I thought the vinylphiles here would enjoy this one given Sony's recent fiasco. Taken from Spencer Katt's weekly column on eweek.com.(http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1888922,00.asp)

Ditto the VPI & Record Research Lab combo. I'm tempted to try the Disc Doctor brushes as well, although it looks like Music Direct has some "knock offs" available. Check this out... not for the faint of heart: http://www.musicangle.com/feat.php?id=54

Shouldn't the removed /deleted titles remain available for customers who have already purchased the downloads and may need to re-download? Or are they screwed like everyone else? Moreso since they've already bought them.

Nice one! I've been revisiting Mr. Lowe lately myself. I wish his recent albums, especially Dig My Mood, were available on vinyl...

I think I heard this right during the commute this morning... The Cars are reforming and going on a reunion tour... except only half of the original members are participating, the two original driving members will not be participating: Ric Ocasek (too busy spending time with Paulina whatshername... and who can blame him) and Ben Orr (died of cancer) are out. Instead, the two "other guys" and Mr. Rundgren will be reforming as The Cars... how wierd is that? It's one thing for Mick and Keefe and Roger and Pete to "reunite" their bands, but I don't get how TR can reunite a band he wasn't a member of in the first place...

I got a nice surprise from Border's last week via my Borders Rewards membership. Looks like I have $35 in play money to spend by mid-January. Not sure how though, as I don't buy much music their normally... might be from my wife's purchases on educator days. It's good for any merchandise and doesn't exclude coupons, so I should be able to stretch it out across at least three CD's or a lower end box set. I still prefer the Barnes & Noble rewards program even with the $25 annual fee (Borders is free) since I know I can more than recover the cost of the membership and I save all the time, not just coupon days, member shopping days, or even now with the free money.

Is the Randy Weston - Little Niles two-fer considered part of a different series? My copy is in a brown paper cover with 1976 date printed on the cover... BN-LA 598.

At $2.50 a slice, why not take a flyer on it? I picked up the Andrew Hill and Cecil Tayler paper bag 2-fers earlier this month at the local record conv. The Hill includes three never before release sessions. Anyone know what the eventual releases were titled? Side 1 is OK, the tracks with string quartet on side 2 are interesting, but I really dig sides 3 & 4 with Hill, Henderson, Hubbard, Davis and Chambers. The Taylor 2-fer includes his Transition sessions (all of them???), a UA release, and one unreleased track... all of it highly enjoyable.

Playing catch up... Ryan Adams - Jacksonville City Nights -- A nicely done 2LP gatefold release with a side of vinyl only tracks including Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash covers. Great stuff. Johnny Griffin - Live in Tokyo -- Another 2LP gatefold on Inner City with Horace Parlan, Art Taylor and a guy named Mads Vinding on bass. Aside from a short JJ Johnson tune on Side 2, it's one track per side making for some nice, long blowin' by Griffin and Parlan in particular. Joe Puma - Wild Kitten -- Dawn reissue on Sundazed Euphoria Jazz imprint. Entertaining, if not a bit disconcerting given the prominence given to the accordian... have to get used to that I guess. Sonny Rollins - Alternate Takes -- Mid 80's issue of three unreleased tracks each from Way Out West and The Contemporary Leaders. Given how much I enjoy both of the original albums, I'm not sure these are essential... nice to have though. Jimmy Smith - The Sermon! -- Mono, deep groove, West 63rd St. Culled from the dollar bins at this month's record convention! Jimmy Smith - Prayer Meetin' -- Stereo, NY USA from the same $1 bin. Dave Brubeck - Brubeck Desmond -- Fantasy deep groove red vinyl. Yet another from the two old ladies selling their hubbies' LP's in the corner for $1 each. The trusty DJ bag was overflowing from that booth alone! Need to revisit the two Ornette Coleman Stockholm BN dates on the big rig... they're all I listened to on the iPod during this week's trip to ATL.

Has anyone else noticed these on True Blue's site? Aside from a two line description, they don't give much information on these: "A small quantity of a custom pressing of 150-gram LPs in sturdy jackets from the Fantasy family of labels has been made available to us. Supplies are very limited." None of the titles appear to overlap with Analogue Productions's releases although the Joe Henderson title does have an OJC logo. I thought they might be German OJC's based on the "OJC's on sale in Europe" thread, but I don't recall them having particularly "sturdy" jackets. Any experience with these? The titles seem fairly obscure.

Interesting... parallel travels along the BN trip on my end with stops along the Blue Label reissue highway. I'll still pick up a Blue Label or even DMM if cheap if I don't have the title already. I'm *trying* to take the high road and go for better pressings or reissues instead of an armload of "inferior" pressings. It's tough to ignore all of that music in the name of better pressings though. Check out Robert May's labelography for his opinions on the sound of different pressings / label variations as well. Interesting reading. I happen to like the Classic Reissues, particularly given the choice between Mono and Stereo releases... uh oh, another BN turf war... Don't be afraid to take a flyer on beat up older pressings. As Sidewinder says, given a decent TT & cartridge, those surface marks may not be as bad as you think. Good luck.

