  1. The advertising campaign goes on .... Well, here is a little "giveaway" for you... I had a bit of free time this noon and created a CD-Covercard for the BFT#42, hope you like it (But don't be too strict with me, I am not used to this pics-and-graphic-software) and it will work for the Cover-designing-print-and-scissor-Process with regards Mr. Bassman
  2. Ahaaaa, advertising is not useless Update is done, there are already 7 lucky listeners with regards Mr. Bassman
  3. Maybe some advertising ??? (not seriously indeed!) :rsmile: .... some BIG LETTERS .... ... some small ones..... good things need time ( a german saying ) ... and, beside this, I'm still not satisfied with disc #2.... i can need some extra time *duckandhide* Well, some facts: There are 2 discs waiting for you, the second disc will contain a very special thema (some of the tunes), there will be a bit of bass-playing (ha ha) and ... there will be no music in this BFT containing me on the bass (mikeweil worked very hard against that, but nobody had done this in the BFTs before, why me ??? ) now... your turn with regards and a big smile Mr. Bassman
  4. no problem with this kind of stepping on .... I can only speak for myself.... I am interested in the music, no matter what sources you use .... and we <maniacs> will always get the stuff... sometimes it is a bit hard to get a certain record. But for the BFT, I think all sources are allowed .... because all tunes will be on a CD with regards Mr. Bassman
  5. Well.... friends of the silvery plates..... 6. Very sad, indeed, mikeweil send me a mail with this link. It touches me personally, because I had the chance to talk to him, when he was playing here in a small jazzclub(some years ago). He was a very nice person and he gave me some good advice for life, music and practising. I will miss him, goodbye Aladar!
  7. Okay, I have to state, that it is a bit unfair to you all, but knowing Mike Weil since some days gives me a big advantage, i definitely know some of this takes. But.... not all, only a few I start and in case of the time i will keep it short, maybe some adds later: No 1. I'm not sure, but the tune is influenced by Ravel, Debussy etc. and the piano .... hmmm... sounds not Steinway-ish. It has a warm sound. Can't say more No 2. Okay, another take, I don't know. A marimba-ensemble, but it sounds familiar. A nice floating tune, at least ther is a bit of Africa in this. No 3. Huuu, difficult, a classical tune indeed, but what ? Could it be Schumann ? but what ? I am blind-guessing in this case No 4. Okay, i know this one, even i must have the CD, but at this moment I'm too tired for verifying. I will add this later, when I am sure No 5. This sounds very familiar, i have this on the tounge, but I'm not sure, who the composer is. It has that special impressionistic sound that reminds me to Debussy, but ... I have a lot of his music and i don't remeber this tune (... still too tired for searching....), I am nearly sure, that it is not a Debussy-tune.... No 6. This is a modern vibe, but I hadn't listened to this since now, Mike ! Who is this, oh-oh.... No 7. Okay, this is an harpsichord and an old tune, at least 17th century, but I'm not that familiar... did we listen to this recording during our listening-events? I can't remember that tune. No 8. Hehe, big grin I had this in a second, really !!! It is this great record from a well known Jazz-Bassplayer together with a great female singer playing the cymbalon (you hear at the beginning) from his home with piano and drums. The song is called Na osicce (sorry for the missing accents) = > aspen leafs. The bass-player is George Mraz, the singer/cymbalon-player Zuzana Lapcikova, the piano-player is Emil Viklicky and Billy Hart on drums. The CD is called Morava. No 9. This is a thing i don't know. It has a great influence from folk-music, listen to the rhythm A bit of Oregon (it is not Oregon) the rhythm reminds me to something.... is there a connection to the east-Region of europe ? No 10. Hmmmm, this is something special. I think of ancient instruments or replicas. Not an Instrument from the violin-family... a Viola da gamba ? or something like that ? The sound is definitly with rich overtones. The other could be a kind of a lute (Can't be more specific). Is the tune an old one too ? It sounds a bit into the middle-ages, but i could only guess. No 11. Hehehe, thats a Zappa tune (I am too lazy to verify the title), it must be the ensemble Ambrosia, i had to check my collection for the exact dates (and instruments) No 12. This is nearly a home-game, just to use the soccer-slang. A very special thing... Opera to relax, CD Kyle of Lochalsh, tune No 2 to the lord of the flying carpets. I think Mikeweil will tell you some more. No 13. Okay, this is not a german.... He is (was, he died already) an austrian But i won't tell you, who he is, until i found the title. I give you a clue.... He is a composer and musician. No 14. I know this tune... it is from L.v.Beethoven and called "Für Elise" and I have the suspicion, that this must be a "Tangentenflügel" or even an early "Hammerklavier", and.... it could be an instrument, which belonged him or on which he played. Uff.... I'm finished greetings from Mr. Bassman
