ajf67 Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 "Giants of Boogie Woogie" on Riverside. Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Meade Lux Lewis. This one is an old white label deep groove and it sounds great. A few pops but nothing that matters to me. Quote

jeffcrom Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 Sunny Murray - An Even Break (BYG) Byard Lancaster is so soulful. Marion Brown - Three for Shepp (Impulse) I was planning on listening to this even before DaveS's post. This is such a beautiful album. Stanley Cowell's stride piano on "Spooks" is just amazing. Quote

Right now I'm listening to "Red Allen Meets Kid Ory" on a mono Verve. Before that was "Swing Session With Edmond Hall" on Commodore. Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 (edited) Michel Legrand plays Richard Rodgers - Philips (black label, mono). From 1962, this is an overlooked gem that has not been reissued on CD AFAIK. A big band lineup augmented with woodwinds, french horns, and additional percussion. Brilliant writing, lots of jazz content and that touch of Kennedy-era space age sparkle. Right up there with Legrand Jazz, IMHO. Then: Michel Legrand - Les Desmoiselles De Rochefort, Instrumental Version - UA (pink and orange stereo) Michel Legrand - The Happy Ending - UA (pink and orange, stereo) John Barry - On Her Majesty's Secret Service - UA (pink and orange, stereo). brownie Posted July 31, 2010 Report Posted July 31, 2010 Woody Herman 'Early Autumn' (Verve, mono, blue label) an assemblage of sides recorded for the Mars label. Woody Herman sings on most tunes including the title one! Great band with - among others - Don Fagerquist, Carl Fontana and the great tenor sax section of Arno Marsh, Dick Hafer, Bill Perkins... Unfortunately, I can't claim to have bought it for 22/6! I got it used at Vinyl Exchange, Manchester for £4 just a few years ago. But I am the proud possessor of 5 Realm vols of the Parker Savoys, which I bought when they came out at low price in 1963. Prior to that, at the age of 18 in 1958, I could only run to one vol of Parker Savoy on London American. Not a bad deal actually, as each vol gave a reasonable sampling of the Savoy output and you had to buy further vols largely to get alternative takes. A friend had one other vol and we collaborated on our bebop education! Quote
