  1. Just picked these Speaker's Corner Verve Reissues: Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, & Teddy Wilson - Selections from The Benny Goodman Movie Coleman Hawkins - Coleman Hawkins and Confreres Don't have originals for comparison, but these are both very, very well done.
  2. Looks like Borders is really pushing the Rewards program. Next round of couponds will be 25% for members, 10% for non-members.
  3. 3 out of 4 of the Jazz In Paris boxes... only missing the Montmarte box while in Phoenix. Red Garland - At The Prelude with the 30% Borders coupon.
  4. Here's the actual Borders Rewards coupon... http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/coupon30.htm I think non-members have used these in the past.
  5. Ok. I snagged two copies... couldn't get to the third before the row filled up. :-) PM or email your address and I'll send them out.
  6. Didn't see anyone mention this yet this month... I'm flipping through Spirit, SW's inflight magazine, on my flight to Phoenix today and lo and behold the band is mentioned in one of the features. Here's the excerpt. Jim, let me know if you or the other guys want a copy and I'll snag one on the flight home. Excerpted from "Motown's Sound" by Elvis Mitchell, Flight magazine, February 2006 issue. Mitchell writes about going to Baker's Keyboard Lounge with a friend... With its low ceiling and mostly unobstructed sight lines, Baker's is like a fossilized lounge, destined to combat the boredom of the present with weapons from the past: sweet unadulterated jazz. That night its performed by a Lansing-based trio called organissimo, which swings through its jammed sets with its keyboardist blasting through a meticulously chosen set of originals and new songs. The group's toned, muscular playing keeps the crowd rapt, a condition noticeable by the fact that almost no one is talking. This is the biggest test at Baker's. Because if the act playing isn't hush-worthy, Baker's brick-house acoustic will ensure a crushing din of food and drink orders - or, just as often, loud complaints about the Tigers' or Lions' pitiable season.
  7. I typed the wrong dates for the 30% coupons... should read 2/23 - 2/26.
  8. Picked up some well priced, OOP titles I've been trying to hunt down on the cheap. $70 for the lot. Not bad considering all but the Getz was sealed. OOP Billy Bauer - Plectrist (Verve Elite) Bud Shank / Bill Perkins (West Coast Classics Series) Verve 2-Fers Cannonball Adderley - Sophisticated Swing: The EmArcy Small-Group Sessions (Verve 2CD) Ben Webster - Music For Loving (Verve 2CD Stan Getz - Stan Getz At The Shrine Ahmad Jamal - The Legendary Okeh & Epic Recordings
  9. I thought several school districts were going to or already have implemented RFID badges to track student movement / attendance on school grounds. Several privacy groups chimed in, but I can't remember the details or final outcome.
  10. Border's is issuing 30% off (Book, CD, DVD, etc...) receipt coupons good from 2/23 - 2/26. If history is any indicator then look for e-coupons early next week.
  11. I all really depends on how you're going to use the iPod (or any MP3 player for that matter). If you want a unit for the gym, running, biking, etc... then go for the Nano. It's a flash player, so no moving parts and (in theory) no skips. The Shuffle is also a flash player, but I'd still opt for the Nano just to get a screen. If you want to use the iPod as primary source on your hifi or absolutely must have all (most) of your music with you all of the time, then go for the largest unit you can afford. If you want to just take a portable player on the road or to the gym in lieu of a stack of CD's + player, then a smaller (size and capacity) unit may be the better option. I have a 4 year old 10GB player and 50+ GB of music. Most of that is my CD collection... I bet I haven't transferred even 5% of my LP's. So my music collection is going to be larger than iPod capacities for some time. At 192k VBR rip rates, I usually have between 1200 - 1300 songs with me at any given time. On average, using the iPod during the commute and in the office (10 hours playing time) I'll usually get through 120 - 150 songs per day. That number is lower when I'm traveling. I received a free Shuffle over the holidays which I plan on taking on my next trip to see if its an acceptable option. As tempting as the new 60GB units are (and they really are), I don't see any reason to upgrade until the one I've got shoots craps. Even then, I'm leaning towards the Nano. One last factor that shouldn't be overlooked: How much time you want to spend "managing" the songs on your iPod. If you want a set it and forget it player, thae get the largest you can afford. As long as your music collection doesn't exceed the iPod's capacity whatever you rip will transfer to the iPod automatically. If you opt for a Nano or smaller capacity iPod or your collection exceeds the iPod's capacity, then you'll need to manage what songs are transfered manually or through playlists (smart or regulary). Good luck. And let us know what you get!
  12. Zoot Sims - Quartets (OJC) Prestige Blues Swingers - Outskirts of Town (OJC)
  13. Amazon sellers have it used for $75 and new for $80.
  14. Whoops... did I forget to mention that? The website sez it's on LP. Drat!
  15. Tangentially related, but I'd love to see them revive the West Coast Classics series. I missed the first go 'round and have been playing catch up recently. Some great stuff out there that doesn't seem readily available on CD.
  16. Seconded. I picked this cassette up in a Big Lots cutout bin some years back. Great, great stuff. Survived two car decks and working on the third.
  17. Yee-Hah... both items in stock and on their way! Big Al, I was in Euclid over lunch today and they had Nothing But The Blues on Japanese reissue. It was either $9.99 or $19.99... can't remember.
  18. Amazon has the BIG box set for $550 with free shipping. At 75 CD's, that's $7.30 per disc ppd. They also have the three smaller boxes at $30 each ppd from Amazon; slightly cheaper prices on the marketplace. The Tower in Atlanta had all three boxes in December stickered at $25... no idea if they're still available.
  19. Found a copy listed on GEMM last night which, according to the listing, was added two weeks ago so there's a good chance it's still around (hopefully). I hate that about GEMM... I ordered it, but it still shows up on the site and can still be placed in someone else's shopping cart. I don't normally order stuff on GEMM, but I snooped around and the seller is a "real" B & M shop and has 2000+ positive feedbacks on ebay... $14 sealed. Picked up the James Clay / Fathead Newman OJC on vinyl as well as the OCD voices don't allow me to buy "just one." We'll see if either are actually available... re: the iTunes listing: At least it's not listed as a Verve Vault title... so maybe there's hope for a repress?
  20. The $30 Japanese import isn't good enough? I was looking for this after hearing the recent Ellis in Wonderland release. Found a sealed copy for $14 on Amazon or Half (can't remember) but someone beat me to it.
  21. So where does he sit in the Jarrett/Garner --- Kenny Dorham spectrum?
  22. Illinois Jacquet - Bosses Of The Ballad Illinois Jacquet - Jazz Party Illinois Jacquet - Bottoms Up Variety of pressings, nothing too interesting aside from the Groove Note Reissue of Jazz Party.
  23. Sweet. Thanks for posting this. Yet another distraction at work. Too bad there aren't any scanned pics, advertisments, etc...
  24. Picked up the Ellis, Raney and Roberts Verve Originals today, expecting a DG order to arrive tomorrow, and may (finally) use the True Blue GC tonight...