  8. Just a few words... soccer was finished at that time I don't remember the details for track 1, sorry. Hehehe.... i had a short "listening-IN" to the Bonus-Disc.... i really know a few of the tunes but this will come inside the right thread. and here i go on: No 6. Really not my fav, this tune. It is a bit overconstructed for me, there is a bit influence of minimal music ? Is there a steeldrum or something else ? Marimbaphone at the end ? Maybe it is fun to play this tune, but listening is tiring. There are some other special instruments in this, but i don't recognize them clearly. No. 7. A nice and interesting bass-line, a hot-cooking-tune, very energetic for me, when listening to it (did that several times). The saxophone is a bit "nervious" The tune reminds me to a chase or something like that, and i have a little feel of Africa (just an impression), the drum solo is a bit like talking drums, story telling eh? The group reminds me a bit to Dave Hollandish works (He had trio-recs with drums and saxophone), but i am not that sure, but the same "open feeling impression" when listeing to the music. But maybe I am totally wrong ? No 8. Ahhh, after that energy-drink take 7 gave to me, a relaxing long drink . Two guitars, well, hmmm, not the slightest idea, but they play in a fine way, not too dirty scofieldish, for me. The bass is an electric one, and must have at least 5 strings (or 6?), there are some very deep tones there. The drummer has a fine drumset, it sounds dynamic and the cymbals have a natural sound. These musicians must had a cool afternoon, a lot of relaxation and fun in doing this stuff. I like this even more, when listeing again and again. I think , I know one or two of them ??? No. 9. A strange thing... big fat drums and a lot of blowing. Very sophisticated tune, these ever-turning-riffs, hmm. Its not my kind of fav. tune. Can't say much more. And now to something completely different..... tomorrow i will add the rest ... promised regards Mr. Bassman
  9. Now it's my turn ... and no bubbles ... beside this, Mike "ordered" me, not to write only about the "guess-who-plays" ... i try... No. 1. I had the chance to listen to this tune some time ago ... in Mike's flat waiting for our band in case of practice. At first i wanted to clean the record .... the idea is quite funny, an odd sounding old record of "all the things you are" mixed up with a little peace of groove-music. It is quite okay, but not very exciting. The music babbles a bit like a little creek. No. 2. Oh well, i think, i know this tune. Trombone and 2 string-Instruments, bass and cello. Maybe I have this one in my own collection, but don't remember. Beside this is a composition with many written notes (I think....) and they play sometimes a bit too academic, there are a lot of little fine things in this tune. For example, listen to the dynamics, there are many unexpected ups and downs, and sometimes they are not academic at all . One of my favs in this competition of interesting tunes. No. 3. Oh - oh. I am not very fond of this tune (sorry... i promised not to write in that manner, but i can't help...). Marimba, and a bass-clarinet (?) and a person (or two) who make(s) a lot of different rhythmic noises. Maybe they play with the hidden metronome, there is no life in this tune, it sounds a bit like some programmed stuff. Heard several times to this tune, but couldn't get a "message" from that tune ... to me ... not every tune needs a message, but this tune is more like listening to talking people from a distance... so you can't understand the words, you hear only a murmuring of words. No fun to listen to this tune, but this is only for me. No. 4. Maybe i know these musicians ??? It reminds me a bit of our Vienna-Visit. :rsmile: Well nice written peace with a bit of funk and swingin'. The place, where they play, must be very small, some cellar or so. The song is very interesting, when they play the more funky things, they build up a kind of tension and when they change to the more swingy-thing... they roll down the hill of tension, it's like a sysiphus-work.... up the hill... uh... sweat... and then... whoopee.... downhill. That my impression But, if this is the Vienna-Band, we listened together with rockefeller-center someday ago, i think that is part of the fun and the kind of humor they had in nearly every peace of music they played. Maybe i can borrow this CD in some days? No. 5. Hmmm, organ, e-piano and natural piano ? (One player or two ???) But a nice bass-solo, hmmm.... should know this musician at the dog-house. A phat e-pianosound... the good old stuff, eh? Not that elegant digi-sound equipment. What is this murmuring sound during the drum-roll- intro, someone's humming ? The drummer is playing a bit nervious for me. He seems to be a bit under stress or electrified (can you see the small sparks at his drumstick-tips ? They are cooking together, but somehow a bit convulsive, i miss the relaxing moment. ... and this are the first 5 tunes, the Rest will follow ... tomorrow Yours Mr. Bassman
