One of the more exciting LPs I've listened to recently:

7d62_35.JPG

Noah Howard: PATTERNS. On AltSax Records. Reportedlyhard to get (and/or expensive) on vinyl (I scored a copy in NYC at a somewhat reasonable price), but out on CD (if you must). With Misha Mengelberg (misidentified on the LP as "Mendelberg") and Han Bennink. Misha gets some good licks in, but it is Bennink who excites, as he unleashes a furious assault on the drumkit, while Noah wails aways in best "fire music" style.

Yeah, an interesting side. Jaap Schoonhoven brings it.

Yes, good point about Jaap. In retrospect, this album is failry important from a number of perspectives, particularly the development of European free jazz, the Dutch jazz scene, and American-European collaboration.

Too bad Noah's recent stuff does not come close; mostly in a fusion, smooth jazz mode. But the early stuff is killer.

Tonight I listened to Sgt Pepper. This may be the last Beatles record I ever listen to deliberately.

I followed up with "Bert and John" by Bert Jansch and John Renbourn. I quite liked this, but I prefer Davy Graham.

T-Bone Walker Mosaic Box Set

I really must give your 'ex' CD version of the set a spin !

Definitely, though a CD spin isn't quite a Lp spin...

Horace Silver 'Song For My Father' (Music Matters 2x45rpm, stereo). Just arrived ! :)

How about that? Did you compare it with mono original?

Floats my boat though :)

I'll see if I can compare with the mono original this weekend. I like the way the drum dynamics are captured on the Music Matters.

Dexter Gordon 'Dexter Blows Hot and Cool' (DooTone)

Cover and labels look like the original thing but this is a reprint!

I have the same copy, the Counce and Perkins too. Rather poor pressings.

The pressing on my copy (an 'Authentic Records' release) is fine. I just hear too much boom coming from Leroy Vinnegar's bass!

Yeah, it sounds especially nice on the German pressing - I had the US pressing for years, which didn't sound nearly as nice. Beautiful music, naturally.

I love Marion Brown. I was listening to this recently. Uncategorizable, deeply imagined, and totally cool:

brown_sweet.jpgDiscogs says there was a Japanese CD issue, but I've never seen it. It really should be reissued. In fact, maybe someone could do a Marion Brown box set (Mosaic? )
