everything that was ever recorded from Dylan's 1966 "World Tour". On stage, rehearsals, hotel rooms, and I think a sneeze and burp of Dylan's also. I just think that what Dylan created by '66 was so unique, and so powerfull, that I would love to hear all the music from that tour. Re: a "complete Basement Tapes" set -- there's a complete edition out of Germany making the rounds, and ... er, ahem, I hear it's pretty good.
  6. One rock box set I would love to have, but not in my lifetime, is Bob Dylan: Jewels and Binoculars. A couple of days ago it went for well over $800.00 on ebay. That's my nirvana of box sets. *sigh*
  7. The Jam is nice, and don't forget The Style Council either. Love the sound both these bands had.
  8. Making my way through Charles Dicken's David Copperfield, and loving every page. I had forgotten what a wonderful writer Dickens is; so alive, creative, and real. Another book I'm reading is Bob Dylan: Behind the Shades Revisited by Clinton Heylin. It's a very interesting read and goes into great detail about Dylan's life. Recommended.
  9. Try working to help the poor, believe me you'll get every scam run past you. My favorite was one guy who was .... shall we just say, not nice. Anyway, he kept trying to run every scam under the sun to get money, my fav was when he "rented" someone's kids so he could make the rounds, you know, "I need money for these poor kids of mine!" Well, the last time he came I told him: "Get lost! I'm just sick of you running all the scams past us, just leave and don't come back." Then he says:" That wasn't me, it was my twin!" Lord help these people.
  10. But am I reading right?? $14.00 for a large Schneider Weisse, a wheat beer?? Yikes, how much for a Bud.
  11. With KKJZ, you get what you get -- a nice mainstream jazz station where the "comfort zone" if very narrow. Forget anything outside, free-jazz, A/G, or any other weirdness. The "Mostly Bop", "Soul Jazz", and "Jazz on the Latin Side" or nice listens, but, bottom line: You don't get people to pony up major money by having Brotzmann & Cecil Taylor on your play list.
  12. With any luck, there'll also be a part where the priest gives a homily..
  13. Thanks for the info. I had thought all three masses were recorded, but, what do I know? On Mary Lou's Mass, are voices involved, or is it only piano music?
  14. I know that Mary Lou Williams wrote music for at least three masses. Have any of these been released? The only lead I have is a lp called Mary Lou's Mass released by the "Mary" label, but after three years of looking, I've never seen a copy. Anyone have any leads on this?
  15. He just wants our money to go to more important things than Mosaic lp sets. He's really doing this for our own good. Thanks, I haven't been able to get a lp set in a while, and I'm the better for it.
  16. Though, if I remember correctly, a lot of Bix fans didn't even want to think of the possibility of Beiderbecke having a one night stand with Berton's brother. A book that I really like on Bix, though it goes into excruciating detail, is Bix: The Leon Bix Beiderbecke Story by Philip R. Evans, Linda K. Evans. Everything you ever wanted to know about Bix is in this book -- kind of expensive though.
  17. Don't want to open a can of worms, but I would think they would wait to see if DVD-A become the next "new thing" or not. Heck even Sony isn't releasing SACD's right now and they're the ones who were making the big push regarding this format.
  18. Has Bix Restored: Volume 5 come out yet, or did life just pass me by yet again?
  19. I love The Incredible Jimmy Smith at Club Baby Grand vol. 1 & 2. Has a rougher feel than "Small's Paradise", it's better recorded, and Smith is HOT!
  20. Which would be very sad if true. I must admit I had a soft spot in my heart for Mnytime; he was wild, erratic, intelligent, made things up at times, and my guess would be, he didn't understand himself all that well. I run across people like that in life a lot, and all you can do is have a sense of compassion about them and their lives.
  21. The advantage with the "Blue Box" is that is should be cheaper than the MSFL set, but I saw just yesterday on ebay and sealed BC-13 going for $720.00. Maybe I'll just concentrate on my Bob Dylan collection instead.

If that supplier comes through for you, I'd suggest posting its name here so others might grab one of the few remaining copies. I alway listen to an angel! It was CD UNIVERSE. Any other angelic messages for me?

O.K., Thanks to Chaney, I should be getting this in a couple of days, and if this IS NOT DA SHIT, the King might start worrying about a revolution!

I was on vaction the past couple of weeks, and I took along the Art Ensemble: 1967/68 Box Set that Chuck Nessa put out, it was music that I found to be overwhelming at times. I found the music very human for some reason, by that, I mean it was music that communicated directly to me. There were some amazing moments, there was a moment where I could hear a baby crying in the background, obviously a musicians baby, and it added a poingnant touch to the music. Even their use of "vocals" had a tremendous emotional resonance. Another aspect I found interesting was that the music seemed to come out of silence. Sometimes in A/G jazz, it seems as if musical discoveries come after an extended amount of music, but the AE music seems to have silence as a source of discovery. Don't know if that makes any sense or not, but there it is. I'll have to listen to this set a couple of more times to get my thoughts straight. Edit: P.S. Chuck, if you read this know that I will (finally) get around to e-mailing you more extensive thoughts on the AE Box, I just need to listen to it more.