  10. ... maybe its time to write a little bit (not only reading sometimes)... At first place a big thankYou to Rockefeller Center for that very nice evening in Vienna, i hope we can manage sometime a repetition. Besinde that, Mikeweil was practicing the whole day that vienna dialect... maybe .. is he going now to the swiss tounge ?? CY Mr. Bassman
  11. ... mike, you like those cars ??? Have we bought the wrong one some time ago ? Should we go with this kind of car to the gigs ??? But.... then ... there will be no more money left for the musicians.... all must go into the tank *duck&cover*
  12. If this is the right place... I'm signing, too. Please send my disc to mikeweil... we meet (I hope !!! ) often! with regards Mr. Bassman
  13. Okay.... shit happens this time.... I am very sorry, but I was too late.... I had to much "um die Ohren"... Is there a good translation for this ? A last word to Track 8.... We were quite sure, that we (my guitar-playing friend) knew this guy.... not Scofield, but knowing him well.... that was the clue... We saw Linka with Abercrombie some time ago .... and... Linka knows Scofield indeed.... they play together on other record(s) and Linka had some lessons (if i remember this correct ... i had to check liner notes....). The CD was fun to listen too... but i hadn't the peace to listen and write down my notes, I'm very sorry for this time and I want to say thanks to Tjobbe for that nice compilation!! with the best wishes Mr. Bassman
  14. Well, that would be fine, but you must not do it, because we can copy my exemplar. I'm often at Mikeweils place... we play together in a band, the band-practice-place is at his home and... we have very nice audition-times, kind-of-a-reallife-bft , but, most of the time, he is the master and I am the pupil , but fun, I can tell you. Well, i should say: Do, as you like, but you should know, that it is no problem for us to make a copy for me. Is this okay ? regards Mr. Bassman
  15. Okay, No. 30 took me back to this fun... I'm in, but.... i don't need a seperate copy, because of mikeweil... we meet from time to time , i hope more often in the future... summer break was very long in these times with regards Mr. Bassman
  16. Okay, got my copy from mikeweil some days ago.... and... i'm back in this business after a longer break.... but this CD was real fun ! Fun, listenning to the music, not that funny, as i try to start the good ol' guess-who-'n-which-tune-is-this-game... just kidding.... My tries: 1: Nice start... but i don't have any idea. This tune makes me to get happy, when listening, a warm and happy sound indeed. It must be a nice sunny sunday, when they recorded that tune. 2: This tune is familiar.... Indian summer ! For me another nice and warm performance, not as an easy listening... it IS nice and warm 3: I'm beginning to see the light, indeed. But who ?? Okay, i think, if i check the other posts after this, i maybe know it... The musicians play very "exact" to the point, a bit to exact for me, but not bad. A very roomy athmosphere, not that favourite to me, but a nice "trumpet-battle" near the end of that tune. And no guess, who they are... 4: Oh, what was that? Flute or even piccolo with trombone and a nice bass-player indeed. I should know him .... That piano-player sounds familiar, too... hmmm. ... and so is the guitar.... errh.... äääähm .... I'm out of training in these things.... 5: Oh, that is an interesting tune! Bass and drums with piano are very hot cooking. The drummer could be Elvin Jones in earlier days ? And Paul Chambers as a guess for the bass-player? I don't know this one... since this day 6: Again... no idea, a nice group... they have a good drive, but i have no idea ... 7: My solitude, i think. But i don't recognize that piano-player. But he or she had a funny day on the recording date... a pling here... a pling there and funny ideas... not that bad.... 8: Aaaargh, i know this tune... fine sax, nice bass-playing... this bass-player has "flummy-fingers" , i think i must know him. A nice tune ... but "ashes on my head" for the "no-Idea".... 9: Really no Idea, sounds more modern, maybe the piano is a bit out of tune ??? 10: up-tempo-piece... the bass-Player must have a dragon-skin on his right hand But i don't know the musicians... better .. i may know them but not now... 11: Ahhh, i got one... This disc is just 5 feet away on the cupboard and i listened this one a couple of days ago.... Great fun ! Limbo at its best and two giants together, Duke and Coleman Hawkins. My "lucky tune-gues" in this BFT ??? 