Throw in obsessive compulsive tendencies and you're really in trouble!

DG had the Spanish version of Let Me Tell You 'Bout It last week for $6 or $7. Euclid has Rollin' With Leo on Jap. CD for $20 as well. Check out The Baritone Great on Chess... mostly cuts by Parker along with a few with Sahib Shihab on bari. Fun stuff. Not sure if that's on CD though.

Music to watch paint dry... definitely makes the time fly by! Jimmy Heath - The Thumper Jimmy Heath - Really Big! Unfortuneately, they both have the OJC logo :-)
-
Just an FYI... Despite the text on the LP jacket, the LP is an all analog production. The CD artwork was mistakenly used for both releases.

Coltrane Reviews in STL PD
spinlps replied to spinlps's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I just wish that the PD would... a - give him more space and publish him more frequently and b - at least make it easier to find his articles and reviews on the stltoday.com site. -
Anyone have a complete list of the 10" twofer CD's? I have a few of these from the McGhee / Drew / Farlow series... was that it or were there subsequent series? Looking for the Foster / Wallington & the Watkins now. Love the Melle as well. Thanks, T

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not too worried about "being covered" as I am about doing the "right thing"... as difficult as that may be when record companies are involved. I've kept some duplicate CD's I've ripped b/c they had extra tracks that I didn't have in other formats. As far as artist compensation, I agree it blows. Does Tina Brooks, Ben Webster, or any other deceased player really benefit from the myriad reissue programs these days? I doubt it. I haven't donated to PRS although I try to buy new releases and even some downloads directly from the artists when possible. Still, this usually applies to alt / pop / rock and not to Jazz musicians who, for the most part, haven't embraced direct distribution... present company excluded of course. In general, I thought it would be interesting to see what members thought about the cross format taping / ripping that goes on. With that, I'll get this list ready and post in the next few days. Thanks again, T

Not sure if this belongs here or in another fora... Misc Music perhaps? Jim, please move to a more appropriate forum if you think this is the wrong place. I thought I'd ask the board about the ethical / moral / legal dilema of owning albums in multiple formats, taping or ripping one of the formats, and then selling or gifting the taped / ripped format. The CD's I've sold usually fall into two categories: 1 - Owned CD, Ripped CD, Found & Bought Vinyl, Sold / Traded CD 2 - Didn't like CD In the cases I already owned the vinyl, cassette, Reel to Reel, I would digitize the media on hand for iPod, car, office, etc... I didn't think much of this until kiddo #2 came along and vinyl recording time went by the wayside. Recently, if I found a cheap / used CD of an LP I already owned, I've purchased it, ripped it, and traded or sold it back. I'd like to think I'll go back and record the vinyl later, but somehow I don't think I'll be able to recover vinyl recording time for a while. I don't think this is an issue if the music has been part of the same "run." Example: I have the Conn True Blue LP, ripped the Conn True Blue CD. BUT, how does it work when they aren't from the same run... say I own an Original, Japanese or even a Classic Pressing of Cool Struttin' but I've burned the RVG. Or, in one case, I had a Mosaic box on LP and ripped a friends parallel Columbia CD Box Set for the iPod. Am I buying a license to listen / record for personal use a piece of music, in which case I *think* I'm OK, OR am I buying a license for a particular mastering of that piece of music, in which case I think I need to keep all copies. I was going to post a more complete list of CD's which meet this criteria, but thought I'd ask around for opinions. Obviously, the mere fact that I'm asking leads me to believe that what I'm doing might be questionable given specific combinations of formats and recordings. Similarly, I don't think there's an issue when downloading the music from eMusic since technically I'm purchasing and keeping both formatsl... and I'm not sure I could sell emusic downloads anyway! Thoughts on this one? What do the members in the biz think about this? Aside from ethics or personal morals, is there a legal issue here when owning / recording across formats? What do you do? Thanks! T

Brownie, how does KD stack up on this one? I'm a big Drew fan but don't have this one. I take it this is filed under Sims? Thanks!

Spun some LT's tonight... Stanley Turrentine - New Time Shuffle Stanley Turrentine - In Memory Of Lee Morgan - Taru 2 out of 3 ain't bad... New Time Shuffle didn't do it for me; a large ensemble that leaned too much to pop-jazz for my liking. Really enjoyed In Memory of though. Another title that waited years for release, Blue Mitchell, Curtis Fuller, and a young Herbie Hancock keep things moving.

Ditto here. I got my vinyl fix through RT after my son was born in '01. I swear I had a package arriving every week for the first 2 - 3 months... nothing like 3am orders that only vaguely registered when the package arrived! I was a solid customer until last fall when orders started taking longer to fill and a couple of family members got the run around when following up on Xmas gifts they ordered for me. Still, I hope they reorg and return in the near future. They had some great regular sales and the pre-order pricing rocks.
