  1. The Boys' Crusade: The American Infantry In Northwestern Europe, 1944 - 1945 by Paul Fussell. Interesting take by Fussell, trying to convey the reality of the infantryman's life in Europe. Not too many pages, just 165, but an interesting read. I might try his memoirs next.
  2. Miles Davis & Gil Evans. Does anyone know where this tape comes from? Is it commercially available?
  3. Milestones: The Music and Times of Miles Davis by Jack Chambers. I've always liked this one, lots of information. I now have numerous books, more than I dare count, at various stages of completion, about Miles cluttering my desk and tables in my home.
  4. It must be a cosmic law of the universe that when you buy something off ebay, the next time the same item goes up for sale, the price is less than what you paid....
  5. Would not Lord's have that? If the Lord is your shepherd you most certainly shall want.....for composer credits . Ah, that would be like walking in the valley of the shadow of death for me....
  6. Would not Lord's have that? Expensive, I know. I was hoping that Lohmann's would have that for the songs. But still, Miles Ahead, is very good, with all the doodad's I like, and it's free.
  7. I, too, would love the complete SI on dvd. Hard to believe that there was an era is sports where an important game, or series was played, and it wasn't on tv, especially baseball. You would have to wait for SI to come out to read a detailed account of what happened. *Sigh* I feel like a dinosaur... I'm going have to get this New Yorker set.
  8. Thanks guys for confirming what I thought was true. I've come to depend on the Miles Ahead Discography so much, I was in a quandary after I read something that I knew was wrong -- thought maybe I was wrong, and I wanted to make sure who actually wrote the song. Anyone have an opinion about The Sound of Miles Davis: The Discography: A Listing of Records and Tapes, 1945-1991 by Jan Lohmann? Worth getting?
  9. This is on Hulu I remember watching Wild In The Streets and thinking "Okay, that was really a strange movie..."
  10. Interesting series of mixes. The Beach Boys vs J Dilla: Pet Sounds In The Key Of Dee -- I Just Wasn't Made For These Times http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lao7fJWbHVE&feature=related My other favorite: Don't Talk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZvmVYr16nU&feature=related
  11. Caroline No (a capella). Short, and even more heartbreaking then the album version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qti_9EuE22o&feature=related
  12. The Miles Davis Reader: Interviews and Features From Downbeat Magazine. Very nice collection of the articles in Downbeat.
  13. I agree with you on this, the Birth of the Cool version has to be by Lewis. Interesting that Mulligan didn't do this one for Re-birth of the Cool album.
  14. Thanks for looking, I completely forgot about AMG. I might be that the Miles Ahead site has it wrong, though that's hard to believe. Not a big question, be interesting none the less.
  15. I know, I really, really, need to get me a good discography, but until then (when I have the $$$), I have some questions that, hopefully in people's kindness, I need help with. 1. S'il Vous Plait has been credited as written by John Lewis. However, the Miles Ahead site lists it as S'il vous Plait (W. Mourant-B. Stegmeyer). And when I researched further, I came up with S'il Vous Plait (Stegmeyer, Bill and Mourant, Walter) Empire Music Inc. 1954. Which is interesting, to have a song under copyright in 1954 that was played and recorded on September 4, 1948, @ Royal Roost. So, did Lewis write and arrange the song? The record would seem to indicate that he did. 2. Was this ever recorded other than the September 4, 1948, Royal Roost recording? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  16. Very sad to read about the death of Willie Davis today. I remember he was my favorite Dodger player growing up, in fact, the first mlb game I saw, Padres vs. Dodgers, he had a thirty game hitting streak stopped. He was an exciting player, and I also remember how amazed Jerry Doggett always was at Davis' deep, baritone voice. RIP 3-Dog
  17. Yup! Hence the "I'm Free!" gag. Doh! Now I get it -- I'm slow at times... very slow.
  18. He is popular to people here - even after his death - who follow British comedies. He came to Dallas on my birthday a few years ago. Wasn't he the guy on Are You Being Served?
  19. It's just smart baseball business to see how the economy goes and how another year of aging effects Jeter. A double dip recession means they likely don't have to spend as much, and if Jeter starts showing his age then you don't go beyond the 3000th hit for length of contract. But the latter event will surely keep him there, and it will be expensive. But given the championships & revenue he's helped the franchise generate it'll be well spent for past service if nothing else. I think that Hal Steinbrenner wants to build his own team, and to do that, he has to get rid of those core players who have been there the last fourteen years or so. Steinbrenner hubris is still alive and well in the Bronx.
  20. Yankees already kicking players & manager under the bus: Hal Steinbrenner says the New York Yankees won't alter their policy against contract extensions and will deal with Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Joe Girardi after the season. Think these three are gone after this season
  21. The Beach Boys: Please Let Me Wonder
  22. I'm speechless. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI38JCvQ4UI&feature=related
  23. How is that? I went through a lot of Powers' books, then I just got tired of all the erudition, which started to come off as know-it-allism to me.