12: Ahm... the changes are familiar, but... i don' t recognize this in these times. This sax-solo is very exciting and a solid bass-playing... nice one. 13: Oh-Oh! Clarinet... not my favourite... this very clean tone and oldstyle-lines... i gues it can be Benny Goodman ? But what a sound!!! That reminds me to something funny... as i do a littel musc-recording and sound-processing... it reminds me to something... when i tested the features of an sound-processing-programm with those funny 3D-Reverb-room-modelling-effects... i know, how i can get very close to this sound . At least, it must be a very large concert hall and the microphones are a little missplaced i guess. The microphone or whatever placed near the bass is "missplaced" and the bass-player may be a little bit dancing or turning the bass a little... and... the tone fades. There may be some extra micros in the hall.... 50 metres away from the musicians. Very funny sound! And the audience.... kind of artificial ??? 14: How high the moon, yeah! But those musicians ??? Vibes ... Red Norvo ? 15: This is Eroll Garner, no way, but i don't know the tune/recording. I have not very much CDs/record from Eroll Garner.... but now i've got a new one, thanks to Catesta! 16: Okay, now the trumpets are in! But no idea, who is playing there.... i will soon read the other postings and learn something about that! Nice tune for the end of a nice BFT!!! This was really fun, and the compilation is very fine... Thanks to Catesta ! with bassy regards Mr. Bassman
  17. Aaah ! That is good news, otherwise i would have called you in the morning. My guesses are really quickshots, i could only listen twice to CD 2, you might know why... , but now Mikails Examination-Lesson-Text is finished too and he did some recordings in the afternoon here, ..... for practice.... german folksongs. Back to the guessings... Aki Takase was indeed a shoot into the blue sky... but i rolled a dice..... 1-3 was Herbie..... 4-6 was Aki ... i rolled a 5..... i should give the dice a kick in the *** ! BTW... i was lucky with my posting... just 5 min in front of Toms answer-thread!!! But the live bootleg must be in your pile ??? CYA soon !
  18. Just shortly in front of the deadline .... Disc 2 is "not easy" I can only guess and remark some "perhaps"-ideas Eins: The tune is familiar to me, but no clear idea at all... Well, the bassplayer sounds a bit like Mingus, that would be my guess. The other musicians ??? Not the slightest idea. Zwei: The tune ist the "beloved" St.Thomas (i don't like it to play, but i listen with great pleasure to a good version of that tune! I guess it should be the maestro himself ??? Sonny Rollins ? Hmmm. the bass-Player ??? ... Ashes on my head ! No idea at all Drei: This is straight, no chaser. The bass, maybe an electric upright ? Or indeed a bass-guitar ? Hmmm, not shure about that, sounds a bit odd. Guitar is not Wes Vier: Aaaahhh, these drums... i'm sure i have to know this one.... Not only the drummer, but the tune itself.... at the end there is a bit of Naima, right ? But no idea to the other musicians, bass-player is not recognable for me, sorry (... just another ashes on my head...). Saxophone sounds "familiar", but ... again ashes !!! Fünf: Happy bithday to you ???? on the cymbals ??? Piano player.... Aki Takase ??? Just a guess, and no idea about the others. Sechs: No idea about this tune, trumpet ... at first i thought Freddie Hubbard... but no..... , the bass player sounds indeed familiar.... hmmm just another ashes.... Puh, it is done, but not very brilliant, i think.... now i will read the other notes in here... But thanks to Tom! Very interesting and fun, indeed! And a lot of ashes on my head
  19. My first try..... 1. My favourite things Nice piano-work, it reminds me to Bugge Wesseltoft or Esbjörn Svenson... but only a guess. 2. No chance, better no idea 3. Beatles tune "Can´t buy me love", although nice work, but no idea who they are. 4. The drummer.... hmmm.. Elvin Jones ? or three thumbs down ! 5. It might as well be spring, but not Bill Evans ... no idea...., but the trombone seams for me a bit too heavy for the song, IMHO. 6. Äh... ehm .... i give up 7. Killing me softly, but who "kills" whom in this version ? Just kidding, no idea, who they are. 8. look No. 6...., sorry. 9. Sorry, again a No. 6 .... 10. I have another No. 6 in here... but a very expressive Duo, i like this kind of playing together, but no idea, who it could be or the tune.... 11. You got another "white spot" for me here, I think i had to know some of the musicians... damn.... I need another mikeweil-evening-listen-lesson ! 12. All the things you are, ... Saxophones ... no idea, but what a nice bass-playing... but, who is this ? The sound of the bass is very pleasant for me. I think, they had a lot of fun, when recording this tune. .... the end ist really funny B-) 13. Again a No.6 for me, shame on me, but the tune sounds familiar... can someone read it from my tongue ??? Puh... That was hard work but FUN at all !!!! And never ending white spots in my Atlas of Jazz Thanks to Tom... and No.2 will follow in the next days Mr. Bassman
  20. Just being shanghaied by mikeweil to this community.... he got the BFT17 CD´s twice.... i want to sing-up here in the discussion... and a big Hello to you all. Mr. Bassman
