  1. A wonderful paragraph by Michael Fitzgerald (from the Wayne Shorter biography discussion) that gives a great perspective on my question of why the Powell biography is taking so long. Thanks for the great insight Mr. Fitzgerald. PS: Crossover can be good at times.
  2. Am I wrong in understanding that Powell underwent numerous electric shock treatments? and that he had insulin theapy? Just those two treatments would screw anyone up.
  3. Yeah, come on GofM, get with the program! Seriously, I can understand why it's taking a long time to finish -- just to be able to set the record straight, seperate fact from fantasy in Powell's life, has to be one major undertaking. Can you imagine how many different versions of the beatdown that Powell recieved form the police? And, was it Monk's pot? Who in the heck really was Buttercup, and how did Powell and her relate? If there's any chance that the Powell estate would allow Mr. Pullman is look at Powell's medical records? The questions are endless.
  4. Been listening to Lonnie Smith's Think! a couple of times, and it is a great cd. I wouldn't call it heavily greased-up, more in the Let 'em Roll sound, with good arrangments of the songs. Lee Morgan & David Newman make a great front line (of course), with Smith in primo form. Just seems as if the drums are way up front in the RVG mix, but that's a small quible for a great cd. Speaking of Let 'em Roll, I guess I should get the Mosaic Select of Big John, despite the garbled sound on the first cut. Trying to make up my mind on it though.
  5. Quick mailing by CDbaby got This is the Place in my eager hands this morning. Listening on my computer right now, and it really does sound great. Congratulations on a great cd.
  6. Thought that Mr. Pullman would have his Powell biography out by now. I did a Google search, and this is all that I can find from February 2005. Anyone know whats going on?
  7. This title alone is enough to make my want to get this set: Aaron Harris, His Hoodoo Woman, and the Hat That Started a Riot.
  8. Have to love those hard hitting reviews on Dusty Groove: Proof that even a tiger can change his stripes! The album's a rare instrumental outing from Denny McLain -- a 60s pitching star on the Detroit Tigers, but also a heck of a nice little organ player in a small combo setting!
  9. That is what caused me to ask this question. I used the "print this topic" and the pictures came out. Looks like I'll have to use a combination of "turn off images" & "print this topic".
  10. Thanks for the quick replies.
  11. I would love to print out some threads we have on organ jazz, but I found out when I printed the one on 60's and 70's Organ.. it printed the pictures, and is taking forever. I would like to print out the Keepin' it greazy!!! monster, but without pictures. Anyway I can do that?
  12. Just had to say that, after listening to Let 'em Roll again, that this is a monster record. Latona is such a great song, and the way this cd is sequenced, I mean, can The Shadow Of Your Smile come at any other place? This has to be at the very top of my essential organ records.
  13. The Spiritual Teachings of Ralph Waldo Emerson by Richard Geldard. The more I read of Emerson, the more I'm convinced that he is America's greatest theologian. Very interesting to see how his conviction that everyone needs to have an "...original relation with the universe" is still a radical call in this day and age.
  14. Got off my lazy behind and ordered the cd this evening -- sounds like primo stuff, and fun.
  15. Nice, funky set by Melvin Sparks Band: August 3, 2003. North Beach Jazz Festival., that's worth a listen. Sparks is in pretty good form and the sound is good.
  16. Happy Birthday!
  17. Hank Mobley: Soul Station Thelonious Monk: Brilliant Corners Daniel Carter: Luminescence And with a big thanks to Chuck Nessa: AEC: Box Set Diz & Parker
  18. +1. I am going to love this one. The good news is that all these sets (boxes or selects) interest me, the bad news is that all these sets (boxes or selects) interest me! ← I'm also interested in this one, but, I must admit, I am underwhelmed by Nelson's work on the Jimmy Smith records; too many stock arrangments to my taste. Now, the Chu Berry set sounds like it will be a wonder to listen to.
  19. I'll put it this way: When I sold my collection I kept very few cds -- Anita was one of them.
  20. Being back here, it had escaped my mind how boring it is living in a small town, I mean, there is really nothing to do! Maybe I can keep looking at my Amoeba business card to keep myself sane.
  21. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.
  22. I just finished watching this a second time, and I don't think a TV series can get any better than this. On one level it's a great comedy, but turn your head just a fraction, and you have a great tragedy of daily life. One last point: Amazing! Redemption with the words "F*** off, Finchy"
  23. I'm still trying to adjust leaving Los Angeles and moving to the Pacific Northwest. Rain in July, INDEED!
  24. Nature. Ralph Waldo Emerson. Very interesting work of Emerson's trying to update Plato. It's engaging to read how Emerson handles to question of what to do with the "religious impulse" in the human person when organized religion has failed. Also in the middle of reading Walden and Thoreau's Journels. The "Transcendental Movement" does say a great deal to the modern world.
  25. Since the NBA is a players league, it's all about whether the Pistons will play for Flip or not. LB was able to get guys to buy into the team concept, look at 'Sheed, he was a monster for Brown. My perdiction is that Rasheed will walk all over Flip Philips, er, I mean Saunders, and then wind up being traded. Since the bottom palyoff teams in the East are weak, Pistons go out in the second round next year. Despite all his baggage, LB was able to get the Pistons over the hump, and in professional sports, that's all that matters.
